My husband and I, in our late 60s, had a very good experience on this Rincon de la Vieja Volcano hike and river swimming. Diego, our guide, picked us up at our hotel (Andaz Papagayo) and we drove in his car about 2 hours to the volcano rim hike. The 2.5 mile hike was fairly easy, though with some slippery rocks I was glad to be wearing hiking boots. Sneakers also would be fine. On the hike we saw boiling cauldrons of mud, lots of tree species, and a few animals (lizards, wild turkeys, birds). Bring water. After the hike, we had a pleasant lunch at a family run restaurant. Following, Diego took us to a river known for its blue-green waters. We changed into bathing suits and leisurely floated down the river in tubes, lovely after the hot hike. Diego was courteous and informative about the countryside. His English, though a bit limited, was much better than our Spanish and we communicated well with a Spanglish combo. All in all a good day.
