It was a great way to spent the afternoon learning about the Sencha-do Japanese Tea Ceremony. We were amazed how many different tea ceremonies exist and how long it takes to learn them.

We found the tea school easily by the advice from the host. We were touring the Kitano area and close to the great Kitano Tenman Shrine there is the Kyoto branch of Higashiaberyu Sencha school. We were greeted by the young master (wakasoushou) of the school himself. He had specifically travelled from Tokyo to instruct us. In the waiting room we received cooling cold tea and were treated to a short video explanation of the history of this special tea ceremony. Afterwards, we received a demonstration of a casual and enjoyable Sencha ceremony. After that, a hands on workshop for brewing the tea was conducted and we enjoyed a chance to ask questions and received certificates for completing the workshop.

Overall, this was a great activity for our family, We were lucky enough to have the grandmaster of the school teach us the ceremony. We did learn a fair amount of the history of the school and history of the ceremony including the fact that this was a different type of cerement than the regularly matcha ceremony. We actually brewed our own tea from whole tea leaves. What we liked was the fact that after watching the ceremony, we each had the opportunity to do it ourselves. Overall, this was good experience.

The instructor was fabulous sharing his family history and interesting details in the history of this type of tea ceremony which is unique to others in Kyoto. The experience was very personal and my kids really enjoyed it. The instructor allowed us all to perform the ceremony with step by step guidance. We enjoyed our time and was one of our highlights in Kyoto! Highly recommend this very special experience.

I personally had interest in tea culture and religion that I decided to come. It was quite interesting to learn the tea ceremony by brewing tea in Japan. Most of people know matcha tea but not the brewed tea. The taste is quite sweet and flavourful. It os amazing to learn myself how to brew the tea. I have learned about the tradition and schools of the tea masters in Japan. I am also hoping my friends to come and try this workshop too.

Easy to find location and very friendly and knowledgeable tea ceremony experience where we learned about the history of Sencha, observed a demonstration of the ceremony with context of what was happening and the history behind each part of the tea ceremony. We also got to practice making and pouring tea ourselves in a traditional tea house setting. Genuine tea ceremony experience and highly recommend it!

Our guides were very polite and kind! Authentically taught us their tradition of serving tea. It was delicious and informative. Heads up - it's hard to find based on instructions provided on Viator. We had to ask for help finding..... no way we would have found based on directions online alone.

Das Haus konnte einfach gefunden werden. Die Tee Zeremonie war sehr schön. Unsere Fragen wurden alle zu unserer Zufriedenheit beantwortet. Ingesamt war es ein tolles Erlebnis das ein Stück japanische Geschichte übermittelt. Danke an die Performer war hervorragend und cool ein Teil der Geschichte mitzunehmen.
