Amazing experience — informative, interactive, lots of fun and, of course, the music is fantastic. Truly enjoyable.

Call before you go

My wife and I visited Nashville this past weekend to celebrate her birthday, and one of the experiences she was most excited about was visiting the National Museum of African American Music. I purchased tickets through Viator about a week in advance, expecting we’d have ample time to fully explore and enjoy the exhibits. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the museum around 1:30 PM, we were informed that we only had about 45 minutes to view the exhibits due to the museum closing early that day. We were told that the space had been booked on short notice, which required an early shutdown. While staff did mention that we could return the next day for free, that wasn’t an option for us since we were leaving town the following day. We were also unaware ahead of time that admission was free due to MLK weekend, and more importantly, we were not notified in advance that the museum would be closing early. The museum officially opened at noon, so arriving at 1:30 PM did not seem unreasonable. Because of the time constraint, the experience felt rushed, and we weren’t able to fully engage with or appreciate the exhibits as intended. This was disappointing, especially given the significance of the museum and the anticipation surrounding the visit. With better communication—whether through Viator or direct notification about the early closure—we could have adjusted our plans accordingly. The museum itself is meaningful and impactful, and I truly wish we’d had the time to experience it properly. I hope future visitors are given clearer advance notice so they can fully enjoy everything the museum has to offer.

Musi History

It is not laid out in exact chronological order but chronological order in each segment. It is really large and spread out. Quite a lot of information.

Great self guided tour

Awesome museum. The opening short film was extremely well done and informative. The exhibits were wonderful and detailed. It is a small museum, but an absolute must do.

Well worth the 2 hour drive

The interactive music videos were an excellent touch. The historic flow of music evolution. All in all this was very well presented.

The National Museum of African American Music was very nice , clean , & informative of the music culture.

Amazing History and Musical Technology

cinda_m, Sep 2023
This is a hidden gem in Nashville. The museum is state of the art and the most fun was to use the technology to listen to recording artists, past and present! The history was well displayed - though there was a lot of it. We spent 3.5 hours here and were amazed at the history and the inter-relationship of the musicians and their music and impacts on the music we hear today.

Magical Musical Surprise

JuLonda_R, Sep 2023
What an AMAZING time I had at the National Museum of African American Music Nashville!!! I loved the interactive experiences the museum provided both visual and audio-JUST INCREDIBLE!! The storytelling for each genre and era of music intertwined with immersive explorations throughout the museum was simply powerful! Simply not enough time in the day to finish touring the entire museum but I had a fun time trying!! I must add the National Museum of African American Music Nashville staff were all pleasantly helpful and welcoming!!! Encourage everyone to visit and partake in this wonderful museum of African American musical history!!!

Wonderful History Lesson..Thank You

cinnamon_f, Sep 2023
I absolutely love the music throughout the museum. The history and legacy of all African American genres. I danced inside this room while my husband! Looked through the glass. The clothes and albums displayed were great. It's really big inside.

A Welcomed Wealth of History

Deon_S, Sep 2023
The experience was amazing. The best information about the history of African American music I’ve seen. Only negative there wasn’t more and I haven’t received my downloads of music I purchased.

An attraction for all

Yolanda_E, Sep 2023
I enjoyed the interactive experience with the wristband. For $5.00 you can visit the kiosks and create your own music and save the Playlist that's emailed to you as a keepsake. It was nice to see the accomplishments of African Americans in music through the years. It would nice to have something like this in my hometown.

Great Tuesday outing!

amberdeereche, Aug 2023
I like how you are able to tour the museum at your own pace. My favorite part was the interactive stations where were you could create a song or produce a beat.

Engaging

BrendaE_B, Aug 2023
Most memorable areas were the many interactive music history stories using the wrist band. Being able to save some experiences for download later. Though someone else was in my video singing with the choir. I didn't get my created song. There was practically no waiting and very good price for the experience. Overall, it definitely was worth the visit.

WE are..... Black Excellence

V_S, Aug 2023
From the moment I walked through the double doors I knew right then and there I was EXACTLY WHERE I NEEDED TO BE! This National Museum is all of the things. No words can indicate how I felt (and still feel). My emotions were all over the place. On a 2.5-3 hour roller coaster. Oh My Gayness- My People..... Boiiiii, oh boi-oh boi! BLACK IS SO BEAUTIFULL (yes, full with 2 l's)! WE are so DOPE; so BRILLIANT; so CLEVER; so AMAZING, so CREATIVE; so FASCINATING; so RICH, so TASTEFUL; so MOVING; so POWERFUL; so OUTSPOKEN; so DARING; so INTELLIGENT; so BRIGHT to infinity. WE ARE..... I AM..... Don't hesitate- just go.

The trip to the museum was worth it!

Visiting the museum with my husband while visiting Nashville for the first time. It was experience that I have passed on.

Learning more about my roots and how the blues was founded. I also loved that my daughters got to experience the Museum.

A Must See

Jolisa_D, Jul 2023
Loved, loved, loved it! Exceeded expectations! Engaging and interactive! Educational fun for all ages.

Beautiful but no guides

Melissa_C, Jul 2023
Beautiful museum that made me even more proud to be black. However, the young lady who checked us in wasn’t very friendly. The museum needs guides walking around to assist with interactive exhibits. One lady explained things to a group that came out of the Roots theatre after our group left. She was nice but I had questions as I was going through the exhibits and there was no one to ask.

Excellent must see

Alice_F, Jul 2023
This is an absolute must see for everyone but emphasis for the African American experience. My family and I truly enjoyed the history tour and video. The music was great. I wish we had more time (our fault) to walk around.

Great self guided tour....

Marchell_W, Jun 2023
