      Very patient tea ceremony instructor

      Julie_G, Sep 2025
We were given a lesson from a very patient instructor on the steps of the tea ceremony. Despite our errors, she guided us to perform the activities ourselves through an interpreter. There were a lot of laughs as well as a serious side. It was a great way to learn about this cultural activity. We did this in conjunction with the calligraphy class as well as the flowing noodles. It was nice to be able to group the activities together. We would highly recommend The Space activities.

Thank you so much for joining and for your wonderful review! We’re so happy to hear you enjoyed the tea ceremony along with the calligraphy and flowing noodles. It’s lovely that you could experience and laugh together while learning about Japanese culture. We truly appreciate your kind recommendation and hope to welcome you back to Space Beppu again!

      Not quite what we expected

      Penelope_R, Jul 2024
Whilst we enjoyed our experience and the staff were very friendly it wasn’t quite what we expected for the cost. Ceremony was not in a traditional setting and we thought that we would get more than one cup of tea.

      Response from Host, Jul 2024

Hello Penelope,  Thank you very much for your honest feedback. Though I am glad you found our staff to be friendly, I am very sorry that the tea ceremony did not meet your expectations. Although the building is over a century old (a rarity in Japan), upon reflection I do understand that it looks much more ‘modern’ (both inside and out) than what you were perhaps led to expect based on the online description at the time of booking. We apologise for this, and will be re-writing the description to ensure that there is no further misleading information regarding the setting.  I also note you felt that only one cup of tea was not sufficient. We have taken this feedback on board and will look into increasing this. Again, I thank you for your review. Such feedback is very valuable in helping us improve our services.

      Underwhelming experience

Was interesting to learn the heritage of the tea ceremony process . Was a little underwhelming as an experience as expected maybe options to taste different teas . Not sure was value for money given setting.

      Response from Host, Jul 2024

Hello Vicki,  Thank you very much for your honest feedback. Though I am glad you found the history of the tea ceremony to be interesting, I am very sorry that you found the overall experience to be underwhelming. In an authentic Japanese tea ceremony, traditionally only one type of tea (matcha, usually), would be served. We admit that this information was not clear at the time of booking, and apologise for this.  Although the building is over a century old (a rarity in Japan), upon reflection I do understand that it looks much more ‘modern’ (both inside and out) than what you were perhaps led to expect at the time of booking. We will be re-writing the online description to ensure that there is no further misleading information regarding both the setting and the contents of the ceremony itself.  Again, I thank you for your review. Such feedback is very valuable in helping us improve our services.
