We had a wonderful night walk with our guide Justin. He was an amazing guide — very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and genuinely passionate about the animals and the forest. We got to see many fascinating animals, including a tarantula, an armadillo, several frog species, a sleeping howler monkey, a scorpion and even a porcupine. Justin shared a lot of interesting facts and made the whole experience engaging and memorable. Highly recommended!

    Enjoyable night walk...

Enjoyable night walk seeing kinkajou and an owl, some sleeping birds, bats, tarantulas, and ants. It was a full moon and there was a beautiful view with a night rainbow as well.

    Night walk is a must!

Seeing the cloud forest at night was a completely different and unique experience. We did the later tour (8pm) so that we could enjoy the sunset and while it would've been great to see the forest transition from day to night, there was still so much activity. Our guide was able to spot sleeping toucans, a tapir, and a tarantula! Pickup/drop-off at the hotel made it super easy. Highly recommend this experience in Monteverde!

    Wonderful Experience

Justin, our tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining, generous in giving us opportunities to take photos, and very good at finding unexpected sights in the nighttime forest, from a mother sloth cradling her baby in a tree high overhead to a bioluminescent scorpion to a sleeping hummingbird. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in the natural world.

    Great

Justin was a great guide. The trail isn't long, but there are a few steep areas. We saw scorpions, a tarantula, sleeping birds, and coati.

The weather can be cool. Justin did a great job finding birds, insects and frogs! He took some amazing pictures through his scope!

Pleasant evening in a cloud forwsr setting.

Guide helped us see creatures we would never have noticed with our untrained eyes. Picked us up from our hotel and provided us with lights for the tour.

    Superb tour and tour gude

    Maja_M, Jul 2025
The tour was wonderful: Justin was our tour guide and he brought his younger cousin, Joshua, so we had two dedicated and caring tour guides instead of one! Justin was incredibly knowledgable, calm, friendly, and had great rapport with other guides we passed during the tour. We saw so much: birds, bugs (from big stick insects and spiders to a sleepy tarantula), strangling fig trees, and more. Just has a great deal of knowledge and loves nature and his work. We were treated royally, and having done other tours in Costa Rica, this one definitely had the best tour guide.

    Justin was great!

Justin was amazing. We had a great time with him. He showed us so many animals we would have never seen!! He was great and we’d highly recommend this tour.

Highly recommend doing a guided night walk

We loved the night hike in Monteverde Cloud Forest. There are so many amazing animals to see at night, big and small. And night time photos turn out beautiful, especially of frogs! We saw different varieties of Toucans, tarantula, coatis, frogs and so many neat little creatures. Advise to take your own flashlight if possible. It was pouring rain on our walk but that didn’t affect it. Rain poncho would have been good to have but we stayed somewhat dry under the canopy. My son loved this and we definitely recommend it. Our guide Justin was great, local, and very knowledgeable. Pura Vida!

A nighttime tour of another world

A great experience. Our guide, Justin, knew a lot about the wildlife of Monteverde and we saw tarantulas, toucans, scorpions and other insects. Was amazing exploring the forest at night.

Justin was our guide for the night tour, we really appreciated his kindness, knowledges and experience. Thanks to his sight we managed to see plenty animals with explanations. That was a really nice experience to do the night tour, even though it is a bit expensive for what it is, a track loop in the forest.

    Good tour

Very nice tour. The guide was good at finding and showing different animalsk. He helped us take good photoes.

    Amazing!

Our guide was very informative, knowledgeable and so excited to see and show us an armadillo on the ground, porcupine in the trees. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Great guide, thank you so much.

    Felt Stressful and Exploitive

    Todd_R, Jun 2024
The tour felt corporate, exploitive of the animals, and overly focused on just getting people pictures for social media. It our tourguide heard a report over his walkie talkie of a potential animal sighting from one of the several tourguides in the area, he would make us rush through the dark to that location. At one point we traversed the *exact* same section of trail flat least four times in a row in an attempt to see something. Additionally, when he saw a tarantula deep in a hole in a tree, he antagonized it with a stick to draw it out. If all you care about is seeing animals and getting pictures, and you don't care how it happens, you may enjoy this your. If you are interested in a more relaxed tour that seems to seek to minimize it's impact on the animals, I'd recommend Santa Elena Reserve's Sounds of the Cloud Forest tour instead.

