Our Gio Tours excursion from Puntarenas was fantastic, but honestly, our guide Juan was the absolute star and the reason it was so memorable. Without his incredible sense of humor and engaging energy, the day could have felt routine—he kept everyone laughing, relaxed, and fully involved from start to finish.
The port pickup/drop-off was seamless, the fruit market stop was delicious (those fresh mango samples were out of this world!), the Tarcoles River pontoon cruise delivered wild crocodile sightings and many birds, and the authentic Costa Rican lunch was plentiful and tasty.
Juan brought the wildlife, culture, and history to life with fun facts and great stories. Gio Tours delivered a perfect mix of adventure and local flavor, but Juan’s witty personality turned it into something special. Highly recommend—5 stars, especially for him! 🌴🐊 Thanks, Juan!

POSITIVES: We did get to see 3 crocodiles, including a male & female alongside our boat, as well as a macaw and a white faced monkey during our van ride. We also got to taste some typical fruit and have lunch. The guide & driver were informative & friendly. And we made it back to our cruise ship with enough time to get on it without worry.a
DISAPPOINTMENTS: This was billed as including a Jungle Safari Boat Tour down the Tarcoles River as well as a visit to a plantation to sample native fruit. We did sample native fruit but it was at a roadside stand along a very busy road. No plantation stop. And, while we did take a boat ride down the Tarcoles River, we were not in a jungle per se but a fairly open, wandering, muddy river with occasional tires & trash on the banks & on deadwood in the river. We did however see many bird species. Also, the river tour was billed as being 90 minutes long but it was about half that. And much of our 6 hours was spent in a comfortable, air conditioned van driving between the ship to the roadside stand to a bathroom stop to the river boat tour to lunch and back to our ship.

Our tour was delayed due to the breakdown of the first tour bus. But the company made up for it by adding a brief tour of Puntarenas itself followed by the regular tour once the new bus was available. The crocodiles and the butterflies were the highlights. Long tour but very good.

This was a fabulous picturesque trip from our tour guide who provide us with a very informative tour. He was always very good with timing. Food was great. We actually saw crocodiles, weather was hot hot, but extremely enjoyable. Made some of sugar cane juice and tasted it. Highly recommend this tour with this tour guide. Stupendous trip.

RE: Tárcoles, Puntarenas, Costa Rica TOUR
1) Staff on tour provided great services.
2) Transportation was excellent, although we did not see much jungle.
3) Main negative point - The river boat aspect of the tour was terrible to say the least. I was not informed that the Tárcoles river we were to travel upon, was the raw sewage outfall of the capital city of Santa Cruz. Myself and my partner could smell the stench of the river, observing toilet paper, diapers, garbage and other waste products lining both river shores. We felt totally let down by the sight and smells during the boat tour. (Caused stomach illness)
As advertised as an eco-Tour location, it did not fulfill the term!
We felt so sorry for the animals living in the area, particularly for the "Costa Rican "protected" crocodiles living in the sewage. I would strongly advise VIATOR to investigate the river personally and adjust the tour to not travel the Tárcoles River we travelled. I believe our money spent on this Tárcoles River, Puntarenas, Costa Rica tour was not that was advertised and are NOT satisfied.

This was a joke. Canned tour too many people no value for the consumer. Just a huge money grab. Tour stopped truce to catch up and add more people to the already overcrowded bus. Boat tour was cool. Everything else was a waste. The monkey viewing was driving a bus at 25mph down a dirt road with semi trucks and saying”nope not lucky today”. Lunch was aweful, and in a canned environment. Overpriced shopping center. There is not much I can recommend about this tour. Save the day and do something else. You could do the croc tour on your own and save 5 hours in an overcrowded bus.

