A beautifully authentic experience from beginning to end! David is an absolute delight, and gave us a thorough tour of the best market I’ve been to in memory. The freshness of the seafood and veg helped to make the culinary experience a delicious one. Can’t wait to come back for another taste!

This was such a unique and wonderful experience. The market was fascinating and then coming back to cool together was fun and interesting! I need to eat gluten free and they could accommodate me without making me feel left out!

Lots of fun. A short walk to a big market full of seafood and other stuff, then back to cooking place. We ate all sorts ofsmall sea creatures and paella,

David and Fiona were perfect hosts and their multi use space was great for our small cooking class. 6 of us sat around the kitchen counter cutting, mixing, and preparing our meal after a field trip to the local three story market to purchase fresh clams, mussels, scallops, calamari, chicharrones, tomatoes, cheese and bread. The appetizers were fresh off the stove or out of the oven, except the tomatoes and quince which were perfect to accompany the seafoods, each appetizer delicious as the last. David kept cooking the paella and we moved from our counter seats to the large table for the main course. It was delicious and washed down with generous pours of sangria. We had Santiago cake for desert that two of our class made. My mouth still waters as I think of all the great food and I smile as I think of the fun and experience. Ciao

David and Ana are very welcoming, and my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our cooking experience. We loved visiting the market, making delicious dishes that we had not tried before, and meeting like-minded, friendly people.

Fun time shopping at the local market, then cooking a wonderful meal. Ours was seafood based, which we loved. Max of 8 people so hands on. Food was excellent and David was an informative and enjoyable host.

We had an amazing time at Pencil & Fork. We started by visiting a very large fresh seafood market (with meats, cheeses, olive oil, and vegetables) on the upper floors. Then, we returned to Pencil & Fork to cook all the fresh ingredients we had just purchased. Unlike other cooking classes I've taken, we actually participated in the cooking, learning as we prepared fabulous, traditional Spanish dishes. Then, we sat and enjoyed these very tasty dishes as a group. We had a great time, and I can't wait to try the recipes at home. I highly, highly recommend this tour.

We absolutely loved David’s Galician cooking workshop. I booked it as a birthday present for my husband and we spent the best morning discovering local produce in the market and then cooking a Spanish feast. It was such a memorable experience and we would recommend it to everyone! Gracias David :)

David and Anna, made us very welcome.
A truly wonderful experience, David took us the amazing market, it reminded me of Victoria market in Melbourne but on a bigger scale.
We were helped with the food preparation and tasted each dish as they were made, David answered all our questions too. The paella was delicious, thank you for such a great experience.

An absolute wonderful experience. Both Ana and David are a delight. David taught us so much about the delicious food we were preparing together. It was fun going to the market before we began preparation. A great time was had by all!

The hosts are delightful people and their facility is terrific. We had a lovely afternoon and appreciated the small group size (6 students, 2 instructors). Food safety/hygiene raised some red flags (how raw meats were handled, shrimp were not cleaned or deveined, etc) and we would've loved to see individual spices vs a packaged seasoning mix for the paella. We had alot of fun but unfortunately didn't feel that we learned anything about Spanish cooking.

We appreciate any constructive review and we are very glad you spent a nice afternoon with us. As explained in the description, this experience does not pretend to be a certified cooking lesson. Our aim is to create a collaborative cooking experience where everyone participates in the tasks (as much as they feel like). We provide each participant with individual kitchen tools (aprons, knives, cutting boards, etc) and we take food hygiene and safety very seriously. I am a safety and health certified technician myself. As you can see in the menu, there is not any raw meat, nor shrimps. Exceptionally that day, we bought chicken and shrimps because two of the participants didn't eat shellfish. The chicken was cut in individual cutting boards and then cooked in two ways: first we stirred it at a high temperature until brown and then we boiled it within the stock. In regard to the shrimps, the way I like to cook them is at a high temperature without being peeled. The purpose is to keep all juices in the pan and use them for the rice.
That is just my way of working with these products which I assure you IS completely safe, but I understand there are many other ways equally safe that you would prefer to follow.
Again, many thanks for your comments and we are glad you enjoyed this cooking experience. Thank you as well for letting me clarify how we work, and how we take all food hygiene and safety requirements very seriously.
Best regards
David

There isn’t enough character spaces to comment on how great this was. Ana & David were amazing hosts with so much attention to detail and a passion behind their mission of teaching elements of Spanish cooking by teaching not just how but why. The paella event was a blast and so much delicious food for the group to enjoy. The market walk was very informative and made you feel like you were a local. One of our attendees has a fish allergy and they completely went above & beyond making a non-fish based option with even special broth to ensure their experience was equally memorable in making their own paella & being part of the entire experience. Ana & David are great, their place is super cute and I would 100% frequent them regularly if I lived in La Coruña. 10 stars + fireworks. Will highly recommend to others.