    Must do in Monteverde!

    Erica_L, May 2024
Such a great experience! We saw so many animals and our tour guide was great. Even if we hadn’t seen anything, it would have been a fun experience to run around in the forest at night!

    Great tour!

Kendall was a great guide lots of information and had a great eye for spotting wildlife. Saw frogs, insects, birds and a tarantula!

    Misleading.

What Viator doesn't explain in the listing for this tour is that it's not actually in the official cloud forest reserve. It is thorough one of the local private tour companies that is described as the most commercial on a few websites I've since cross-referenced. I wish I knew this before we booked. The walk takes place on a small and fairly trotted-over farm that does have a forest on it but it's by no means the cloud forest reserve. It was packed with large groups of people all chasing down the same one sloth and viper and scorpion, which seemed a bit suspect if not simply disappointing. Please make sure you research the company you are booking with. There are many 'night walk' tours available and they're all at different locations. Only one is offered at the official Cloud Forest reserve. Make sure you book with them directly or choose a well reviewed company and book with them directly. You will not know who you're getting through this site.

    Dissatisfied Explorer

Walking through the rain forest at night and experiencing nature up close was awesome, but: After viewing your online photos, I was very disappointed. The photos displayed bats, frogs, snakes, and much more, yet after a 2 hour walk, all I saw were 2 tarantulas.

    Response from Host, Nov 2023

Dear William, Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on your Monteverde Cloud Forest Night Walk. We genuinely appreciate your feedback and are delighted to hear that you found the experience of walking through the rainforest at night to be awesome. We understand your disappointment in not encountering the variety of wildlife featured in our online photos. Nature, being wonderfully unpredictable, sometimes chooses to keep its wonders more discreet. While we strive to showcase the diverse fauna of the Cloud Forest, we want to express our sincere apologies that the sightings during your walk did not meet your expectations. Wildlife, as you experienced with the tarantulas, can be elusive, and their presence is beyond our control. Our professional local tour guides always strive to find the wildlife, employing their deep knowledge and passion. However, as you've witnessed, sometimes these creatures prefer to remain hidden, adding an extra layer of mystery to the rainforest experience. We value your understanding of the unpredictability of nature, and we are committed to continually improving our communication to ensure that future explorers have accurate expectations. We genuinely appreciate your feedback, and we hope that, despite the variance in wildlife sightings, you were able to appreciate the unique and enchanting atmosphere of the Monteverde Cloud Forest at night. If you have any further comments or if there's anything specific you believe we can enhance, please don't hesitate to share. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow from your experience. Lidieth, owner The Faro Travel Costa Rica Family WhatsApp and Telegram: +506 8578-4040

Wish we saw more unique animals

    Bina_P, Feb 2022
Christian is a guide who helps keep everyone safe and does his best to help everyone see what he sees. Unfortunately, it seemed we were being shown some standard and non-unique living creatures. We saw a racoon, an armadillo, a firefly, a grasshopper, a tarantula, etc. Coming from Texas, we hardly say anything that we may have not seen in Texas. Also, our tour was shorter than we expected. It was not a 2 hour hike. It seemed like too much time was spent in picking up and dropping off and only a little over an hour actually spent on the night hike.

    Response from Host, May 2022

Dear Bina_P, First of all, I want to thank you so much for supporting our family-owned and operated business by sharing your words and booking with us! It has been a pleasure having you with us. I am also very happy to hear that Christian contributed to enhancing this experience, he is a very knowledgeable and professional tour guide. This experience is perfect for nature and wildlife lovers and there is much more you can see on this night hike, we are very sorry you did not get to see much. Unfortunately, we can't control wildlife since it is unpredictable and therefore cannot guarantee that you will see it. We also cannot guarantee the weather and it might have affected that night. About the tour duration, there are some factors that can contribute to this as the walking speed and the number of animals that are out that night to appreciate. Thank you again for sharing your comments with us and please contact us if you decide to plan a second vacation to Costa Rica with us 🙂 Pura Vida!
