We were a bit hesitant doing a day trip from one foreign country to another foreign country but I’m glad we did. Everything felt safe and easy. Our English-speaking guide was excellent and Jordanian immigration control had no delays other than the volume of people.
Itinerary starts past midnight on a bus to the coast (about 4 hours drive). Then an hour on the ferry (not enough seats for everyone) to Jordan. Once through immigration control we were split into groups based on language and then driven to Petra. We stopped off for a toilet break and some mountains which are believed to hold the resting place of Prophet Harun (Peace Upon Him) which can be seen in the distance.
Arrived in Petra for lunch (which was excellent) and then went to the main part of the trip to the Treasury. From the start of the Trek to the treasury is around hours walk and the guide will talk through the sites along the way. The Treasury is as breathtaking as you can imagine. One of our intentions was to have reference to the people of Thamud as the Treasury is one of a series of buildings in Petra that was built by the Nabateans who followed a pagan religion and were closely linked to the people of Thamud. They were renowned for their elaborate skill of carving into rocks
You can go also go up to the top rocks near the treasury for an additional fee (around £10 Jordanian pp) to get the best shots. You can also get a buggy back to the top for same amount. The horses are not free as the bedions will claim as they expect a tip at the end.
Worth noting that besides the treasury this there isn’t much else that’s really interesting that you can see in the time period. We had about 3 hours there before returning to the coach and repeating the journey home. There was a museum at the start of the Trek but no time to visit.
Only negative was most of the group we travelled with were Russian who had no interest in respecting queues. You could be waiting for the toilet and they push in aggressively. Also on the Ferry they put bags on seats and refused to move them when asked so we had to sit on the floor. I appreciate this is no fault of the guide or company.
I’m glad we did this trip from Sharm El Sheikh when closby to Petra as I think it would have been more difficult to pack into a separate trip had we been in Amaan Jordan.
Would recommend if you want to see the Treasury specifically