What an amazing afternoon with this couple who used food to help tell the story of Spain, its culture and people! Both David and Ana were kind, knowledgeable and kept us engaged with not only the how but also the why of the food prep. Going to the local market and selecting the seafood, cheese and bread was an adventure within itself and great fun. And the meal (read feast) we had wan soooo delicious! I hope everyone gets a chance to spend an afternoon with David and Ana at Pencil & Fork

We always look forward to a culinary class experience with locals when we travel around the globe. Today’s market-to-table lunch at Pencil and Fork was an amazing experience. We shared the kitchen/dining experience with a couple from Long Island and our hosts, David and Ana. Our day was filled with delicious food, wonderful wine and great conversations. Mary Jo baked this delicious almond cake for our dessert!

We recently attended the Market and Cooking Class with David and Ana at Pencil and Fork, and it was a fantastic experience! The day began with a visit to the local market, where we had the opportunity to see and select fresh ingredients. David and Ana were excellent guides, providing insights into the best produce and sharing their passion for food.
After gathering our ingredients, we headed to the cooking class where we prepared a delicious meal that included paella, a wonderful appetizer, a fresh tomato salad, and almond cake for dessert. David and Ana's instructions were clear and engaging, making the cooking process enjoyable and educational.
The hands-on experience, combined with the friendly and knowledgeable guidance from David and Ana, made this class truly special. If you're looking to immerse yourself in the local culinary culture and learn to cook an amazing meal, I highly recommend the Market and Cooking Class at Pencil and Fork.

David and Anna were so friendly and welcoming. As we gathered together, everyone shared info about themselves. We loved the market shopping with David. He provided details about the culture as well as information about foods found at the market. While enjoying beer and wine, we created several tapas, a main dish and a desert. It was a great experience that we would not hesitate to recommend to others. Salud!

Friends and I just experienced the most wonderful Market visit followed by a fabulous cooking class at the Pencil & Fork in La Coruna Spain. Our hosts were the owners, David and Ana, who were delightful, insightful, and most enjoyable. The visit to the three story market within a few block of their location was so fascinating. The selection of fresh fish and seafood was limitless, as well as meats, cheeses and bakery. After David selected the best ingredients, we returned to their shop to prepare a delicious lunch. We were on a Celebrity cruise of Spain and France, and this was the highlight of our trip. The Pencil & Fork was a 10 minute taxi ride (about $6) from the port. The place is charming and spotless. The seafood lunch was simple to prepare and delicious to eat, accompanied by wine. And after the 4 hour experience, David and Ana suggested other areas of the city to explore (they are just blocks for the sea). If you are ever in this area I highly recommend this experience.

We have a fantastic time with David and Ana. There were 6 people at the event. It started off with a lovely tour of a local fish, met and veg market where David bought the items we were to cook. Fantastic to visit local places which ordinarily you miss when travelling in a place for only 1 day. We cooked delicious food and lovely to meet the other people. The place is beautifully decorated, generous with the wine and food was delicious. A really good couple of hours and great value for money.

Arrived at their business, Pencil & Fork, and were immediately greeted by David & Anna and offered coffee. After we enjoyed the coffee, headed to the Market with David and he showed us thru all the floors, discussed the type of seafood he was purchasing, as well as cheeses, etc. for our meal. After the purchases. Headed back to their great kitchen, and we began to cook! My husband (another Dave) began preparing appetizers while Anna taught me how to make an Almond Cake with only four ingredients. Had such a relaxing and fun time getting to know them and as well as learn about cooking Paella and La Coruna area. All the food and drink was wonderful (even my cake!). Would definitely take any class they are offering if we ever come back to the area. HIGHLY recommend. Best Viator experience ever!

Loved everything about this experience. David and Anna were the most gracious hosts in their beautiful shop. The food market was fascinating! We all participated in making a wonderful paella lunch and almond cake for dessert. It was delicious. This is a must do while in La Coruna.

David and Ana are charming hosts

This excursion is hosted by Ana and David - 2 of the nicest people you will ever meet. Their shop is called pencil and fork b/c they believe anything could be taught through food and cooking.
We started our excursion w/ a short walk to the public market and selected all of our ingredients that were in season. Then we started to cook altogether. Everyone had a different role. The apps were mussels in white wine, steamed cockles, prawns, bread w/ melted cheese, incredible scallops, ham. The main course was a spin on paella. They will tell you the story of true paella w/ rabbit. Then we had the most delicious almond cake w/ excellent coffee that my son made. An authentic , fabulous experience - then we walked along the beach to get back to the ship. The highlight of our trip so far!!!

One of the highlights of our trip to Galicia. Don't hesitate to book! Ana and David are extremely lovely, warm, and interesting people, and we enjoyed spending time with them. The cooking demo (and the food that we ate) were brilliant. Truly declicious! It was such a great experience all round. They even tolerated our Spanish and gave us much encouragement in using it. We heartily recommend their business to anyone thinking of coming to A Coruña and we hope that we will be able to visit their place again ourselves, on our next visit up there.
Response from Host, Jul 2023
More than welcome to our kitchen guys if you are in Galicia again!!
Many thanks for your visit!
