We recently booked a private van tour of Malta. We knew we would have seniors with us, and that’s why we booked a tour where we could have flexibility and control of the itinerary.
When we arrived to the time and place we’d set for meeting, the tour van was nowhere to be found. We had to call and coordinate with the central office, and started the tour late.
First stop: We stopped in the market for a few minutes, enjoyable but unremarkable.
Second stop: We then proceeded to the Blue Grotto. The view is indeed spectacular. We couldn’t go down to a boat because of seniors mobility issues (88, 85, 84 and 81).
The next stop was Mdina. We asked if there would be a place for the seniors to wait, like a restaurant, while we walked in Mdina. Our tour guide said there would be a bench in the sun, that there were no restrooms or restaurants in Mdina. She said that the only available bathroom would be the one in the outlook for the blue grotto. So, without another option, the seniors went down a ramp to go to the bathroom and had extreme difficulty coming back up.
We asked if they could stay in the van while we walked around for an hour in Mdina. She said she couldn’t leave the AC on while they were inside because: “running AC would be a waste of diesel”. We asked if she could take them back to the port and then be back to pick us up in 1h, since the round trip drive would only be 50 minutes. She said she couldn’t do it. We decided to go anyway.
We got to Mdina, and surprise! There was plenty of shade, plenty of restaurants and plenty of benches in the shade.
Our tour guide was completely unknowledgeable. The answers to our questions were met with one sentence answers. She didn’t know any facts, history, or stories about Malta. She did mention the runway of the airport was above us in a tunnel. When we got to the blue grotto she said, and I’m not exaggerating: “when you board the boat, there will be a view of the sea”. When I asked about the history of Malta, silence. Then, after we got we back from the market, she read basic facts from Wikipedia out loud. Throughout the whole tour, the guide was constantly on the phone while driving.
The only good thing I can say is that she drove and didn’t crash.

I would, however, like to clarify a few points for future readers.
The tour started later than planned due to difficulties locating the meeting point at the cruise terminal, and we remained committed to completing the agreed itinerary within the booked time.
Regarding Blue Grotto, the decision not to take the boat ride was based on the mobility limitations within your group. Access to the boats involves several steps and can be challenging for elderly guests. Safety is always my priority.
With respect to Mdina, there are indeed restaurants, cafés, benches and public facilities available. I regret if there were any misunderstanding regarding the options that could accommodate members of your party with reduced mobility. As a driver, I also have operational limitations and cannot leave some guests unattended in the vehicle with the engine and air conditioning running for an extended period, nor can I split the service by returning to the port and then coming back while the rest of the group remains in Mdina.
I always do my best to adapt tours to the needs of each family and group. However, private tours still operate within the booked duration, logistical constraints and safety considerations.
I genuinely regret that your experience did not reflect the level of service I strive to provide and wish you all the best in your future travels.

The driver is not a tour guide. He did not know the specific history of Malta and was not able to take us for walking tours

This will be a duel review. The beginning was a one star experience. The driver showed up and we got in his car. Then he told us that the AC in his car was not working. He told us we could stay with him or transfer to another driver. Since it was going to be a hot day we said we would take the next driver, 15 minutes later the new driver showed up. Then new driver was Kevin and he was fabulous. I would give Kevin 5 stars. He drove us where we wanted to go and took us places we didn’t even know about. We would book Kevin again if we return to Malta.
One other note, the drivers use their personal vehicles so there isn’t any water or Wi-Fi. Viator needs to be more careful in their descriptions to ensure that everything they say will be there is actually there.

Carmel was wonderful.
Our trip was booked for the incorrect date but the tour guide made adjustments to accommodate our schedule. Carmel our driver took us all around and provided great information as we traveled. He was ver pleasant and courteous.
Viator phone rep was very good.
The chat representative was not helpful at all.

It was the perfect experience in Malta. Very easy pick up at the port. Simon was very kind and patient with a family member who walks slowly. He bought us Maltese treats to try. We had an amazing time.

Jonathan was our guide. He made it easy for us to see what we wanted. He knew the best way to arrange the time we had. Very friendly. Extremely knowledgeable. Comfortable van. We learned a lot! The boat ride at the Blue Groto was our first highlight but not our last one. We rated this tour an A+.

