This was a quick stop for us in Picton, as the cruise ship had a really early departure. The guide was fun, and they had all the equipment we needed. We went to several coves to see the local fauna, and also saw a few stingrays.

My wife and I planned this relaxing kayaking experience in the morning before taking our ferry in the afternoon. Beautiful relaxing experience with Matt, our friendly and knowledgeable guide.

Today we had our kayak tour and we would definitely recommend that! Our guide was very attentive, well organised and gave us interesting insights not only into New Zealand's nature but also into its history and culture.
Water was available to buy on site and dry bags and jackets could be borrowed for kayaking.
At check-in, we were given details about the route and were able to ask any questions. The guide first took us by van to Ngakuta Bay, where we received safety instructions. The tour was not too strenuous, and we were able to observe animals at our leisure. We saw starfish, manta rays, sea cucumbers and spotted shags. During the tour, the guide provided us with fascinating information about Maori and New Zealand history and culture. Afterwards, we were taken back to our starting point.

Kayaking in Queen Charlotte Sound was an incredible experience from start to finish. I travelled with my two children (aged 10 and 12), and as first-time kayakers we felt completely at ease and well supported the entire time.
Before arrival, all our questions were answered promptly via chat, which already gave us confidence in how well organised the team was. On the day, everything ran smoothly and professionally. Our main guide was Madeline (apologies for forgetting the other guides’ names), and they were absolutely wonderful—calm, friendly, attentive, and incredibly reassuring.
We kayaked approximately 10 km over about 2 hours and 18 minutes. The group included people of various ages and abilities, and the guides made sure everyone was comfortable, safe, and well looked after throughout. Despite it being our first time, we were able to relax and truly enjoy the experience at our own pace.
On the return trip, we were taken back by van, and our guide shared fascinating insights about the local settlements and history, including how Queen Charlotte Sound got its name. The storytelling was engaging and informative—an unexpected but lovely bonus to an already amazing day.
Every part of the experience felt thoughtful, professional, and welcoming. We loved how at ease the team made us feel, especially with children, and how well organised everything was.
We loved every bit of this experience and would absolutely come back to do it again. Highly recommended to families, first-timers, and anyone wanting a peaceful yet memorable adventure.

Our guides, Helen and Alex were exceptional in their knowledge of fauna, sea creatures and sea birds. Helen being a sailor knew a bit about how challenging the waters are. The kayaks were well equipped and it was fun for my husband and I to kayak together in one kayak. We each have our own so this was a new experience. Thank you.
Paula_U, Mar 2025
We are older and out of shape. When the wind came up on the sound paddling required some effort. The guides were great and offered tips to make our paddling more efficient as we were lagging behind the group. They were patient, kind, and very informative and knowledg
eable. We had a great time! Thank you, Helen, Alex, and Martin.

We had a wonderful time sea kayaking with our experienced, knowledgeable guide, Helen. We learned so much about the port of Picton and its history and got up close to many wildlife, including huge stingrays, starfish, jellyfish, and many beautiful native birds. The length of the trip (3 hours) was just right, and we were warm and (mostly) dry. Highly recommend!

Literally one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen! Stunning views, friendly and knowledgeable tour guides and nice stable kayaks. Loved every minute of it!
Sally_C, Dec 2024
As intermediate kayakers, we thought this was a perfect time frame and challenge for us. We appreciated the thorough pre-departure safety orientation and the large map on site to illustrate our route. Jenna, our guide, provided commentary at points along the way so we learned about the region, culture, and wildlife. Trip was well-organized and staff was helpful before and after. We had a sunny, fairly calm day and that added to the beauty of the trip!

Lovely tour. Guides were knowledgeable. Lots of safety precautions. Wore kayak apron, which was a first, but didn’t need as much as sea was calm. The sounds are so beautiful- saw eagle rays, jelly fish and a seal.

This is my second time taking a kayaking tour with Wilderness Guides! It's a great way to see more of the Marlborough Sounds during a visit to Picton. We saw jellyfish, an eagle ray, and plenty of seabirds while out on the water. I would definitely recommend!
Brittany_H, Aug 2024
The guide was really knowledgeable about the local plants and animals. He did a great job at pointing out the interesting things for us to see, and had the patience to let us take the time to see them. Your feet will get wet, so keep that in mind when deciding on footwear. I went barefoot and brought sandals in the dry compartment for after the kayak.
Barbara_H, Mar 2024
Relaxed informative tour.
Saw a variety of bird and sea life.
As an older couple we didn't feel out of place with a couple of young men.
