Itinerary

Part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Godwana Rainforests of Australia, Lamington National Park is a delightful destination for exploring Queensland’s subtropical beauty. Your full-day tour begins with pickup at your Brisbane or Gold Coast hotel and a scenic drive to the park. Along the way, stop at the Gallery Walk to chance to stretch your legs and browse unique local arts and crafts shops, and admire sprawling views of the surrounding forest and Pacific Ocean from the top of Mt Tambourine.

Your base camp for the day is O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat — a family-owned nature resort in the heart of Lamington National Park. Soak up the pristine surroundings of the Gold Coast hinterland and enjoy a natural soundtrack of bird calls during your leisure time at the retreat.

Experience one of O’Reilly’s most popular activities with a treetop canopy walk. Stroll across nine footbridges suspended 45 feet (16 meters) in the air for a unique perspective of the subtropical rain forest. A guide will point out highlights of the diverse ecosystem and help identify unique species of flora and fauna.

Back on the ground, have an up-close encounter with native bird species like bowerbirds, wedge tailed-eagles, Albert lyrebirds and flocks of vibrant red-and-green king parrots during a guided bird feeding. These wild wonders may peck seed straight from your hand! You can also bush walk among the property’s beautiful trail system.

If you selected the lunch option at booking, savor a freshly prepared lunch at O’Reilly’s inviting on-site café. Snacks and O’Reilly’s estate-made wines are also available to purchase à la carte.

After departing the retreat, stop at a local alpaca farm to meet the friendly, furry creatures and take advantages of some great photo ops. Your full-day tour concludes with drop-off back at your Brisbane or Gold Coast hotel.

Wonderful and very informative day trip! The views on Tamborine and Lamington lookouts are spectacular our guide is very kind and knowledgeable and showed us wallabies and local birdlife as we saw them. I have several great photos of the lovely robin. Recommend to nature lovers and photographers, or any other who want to enjoy a relaxing day in the mountains.

Relaxing day out with a great guide

davidconie, Feb 2020
Timely pickup outside Sebel Hotel. Coach to transfer from Brisbane to Gold Coast was a bit grubby and required a good clean. Once we transferred coaches the new one was fine. David the guide and driver was very informative and very knowledgeable. Plenty of time at each stop. He pointed out many interesting things along the way, Alpaca farm and winery was good... we stopped to look at the view at Tambourine mountain...when we got to O’Reillys we had lunch. Food was quite basic and the value was not there as we had prepaid.. pie chips and a salad with too much dressing. It is a great spot and if they lifted their quality it could be a much better experience. The walk through the rainforest was great.. David our guide was very good and he even got the various birds to fly onto our hands and feed off the worms he supplied. The tree walk and 300 year old tree were very interesting, the rainforest was so peaceful and we even saw a small snake!! then we had some free time. Feeding the parrots was a hilight and be sure to buy the bird seed ... David gives you a $1 voucher to use instead if paying the usual $3 or $5.. one tray is enough. The parrots fly onto you head , shoulder and really are a treat. The drive back to BRISBANE was good and David pointed out our various wildlife including some Wallabies. Overall a nice day out and enjoyed the experience - David was a very good guide and whilst you could drive there yourself you would miss out on most of the interesting facts plus the sights. Thank you

A great tour especially for nature lovers

The bus was comfortable and air conditioned. The driver, Chris, was very knowlegeable about the places we visited and gave a very interesting commentary about them and the flora and fauna we saw along the way. The 2 hours at Lamington was plenty of time to walk a couple of the paths and enjoy lunch in the superb eatery where you could sit on the deck overlooking the fantastic views. I thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Very Good Trip

Very well organized trip and authentic and interrested personnel. The Park itself is well worth the visit and was good value for Money. The Birds are spectacular.

Wonderful trip!

The guide, David, really made the tour great. Made sure we would get to see the wildlife and gave interesting facts throughout the day.

Response from Host, Oct 2019

Thank you! David Preston is really devoted to his guiding job and loves showing our guests around. He is a long term employee but looks at the forest and it's inhabitants with fresh eyes every day! So glad you noticed, Allison @ JPT

loved it

I loved the trip, David our tour guide was excellent. The only thing I would suggest is to possibly bring your own lunch, food is quite expensive, was nice but expensive.

David was an amazing tour guide

Our tour guide made this a very memorable excursion. He shared is knowledge of the area, of the animal and of trees. He shared some of his worms to feed the birds. We had some folks on the excursion from Japan and he was fluent in Japanese so he shared the same info with them in Japanese. All-in-all an amazing tour thanks to our guide.