• The details said it would be an air-conditioned minivan which suggested a small intimate flexible group – it wasn’t. It was a full-size coach which was completely full. Speaking to people who took other tours in mini vans, they were able to go searching for Wildlife which in a full size coach we were unable to do.
• The guide mentioned to some passengers that the tour company had emailed Viator to explain that they would not be able to visit the monkeys as this has been affected by a recent storm. And apparently the tour company had taken the decision not to put anything in its place. However, this information was not passed through by Viator which meant that participants were given no opportunity to decline the tour when this was an important part of the decision to book this particular tour.
• We had to sit right next to the toilet at the back and the smell from the toilet was quite nauseating - to the extent that we just wanted to get back to the ship and were very upset when we took a tour around the town as this just meant we had to endure the smell for even longer.
• The details said we would be visiting a plantation. We did not visit a plantation. We stopped at the side of a very busy noisy smelly road at what was a little more than a fruit stall.
• Other than the crocodile cruise, we did not see any other Wildlife.
• The details said we would be having a traditional Costa Rican meal. It was far from that. It was poorly organised and we had to queue for half an hour for what was effectively a school canteen meal. There were no details as to what each dish was so everybody in the queue was asking about the dishes when they got to the front – hence the reason it took so long for relatively few people to get their lunch. We also don’t believe that the meals on offer were typical Costa Rican meals. Our understanding is that chimichangas are Mexican! The rules for what you could and couldn’t have were also complicated – one protein and four sides. However, a chimichanga counted as half a protein and half a side! What we were told was lasagne (not Costa Rican in our opinion – we believe it originates from Italy!) actually transpired to be rice with cheese on top. There was no atmosphere at the canteen which was totally soulless. People on other tours got taken to local restaurants and had a very different experience. We can only think that we were here because it was cheap.
• The shopping opportunities were at the canteen in an overpriced soulless shop. Very unlike the local market we would expect to have been taken to.
• There was a small butterfly enclosure, although nobody was told about this and some of us discovered it by accident!
• The lunch stop was so poor that we were the last back to the coach (we took advantage of the free Wi-Fi to speak to our son in the UK) and we were 15 minutes ahead of schedule! So nobody wanted to stay any longer than necessary.
* The crocodile cruise was excellent and the guide was good - but this was not value for money and not what was represented. We would rather have taken a tour that just did the crocodile cruise.
We asked the tour operator for our money back but they refused.

Our guide Jaun and driver Antonio were excellent. We did the Puntarenas highlights tour. We tasted all kinds of fresh fruit samples, went on the Tarcoles river cruise and saw crocodiles of all sizes and many birds. Our guide Jaun made sure we were able to see Macaws in the wild and howling monkeys. The Costa Rican buffet lunch was good and offered many choices. Beer was included! Antonio was a careful driver who got us where we needed to be in good time. Great fun. Thanks Gio Tours.

We had a very enjoyable day with our affable knowledgeable guide Jeancarlo of GioTours in a comfortable van with good AC, along with 6 shipmates. On the crocodile river boat tour (combined with other tour groups) we were up close with 3 or 4 big ones, plus lots of birds. But that 1 hour ride was about it for exciting CR wildlife viewing. The promised monkey sanctuary apparently had been closed 45 days prior due to abuse by locals, so instead we drove up a side road looking for monkeys in trees but none were spotted. The included lunch was at a giant tourist facility that all the tours go to, cafeteria style with a long line. The food was actually very good. The huge souvenir store was expensive. We had a nice stop at a fruit stand and sampled several local fruits, and to a supermarket to buy the local and Iess expensive brands of CR coffee vs the souvenir shop coffee. Jeancarlo explained crime has been on the rise in Puntarenas, something to consider if staying near the port.

Perfect overview tour of Puntarenas. Our guide, Jeancarlo, met us at the port in a small, comfortable van. There were 8 of us on the tour and there was plenty of room to spend out and have a window seat. The guide was very knowledgeable and well spoken. He talked about some of the crops that are grown in the region and our first stop was a produce stand where we got to sample several different fruits. Next, we boarded a sight seeing boat for a crocodile safari. We were able to get up close to several of them for amazing photos and there were many interesting birds and iguanas pointed out. Another short drive to a restaurant for the included meal. There were many options to choose from, served cafeteria style, and portions were generous. The monkey place the tour used to go to is now closed, so we drove into another area known to have monkeys. One of our fellow passengers spotted one, but we couldn't find any others. We stopped at a modern grocery store where the guide said we could purchase the brands of coffee that the locals prefer to drink. On the way back to the ship we drove through the town of Puntarenas where a few sights were pointed out.
Our driver made us all feel very safe, even when a semi entered the roadway from a driveway, cutting us off.
When we began our tour, our ship departure time was confirmed and we all agreed we would prefer to be back at the ship at least an hour before final boarding time.
If you only have a day in Puntarenas, this tour is a great option.