We could not have had a nicer experience around Malta than being driven around by Simon. He took a us to experience the blue grotto, to have local sweets and pastries, to the original capital of Malta. Perfect English, warm personality. A wonderful ambassador for his country. Isaac and Sylvan mage the tour personalised, special and interesting g taking in the blue grotto Hagar Qim, Dihgli cliffs and the Catacombs. They allowed us time at each location to explore at our own pace. Unfortunately due to a massive thunderstorm we had to curtail the tour. Prior to the tour we were kept informed of timings where to meet and on the day Phone calls to ensure we knew wheee to meet and what vehicle led was collected ring us. Great service e thank you.

Wow! Our guide John was amazing. His knowledge of Malta astounded us. He was both knowledgeable and passionate about the country. He was very helpful and thoughtful, a true gentleman. We really enjoyed the tour and the time spent with John. He made sure we seen everything that we wanted to see. At the Basilica he walked us in to a separate counter to avoid the line. John was always waiting for us when and where he said he would be when at an attraction that he did not go in, such as the Blue Grotto and a few others. We never felt rushed and really got to enjoy all we seen. John’s knowledge and personality really made this tour special. We highly recommend this tour.

Our first visit to Malta via cruise ship and we wanted an overview of the major attractions. This tour on Viatour seemed to fit the bill and it certainly delivered. Jonathan, our driver did an excellent job providing us with a great introduction to Malta. Our first stop was a boat tour in the Blue Grotto. This is a must do experience, beautiful! Next stop the Dingli Cliffs, highest spot on Malta. Then on to Mdina, the oldest city in Malta and finally views of Valleta. Jonathan provided excellent historical commentary as well as current information on Malta. Jonathan provided little
treats, water and a small gift. We were very pleased with his service and the value of this private excursion.

We really enjoyed this tour. The highlights were our visits to the Blue Grotto and Malta's old capital city, Mdina.
The only negative was that our guide was not properly equipped to deliver his knowledgeable talks while he was driving us from place to place. Only the people sitting close to the front of the van could hear him. As a result, many people in the back of the van started conversations that distracted from our tour. Suggest that the tour company use a speaker system inside the van.

George was our driver and timing was perfect. Communication before, during and after was excellent. George took us to the blue grotto where we did the boat ride, dingli cliffs, Madina, and a domed church. Received a honey cookie and a Maltese fridge magnet souvenir. Couple small things, it lists wifi in the van and we were to receive water. Van had no wifi and we did not get water. That said we did receive an apologie from the company afterwards saying it was an oversight. Would definitely book this tour.

We had a great tour with Jonathan. He took us to some beautiful sites around Malta. He dropped us off to take a boat ride around blue grotto and tried some local snacks as well.

We saw lots of places which was nice. Blue Grotto and Mdina. Blue Grotto boat ride is a must do. Was not impressed with transportation. Van was old and ac didn't work great towards end of day. Our tour guide was also about 15 minutes late and had us come find him vs coming to us where most others were picked up. Driver also got lost multiple times and had to do lots of turn arounds. Would have hoped he knew the island better for the amount we paid for the tour.

Even though our driver spoke English, he was not so easy to understand. The back seat had speakers above sows could hear better but the back seat was very hot the way the vents were placed.

Thanks for.letting us know, the van was big for 19persons as you were a party of 8persons there was plenty of seats left to change to be closer to the driver to listen better ,regarding the vents could be easily to regulated them for a better position, unfortunately last week tempretures raised up and everyone felt it even us locals as we are use to it, even new buses there aircondition wasn't the best as distance between each stop its not that far, it won't reduce in 15minutes drive unfortunately, especially from the parkig of blue grotto going to dingli clifts it was so busy alot of viechels and coaches, the heat of all the engines makes it worst, I assume after the aircondition was better

John was the best driver we could have asked for. We traveled to Malta for one day on a cruise and he picked us up right at the terminal. He allowed for a flexible schedule and had suggestions as well, which was great! He gave a great amount of historical facts along the way. He was a great driver and we always felt safe. Would definitely recommend him to anyone we know and will be contacting him for our next trip!

It was an excellent tour! Simon was very hospitable and such a gracious host and showed us the highlights and more plus introduced to Maltese snacks peas in phyllo pastry and dates cookies ! He was very flexible too as our kids decided to swim at blue grotto. I highly recommend this tour! And Simon!
