This tour was a great intro to Montevideo. It was a good mix of history and food along the way. We got to try many things. Walter was very knowledgeable and also super kind to our children. We had a great time. Thanks, Walter!

It was a great sampling of Uruguayan food. Our guide was very knowledgeable and we also got a tour of the city as we went to different food places.

Walter was informative, flexible and on time. He adjusted to our energy level and interests. We had a very good time and would recommend the tour (and Walter) to anyone.

Keep looking for a different tour

Our guide was switched out just a few days prior to the excursion, we were on a cruise and didn't see this until we were in Uruguay. We have a lovely tour guide... BUT we didn't get a food tour - but a history tour. We asked several times about when we'd eat, and eventually were given a sandwich to split. I notified the tour operator after the fact and first they said they'd respond, after they didn't for a couple of weeks I reached back out to be told they have to profit margin on this booking and hoped I understood. I'd look elsewhere.

Hi Angela, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We’re truly sorry that the tour did not unfold as expected. We understand how disappointing this must have been, especially given the circumstances of your trip. At Guydeez, our goal is to create meaningful and enjoyable experiences, and we regret that we did not meet that standard on this occasion. We appreciate you also acknowledging the guide, though we recognize that this does not make up for the missing elements of the tour. We have already reached out to you directly by email to follow up on this matter. Once again, please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience, and we hope you will consider giving us another opportunity in the future. Warm wishes, Guydeez Team

Did not get what was advertised

I booked this private tour for my family of three people a few weeks before traveling to Montevideo. Two days after the booking, the guide contacted me via WhatsApp to introduce himself and ask for any food allergies and preferences in sightseeing. I said we liked the arts, architecture, and wine. The day we met, May 31, we walked around downtown for an hour before sitting down for our first food tasting. The guide ordered a few appetizers and drinks. We then continued on the walking tour, with the guide telling us about the history of the city, showcasing various buildings, and visiting different museums. Three hours flew by. The guide was super nice and knowledgeable. The reason I’m giving this tour a 2 star is because we signed up for the “Private Best Street Food [of Montevideo],” and I was disappointed that we stopped at only 1 café. We’ve been on food tasting tours in Paris, Buenos Aires and Auckland, and they usually take you to 5 to 6 places to taste a variety of foods and drinks. We paid almost $300 for a one stop food tasting tour; totally not worth it. We didn’t get what was advertised.

    Response from Host, Jul 2025

Hi Beatrice, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We're truly glad to hear you appreciated the guide’s knowledge and warm approach. That said, we’re sorry the tour didn’t match your expectations, especially in terms of the food experience. At Guydeez, we strive to offer tours that reflect what’s advertised and deliver real value. We understand how disappointing it can be when the experience doesn’t match your expectations. We’ve already contacted you via email to follow up directly. Thank you again for your feedback. Warm wishes, Guydeez Team

    Really enjoyed this tour...

Really enjoyed this tour with Alejandro who did a great job with our multilingual group. We got a lot of great information on the history and architecture of the oldest city, moving into the newer areas and some good food along the way!

    Nice walk-about tour with food

    Wendy_P, Apr 2025
Foodwise, our first stop was at an empanada shop with and extensive menu of filling options. We got a “traditional” one: beef, raisins and a few sliced olives (sweet/salty). We continued through the city (very walkable) and stopped for an assortment of Uruguayan food: Tartas (basically pies with different fillings. We had one with ham and cheese, tomato and sliced boiled egg. The other one was filled with spinach, egg and cheese (neither of us tried this one as we were too full!). Also an “Olympia” club sandwich which was pretty similar to the first tartas: ham, cheese, sliced egg, tomato, lettuce and sliced green olives. Then we had beef schnitzel (a thin steak, breaded and fried). They use very little seasoning - this would have been greatly enhanced by some sort of sauce. We continued walking and went into a few museums including one of photographs from the 1920s, 30s, 40s. Another was into a former president’s house turned into a museum. There was a large display of cooking items: canisters of ingredients, utensils, cookbooks, dishes, and fixtures. Also, very fancy mate cups and straws. We ended our tour with a dish of ice cream.

Nice walking tour in MTV. Stopped at one bar for some snacks and later had ice cream. I would recommend more of an explanation of what is expected prior to booking.
