Itinerary

Bring your walking shoes and a healthy appetite on this culinary tour of Montreal’s Jewish neighborhood. Make your way to the area in the late morning to meet your local foodie guide, and set off by foot through the charming historic streets. Your first stop is a deli specializing in smoked meats in the district of Outremont, home to a large Hasidic Jewish community. Enjoy a taste of three dishes used in traditional Jewish cooking while your guide gives an overview of Montreal’s culinary makeup.

Continue on to a local kosher bakery to sample sumptuous Jewish desserts, which may include chocolate babka, triangular stuffed hamentashen, nutty rugelach and poppy seed cake. No Jewish food tour would be complete without a visit to a bagel joint, so taste for yourself what some claim to be Montreal’s best bagel at the next stop.

In between tasting stops, admire the neighbor’s diverse architecture and listen to your guide share tales of famous former residents, such as writer Mordecai Richler.  To get a true feel the neighborhood’s dining scene, pop in to a local restaurant that’s been dishing up authentic Jewish dishes for more than 80 years.

By the end of the tour, expect to eat five to seven different samples that make up a satisfying meal.

Failed walking tour of Jewish Montreal

Steven_F, Oct 2025
If you use a walker or cane this is not for you My wife uses a walker and we couldn’t keep up with the group. After eating and the deli we fell behind the group quickly and had to take a taxi back to our hotel

Response from Host, Oct 2025

I agree with that. We cover 3.3 km's and 8/9 stops in 4 hours. It is a challenge to keep the tour on time with people who do not have mobility issues and we cannot spread the tour over 6 hours. It isn't fair to the other clients. If you have mobility issues, I suggest a tour that is less dense and requires less walking or paying for a private tour: either a shorter version of the tour or a longer version at your own pace. It simply isn't realistic to ask the guide or the people on a tour to make it several hours longer for a distance you may not be able to walk in the first place.

Delicious

Great tour w a wonderful host/guide - highly recommend!

Antara_D, Aug 2025
The food we sampled was very good and thoughtfully picked out (even pairing beverages w the food at the right places). Melissa was full of knowledge about the city, and not just its food culture (she was knowledgeable about that too). She has a friendly vibrant personality and is a great host. We had a bagel throw down, a smoked meat sandwich throw down and all kinds of other delicious samples including pastries and dessert. Melissa also helpfully provided book and movie references for different landmarks in the city, which we will be following up on. We were two adults w two kids and had a great time.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Thank you so much Antara! As someone who also loves book and movie references, I thank you for the ones you also shared. I really appreciate the thorough, kind and generous review! Maybe we'll see you on another tour someday!

Realizing what you have probably missed all your life

Edward_D, Aug 2024
Never forget the number of Montreal Meat samples we tried - all of great quality. Wonderful appreciation of the impact of Jewish food in Montreal , what a wonderful legacy to the families who started the various outlets and who continue to operate them and expanding their products. And I didn't know about this for my 80+ years

Response from Host, Aug 2024

Thank you Edward! We really try to celebrate the legacy of these establishments and the people behind and in front of them working hard to keep the quality of the food year after year. So many unique offerings in Montreal and it is the story of a community that has had such an impact on this city!

Amazing Experience and Highly Recommended

Sharon_P, Jun 2024
The Jewish Neighborhood food tour was an amazing experience. Every bite of food we had was delicious. The tour covers a fair amount of distance but the pace was very manageable for a wide range of people in our group. Beyond the food, the tour also covered on the history of the Jewish people in Montreal. We would recommend anyone who has an interest attend this tour and we are excited to try some of the companies other food tour offerings.

Response from Host, Jul 2024

Thanks Sharon!! I appreciate your thorough review and endorsing the tour!

Great!

Jennifer_E, Jun 2024
We had a great tour. The food was amazing- the best I had in all of Canada. Darren was very knowledgeable about the Jewish culture and the neighborhood in which we walked. Water was provided, which was nice on a hot day. What other reviewers said was true- in several places the restaurants were so small that there was no room to sit, so we ate on the sidewalk. Not ideal, but I’d rather have fantastic food and no seating than go to a place that might not be as good just because they are larger.

Response from Host, Jul 2024

Thank you for that! We also think it’s important to get the best food in- any way we can- and as many different amazing stops!

