Budget camping a few things to be aware of

Anna_C, Jan 2025
Olailepo Mara Camp is one to avoid and it’s a shame that the people who work there make it this way. We were greeted by Frank the manager a very personable and well spoken man who insists on you buying him a beer at the campfire and holds you to it at the end at checkout when he insists to have you sign out so he can make one last attempt to shake you down for a drink you owe him after spending $300/$100 per day in a tent in the middle of nowhere they should be offering me a drink. No-drinks are not included, so beware because they are happy to bring you anything you want but they will inflate the price so they can offer themselves a kickback and when questioned and have discrepancies with price they will follow you out to your vehicle (lady manager in kitchen-did) until you pay to make sure the money is paid on that cheap bottle of red wine so talk prices up front or there should be prices posted on bar!! On the 3rd day I was informed that I can shower because now there is hot water because they pumped the line but it was already time to leave and I spent 3 days taking cold shower. Beds were made up comfortable and the one towel that they provided is one I cut up for rags when it’s seen better days!! Premises are clean but there are monkeys so make sure tents are zipped down!! Ian in the kitchen does a great job but it’s pretty much a repeat of the same meal everyday!! Jackson greets you warmly at check in and checkout!! There’s no security or gate like other camps and the entrance road to camp was very bumpy and filled with cervices from rain. Such a cute place with such great potential if employees were not running it in a shady manor!! Internet was basically only working a few hours a day in the dining hall and would be nice to seat by the fire at night in a comfortable chair as opposed to seating in a metal straight back plastic covered dining chairs. Spend the extra money and stay elsewhere where we heard/saw had tents, pools and better selection of food.

Amazing experience ✨

If you have to choose the guide, ask for Peter, really nice and complete experience with him. He’s the best of Kenya. We were sleeping at the Forest Camp, eat good food and sleep in tents.

Hello Kasmi, Thank you for your kind words! We're delighted to hear you had a wonderful experience with Peter and enjoyed your stay at the Forest Camp. We hope to welcome you back for another great adventure. Regards Sylvia

A Great Experience

Nomads_W, Jan 2024
The tour experience was amazing. The van ride was rough and if you are tall, your legs will be screaming. At the end of the day, we were able to see and experience the Big 5 and that was the goal. My tour guide went the extra mile and he made up for the vehicle. He always placed us into the best position to catch the most beautiful photos. The food served wasn’t great! But it was fuel to feed your soul. My bed was comfortable, the shower was hot and you will have a mosquito net. All in all the trip was amazing and affordable.

Response from Host, Jan 2024

Hello Nomad, Thank you for sharing your experience! We're glad to hear you had an amazing tour despite the rough van ride. It's great that your guide ensured you had the best photo opportunities and made up for any discomfort. We appreciate your feedback on the food and accommodations. We're delighted you were able to see the Big 5 and found the trip both enjoyable and affordable. We hope to welcome you back for more adventures in the future. Regards Sylvia

Nice tour but very...

John_S, Aug 2023
Nice tour but very dishonest operator. The operator promised to arrange my transfer to the airport for a fee but did not do so. When I contacted her, she said to get my own ride and she’d pay for it remotely. When I arrived, she refused both mine and the taxi drivers calls, leaving me responsible for the payment

Response from Host, Sep 2023

Hello John, We're glad that your safari went well and you enjoyed almost every bit of it. We're truly sorry to hear about the transfer issue you encountered. This is not in line with our usual standards, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. The agreement was we would arrange the transportation for you and NOT the payment, which we did. We appreciate your feedback and once again we sincerely apologize. Regards Sylvia

Awesome Safari

Anonymous, Jul 2022
This was an awesome experience and given the price, it was excellent! Just be aware that budget means it’s not a Land rover or Range Rover but a converted Nissan which did the same job as the other vehicle. Also - the tent is an upgrade as it’s not on the ground and there’s a zinc roof above it - plus it had a bathroom with a shower, sink and toilet. Expect budget type meals but overall it was an amazing experience. Once in a lifetime.