Enjoyable trip with a very informative and helpful guide. We saw monkeys, crocs and lots of interesting birds.
I only give it four stars not because it didn't live up to expectations but more because we've been on better tours in other places
They did deliver on everything they promised. Meeting point was easy to find. Lunch was good and as stated before we saw plenty of wildlife.

For the price I paid (it was on sale) is was an average experience. The main event (white face monkeys) seemed to be an after thought rather that the focal point. We almost missed them because it was getting dark. We spent too much time at the buffet lunch which was very late in the afternoon and fruit stand. Had I not spoken up, I wonder if we would've bypassed them all together. Thank Goodness our driver spotted them way up in the trees. The croc river trip was great. We saw many crocs including a mother and her 4 day old babies. We spent a lot of time in horrible traffic which wasn't the tour operator's fault but they should'be planned for it on the way back so we didn't almost miss the monkeys.

Group size was much larger than expected, a full size coach.
Participants were not punctual in returning to the coach - guide did not make it explicit that participants should be timely. As a result we missed the coffee tasting. There was no visit to see white faced monkeys as site was closed. We should have been notified.
Crocodile viewing was outstanding.

The tour fell very short. Pick up was fine - but everything else was just done ‘cheap’. We stopped on the side of a random dirt road to see monkeys - well not quite an appealing setting and hard to see anything. Another stop on the side of the road to taste fruit next to a traffic and our bus. We eat the same fruit every day so basically just trying to get people to buy more stuff from the market. Crocodiles - yes, that was fine. We actually saw some crocodiles and birds. Lunch was in a very hot facility so good not to get any food poisoning there - but the portions are big and if you are hungry will taste ok! Like someone else mentioned we also stopped at a local supermarket- totally unexciting- why should i take a tour to a supermarket?! It general very uninspiring tour with basically nothing else to see than crocodiles - but thats not worth the money for sure.

We are sorry you felt this way about our tour; as our many other reviews show, we deeply care about our passengers experience and wanted to provide some context to the tour.
Regarding the monkeys and wildlife sightseeing in general, when you travel between March and April in the tropics, you have to deal with some of the driest and hottest days of the year, and as wildlife is roaming freely —and we do not go to a zoo or a place where these animals are caged and available at all times for the passengers— we cannot guarantee that we will see them at the easiest places or as close as we would wish. We do our best to take our customers to areas where they are most visible, but that's just how it is with wildlife.
We also wanted to clarify that the fruit stand is not just a stop by the road. We have a provider that offers a combination of different types of tropical and exotic fruit available for tasting. These fruits are finely chopped and presented to the passengers so that they can see the fruit and taste the difference between them. These are seasonal fruits, so this guarantees the best quality and taste.
The restaurant where we take our passengers has a buffet option with three different types of proteins and vegetarian options. This guarantees that there are food options available for every dietary preference, but it also includes salad, rice, beans, vegetables, fried plantain, chopped potatoes or carrots with peas, and a natural fruit beverage.
The supermarket visit is included in the description of the tour activities. You get to see what a local supermarket looks like and what type of food and products Costa Ricans eat and buy in our daily lives. This visit is also a great opportunity to buy any essentials you might be missing or to buy snacks, candies, or local fruit that you may not find anywhere else in the world.

Really fun experience with lots of Croc sightings and beautiful Macaws. Our guide Juan and driver Charlie were fantastic!! Juan took such good care of us and made the tour a real joy. Boat ride was fun seeing Crocs and birds.

Pablo was our tour guide, who took great pride in showing his areas highlights, with a great sense of humor, and information. We saw several toucans, howler monkeys, alligators, iguanas, and lots of birds. Easy to find tour because he had a sign with name of company. Picked us up at the cruise dock. Our tour had 8 other ship people, and 7 people from the ship didn’t show after a 20 min wait…..we should have left earlier. The lunch stop which was cafeteria style and was very good. Fish was fried, but delicious and not over cooked. Loved the plantains and whitish square veggie! He even made a stop at a drug store for someone!

Pablo was an excellent guide. Very knowledgable. Lots of time drivng was a downdside, but did see wild life. Lunch was good too.

The company was so easy to work with! Our arrival time was delayed, and they were so accommodating! We had a wonderful time on this excursion! Our tour guide Pablo made sure we were able to see as much wildlife as possible. We saw parrots, toucans and many animals on the Tarcoles River. Lunch was great, and the shop had a lot to offer.