The weather was awful with buckets of rain yet all of our group stayed with Melissa as she was so very interesting

Beatriz_S, Oct 2023
All the venues and the actual history of the area. Melissa had lots of historical info and combined it with visual citing of the neighborhoods

Response from Host, Mar 2024

I really appreciate the review Beatriz and your guys' hearty enthusiasm. I remember that day. The weather was brutal but we still had a great time! :)

Eat the Jewish diaspora

Eric_N, Sep 2023
Melissa knows her stuff and she communicated it well. This was a very comprehensive tour with lots of good stories and food. This has many more stops than I was used to and it was spaced out just right as to not make me super full and turn down any food samplings. The portions as a single participant were great. Full bagels, half sandwiches and pastries that were out of this world. There was a good deal of walking, but not so much as to make me tired at any one point without a stop for a nosh. There was some flexibility in the tastings as one place was closed for the high holy days, we were able to get something in place of it. This tour hits the Jewish hot spots and every place you should be trying as a Jew in Montreal. It was great and I would definitely recommend

Response from Host, Sep 2023

Thank you so much Eric for such a complete review! It was a pleasure having you. You brought a lot of humour to the group!! It was a really great day!! Thanks again for taking the time for the tour and to review it!

Spectacular food tour

Cynthia_B, Sep 2023
Wonderful Jewish food tour in Montreal. My husband and I have gone on a number of food tours and this one really stood out. Melissa, our tour guide, was full of interesting facts and stories about Montreal. She was truly spectacular and we enjoyed the tour immensely. Thank you, Melissa!

Response from Host, Sep 2023

Thank you so much Cynthia! As a food tour connoisseur that means a lot!! All the best on your food adventures!

Best Montreal experience

Jacqueline_N, Sep 2023
The guide was exceptional. If you only have time for one experience, this should be it. The food scene is worth a big explore in Montreal. J. Newell

Great way to see Mile End

Megan_M, Sep 2023
This looks s a great experience. Don’t eat breakfast prior to the tour. Food was great as was the commentary. Lovely day!

Response from Host, Sep 2023

Thank you!!!

Highly recommended, worth the price if kashrut is not an issue

Gary_S, Aug 2023
Tour guide was extremely informative, heimish, easy going and flexible. I would drive back to Montreal to taste the bagels, pickles, chocolate babka and falafel again. Though we thought the meat restaurants were certified kosher, they were not.

Response from Host, Aug 2023

Thank you Gary! I appreciate the review! I appreciate you letting people know that the food is not kosher on this tour. Thanks for participating and reviewing! All the best!

Fantastic culinary and culturarl experience!

Michelle_K, Jul 2023
We were lucky enough to have a private tour with just our little group. We had a fantastic experience! The food was delicious, and Darren was an excellent tour guide! He was very knowledgeable, and answered all of our questions! It was awesome to get both some historical and current context and culture about the places and the food we were experiencing. Darren was happy to share his own experiences growing up in the area, and we all got to know each other over the course of the tour. We got some thoughtful swag at the beginning (water bottles were crucial in the heat) and we got to skip the line at a lot of iconic places. We covered a lot of ground and there were so many stops on the tour! We even got to compare some classics at a few different places. Darren is an excellent photographer and took pictures to help us document our trip. He pointed out a lot of beautiful murals and other non-food related landmarks along the way. Since it was just us we were able to take the tour at our own pace, lingering where we wanted and moving quickly through spots that were less interesting. Darren also had a lot of recommendations for what to do in the city, so it was great to do this tour at the beginning of our trip. Absolutely worth the money in amount of food, amount of time, quality of experience, 10/10 stomachs did not explode (nearly), brains did.

Response from Host, Jul 2023

Thank you so much for your detailed review and underlining Darren’s top-notch guiding skills. I’m so glad that you liked it and had a great day and private tour and Darren all to yourselves!! Hope to see you on another tour someday!

Delicious walking tour with Melissa

Marilyn_T, Jun 2023
We sampled bagels, smoked meat, falafel, ice cream, babka, and more on this wonderful tour. As good as the food was, it was not even the best part. The real treats were the the knowledge and humor of our guide, Melissa, who helped us understand the fascinating history of the Jewish community in Montreal. Wear comfortable shoes and skip a big breakfast!

Response from Host, Jun 2023

Thank you Marilyn! I really appreciate your feedback and giving people a teaser and telling them what to expect. You’re our best ambassador! Hope to see you on another tour someday!

Food, food and more food!!!

Susan_B, Jul 2022
The FOOD!!! Wow it was never ending and we missed two that were closed. Melissa was so knowledgeable and the history that she shared was interesting even though my hubby and I are not Jewish.. don't miss this or any of Melissa's tours, you willnot be disappointed.

Thank you so much Susan! I was so lucky to have you both on not one, but two tours! Both were really intimate groups too which made it extra enjoyable. It was a great day and the weather cooperated. You were both a treat to have and I wish you much more fun on your journeys!

A nosher’s paradise!