Okay tour for family of 3 (w/ 6-year-old)

Vicki_C, Jan 2019
Overall, the tour was okay. Our tour guide, Dave, was very knowledgeable, had great stories, and was an excellent driver. The bus trip is about 2 ½ hours of driving to/from the park and the bus holds @ 20 people. If you are easily carsick, make sure you are the first to get on the bus to choose your seats or mention it during booking. We stopped at a mountain town on the way up (45 minutes of free time) but there was no stop on the way back down (see #4 below). The Lamington National Park walk thru the tree tops was awesome (@ 20 minutes), and the bird feeding excellent. We purchased lunch with our tour and recommend you do so as there is very little time to order & eat otherwise – the food was fine, nothing extravagant about it. After eating, we had about 30 minutes to feed the birds (HIGHLY recommend this) before we got back on the bus. There are several areas where the company/tour can improve: 1) Our confirmation paperwork states that there would be hotel pickup – however, this is not the case. Luckily, we called the day prior to the trip to verify our booking and were told we must meet elsewhere instead (a 30-minute walk from our hotel).2) The man who checked us in was rather abrupt, did not verify our identity (asked for a name & # in our party only), & then said ‘wait over by the blue seats’. When asked a question, he made a huge sigh like he didn’t have time for it.3) While our tour guide connected readily/easily with bird watchers or local, he seemed to avoid the foreign travelers and kids (my kid tried to talk with him a couple times without success). Also, he openly criticized a passenger who joined our tour from the Gold Coast (‘why they couldn’t just rebook instead’) and then again when the passenger was 2 minutes late rejoining the group. 4) We did NOT go to the alpaca farm as was listed on the website itinerary. Our guide mentioned the alpaca farm early in our tour but later received a phone call and instead we swapped buses on our return trip to pick up 4 additional passengers at an amusement park. Although the alpaca farm was not a highlight of the tour, the passengers on the tour had no say in the itinerary change. I later reviewed the confirmation paperwork and the website and neither state the itineraries may change without notice based on the company/management needs or at the expense of the passengers. Be aware that you may not get everything you thought you paid for!

good daytrip tour

Zijun_C, Dec 2018
our guide Mr David Peterson was very experienced and knowledgeable, and able to keep up an interesting dialogue and commentary during the trip for us. he has a way with the creatures of the forest, coaxing all the native birds to come for us really made the trip memorable! only wish that at each place, we could stop for a longer period of time. still, i recommend this tour for a great day out from the city.

Great tour and well organized. My one criticism is to Viator who offers no lunch option with this tour. There is clearly a lunch option. the Drive combined guide was very knowledgeable, fluent in multiple languages and a true man of the bush.for instance, he stuck out his hands and birds came to him and knew animal calls, The O' Reilly Cafe is home to a reproduction plane from the 1988 movie Riddle of the Stinson. It is very interesting story about a flight from Brisbane to Syndney that crashed.

Amazing tour thanks to Super Guide...

YinPeng_W, Jul 2018
Amazing tour thanks to Super Guide, David! David is fluent in Japanese and he spoke both English and Japanese from the moment we boarded the bus till end of tour. There were some breaks of course, but we learnt so much. Many aspects on flora and fauna were covered in good details with stops to see actual thing. The one hour at The Gallery was pleasant for a bathroom break : coffee, wine tasting, local fare or early lunch etc. We had samples at the macadamia fudge shop. David ensured O'Reilly staff facilitate the prepaid lunch smoothly burgers, fish and chips : The queues are very long, so pack your own sandwich or prepay. After the 30 minute lunch, have your breath taken away as David takes you into the Park. He whistles and robins come feeding off our hands!!! Very informational, we went inside a hollow tree too. David showed us a real elaborate nest that the male Bower bird built to entice females. The male bird collects all blue items and place it around the nest! If we went on our own, we would have minimum experience. So Thankful to have a learned Guide like David! The walk is very eye-opening. There's free time to absorb all the natural settings. On the way back, David would stop for us as soon as he spotted wallabies or interesting Flora. We saw macadamia trees too. We saw a total of 11 wallabies in a few stops. THANK YOU DAVID, you made the trip so worthwhile!

Hui Min C, Jan 2018
The meeting place was very easy to find. The group was mixed, with some people staying at O'Reilly's overnight and some of us as daytrippers. The tour guide provided a lot of information about the flora and fauna, and we saw lots of birds. There is some independent time for lunch and additional hiking/bird feeding at O'Reilley's, before gathering at the bus and heading back to the city.

Coral M, Dec 2016
This is a long trip out of Brisbane. Once you get off the shuttle bus and away from the highway the day improves. Our guide/driver was excellent and very knowledgeable. I am just sorry I cannot recall his name. Chris, I think. I was glad of the stop at Gallery Walk to get a decent coffee and a cake - I would advise you get food here as the food at the park is not brilliant. We pre booked the optional lunch, which was off a poor standard. Take your own food. I am not a shopper so the short stop was adequate and there is a long drive ahead. The landscape you drive through is stunning, very windy roads and so glad I was not driving. The tree top canopy walk is not to be missed. I learned so much about the history of this country and about the wildlife on this trip. Seeing the bird that collect blue things in its bower was a bonus. On the drive down we saw pretty faced wallabies. All in all an excellent day out.
