    Free the Fireflies!

    As advertised-cookery class including informative walk around garden. Eye opening visit to local family, where we were welcomed into their private space. Firefly experience (the main advertising focus) was disappointing! Mainly due to the status of firefly habitats (basically human are destroying these ). There weren’t many to see (images therefore misleading) and we weren’t happy that the few there were had been caught in plastic bottles with sealed caps, so we could see them! We would prefer to see the few there are, flying free. We did learn about their lifecycles and given how long it takes to reach their maturity (2 years before they glow) and how long they have to mate in this state (3 weeks). They should be left as they are and we should happy to see them free.

We’re happy you enjoyed the cooking activity, garden walk, and the visit to a local Balinese family. Regarding the fireflies, we completely understand your concern. Sadly, firefly habitats in Bali are decreasing due to development and environmental changes — this is exactly why we created this experience: to raise awareness and encourage protection of their habitat. About the bottles, we would like to clarify that the fireflies are only gently caught for a very short time for educational purposes, and we always release them back into the same area. They are never kept or taken away. Through this tour, we also support the local community in maintaining the environment so fireflies can still survive and reproduce, even in the middle of rapid development in Bali.     Interesting way to see local life and learn about some Indonesian food. Visiting the rice field to see the fireflies was icing on the cake.

    This was special. The farm is amazing. The insight into rural Bali life is lovely to see and the cooking went so smoothly due to the hard work of the organisers and the setting we ate at was enchanting, made even more so by the fireflies.
