Taste the Swiss

Meeting place is not obvious. Call the office to get the exact location Excellent tasting experience at a Bakery and a private shop for cheese and chocolate tasting. Cheeses and chocolates are exceptional. Wine is not included in the price. Extra charge.

Tour Operator Bailed Out

ReyzaPaz_S, Jan 2026
The tour operator did not show up and provided no notice whatsoever. I waited over 30 minutes and attempted to contact them multiple times, with no response. This level of unreliability is unacceptable. I have requested a full refund and expect it to be honored. This was a very disappointing and unprofessional experience.

A must do in Basel

Angie_R, Dec 2025
Your guide makes or breaks a tour. Gina, our guide for this food tour was exceptional. She was knowledgeable, very sweet and funny. She gave us a bit of history as we walked from place to place to experience the delicious food. I highly recommend this tour.

Unequaled cheese and chocolate learning experience.

Donald_N, Dec 2025
Gina is an outstanding people person. Very knowledgeable and highly interactive. Enjoyed learning about her experience.

Tour old town and then hop on the tram to get to the combined cheese and chocolate shop for tasting of both. They were divine, and our guides were really great!

An Historical and Culinary Delight

Leslie_E, Dec 2025
Walking the cobblestone streets allows you to see 400-500 yr old shops up close. But learning about the process to make fantastic cheeses and chocolate truffles is mind blowing. Then eating the treasures is just perfection.

Joanne_G, Dec 2025
Good value tour combining pastry, cheese and chocolate tasting plus some key history of Basel and its architecture. We tasted some amazing local produce, some of which we decided to purchase, because it was really good. There was no pressure to buy. The only negative is that the directions to the meeting point for the tour in the Viator App are wrong and need to be fixed. It took us 15 mins to locate our group as we were in the wrong place on the other side of the marketplace.

Our guide Gina was fabulous-informative & fun. She geared the tour to the older & slower people. The cheese & chocolate person was also great.

A “must do” for first time visitors to Basel

We had a wonderful experience. Our guide was knowledgeable, personable, and innovative. It was obvious she wanted us to have a good experience.

Great guide. Great experience. Guide taught us about the city while we walked from tasting to tasting which were all excellent!

A great way to see the old city in one afternoon.

Becky_K, Oct 2025
Such a great way to get a feel and taste of the city! We thoroughly enjoyed our young guide- and he stuffed us full of tastings from each location. Would definitely recommend!

Shawn_W, Oct 2025
It was a great tour with Jean. He walked us through the farmers market area and talked about the history. We stopped and ate a local fruit. Then we went to a lovely bakery, a wonderful chocolate shop and then to a cheese store. The tastings were generous. Jean was friendly and knowledgeable and walked a good pace with us!

Wonderful walking tour

Jill_K, Sep 2025
This was a wonderful walking tour. Lots of interesting info about the city. The pastries, chocolate, and cheeses were amazing. Great value for the price. Remember to bring a water bottle.

Great walking food tour with lots of tastings

Hildy_D, Sep 2025
Jean was a terrific guide! I food was plenty! I saw some earlier reviews that complained about small portions but that is not the case now. I am so full!!! The cheese and chocolate so excellent. Don't pick the cheese danish though if you are expecting something sweet it is quite salty!!! Loved it. Walked 2 miles on a beautiful day though the city so delightful.

KarenW, Sep 2025
While our tour guide, Jean, was very nice - this felt more like a way to promote specific stores. We could have purchased chocolate, cheese and pastries at any of the wonderful shops in Basel instead of on the tour.

Ultimate Fail of a Tour

James_H, Sep 2025
Someone at Viator really needs to look into this tour. It’s a total ripoff. After they arbitrarily tries to change the rime on us, we agreed to another time. That was red flag number one. The guide met us at an alternate pickup point that was very inconvenient for us. We were then walked to a cheese store and served a few slivers of cheese and taken to a chocolate shop and given 4 pieces of chocolate. Doesn’t take a genius to do the math. We could’ve gone to those two stores on our own and down the same thing for over 100 euros less. We were never taken to the farmer’s market like the description said. The tour lasted about half of the time quoted. Since Viator doesn’t do refunds after completion of a tour, I have to now dispute this through my credit card. Stay away from this tour.

Poor Communication

Don_L, Aug 2025
Our tour was canceled by the provider. They wanted us to move to a day earlier which did not work for us. We told Viator that we could not go earlier and wanted to stay with our original time/day. Viator was supposed to contact the provider and according to the provider they did and were told they had a guide who was sick and could not do the tour. We were never told the tour was canceled and we showed up and waited and finally reached the provider for the bad news. Not happy about the poor communication.

Not worth it

William_G, Aug 2025
This is definitely not worth it. Basically, you walk around a shopping district. We went into three stores. My wife and I walked around the same area the day before and it didn’t cost us anything. We did get a couple of samples but certainly not enough to justify the cost of the tour. In addition, the tour was delayed by two hours and even then the tour guide showed up ten minutes late.

Response from Host, Aug 2025

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear the experience didn’t meet your expectations, especially after the positive remarks you shared with our guide during and after the tour. The start time was adjusted in advance—with your confirmation—to offer you a private tour experience instead of the small group which you paid. Our guide was at the meeting point a few minutes before the scheduled time, and as part of our protocol, a photo was sent confirming their arrival. While Basel’s Old Town is walkable, our tour is not just about the route—it’s about the insightful stories, curated tastings, and local connections you wouldn’t easily access otherwise. You visited a traditional bakery, tasted unique Swiss cheeses and bean-to-bar chocolate/truffels, and we adapted the tour by replacing the farmer’s market stop with a private experience given the timing. We always aim to offer meaningful, quality experiences and regret that this one didn’t fully resonate with you. Should you wish to share more, we’re always available at info@tours-of-switzerland.com.

Christina_P, Aug 2025
It never happened, our guide never showed up. We were there 20 minutes before and waited 30 minutes after. Called about 7 minutes past the start time and they told us to call the American number and American said call the Swiss number. Forced to ask for a refund, we will see how this process goes. We have done Viator tours many times before and have never had an issue until now.

Response from Host, Aug 2025

We’re very sorry to hear about your experience and completely understand your disappointment. Our guide was present at the designated meeting point, which is detailed in both the confirmation and in the message sent via Viator, including a link to our official meeting locations: https://tours-of-switzerland.com/meeting-locations/. Unfortunately, we did not receive any direct contact details and were unable to reach you outside the platform. We’re also sorry to hear about the confusion with the support numbers—we’ve followed up with Viator regarding this to improve coordination in the future. A refund request was supported from our side, and we trust Viator will complete the process promptly. Should you wish to experience the tour at another time or discuss this further, please don’t hesitate to reach out directly at info@tours-of-switzerland.com. We’d love the opportunity to make it right.

Tour guide cancelled tour due to limited support.

Mark_H, Jul 2025
Our tour guide decided to cancel our tour to help another tour guide who was sick. We were given two options. 1) Take the tour the tour a week later which was unacceptable because we would be in another country or 2) take a different tour which had only little bit in common with the original tour. We were offerred one bakery and more of a history tour. This was unacceptable. We did not understand why our tour was cancelled and not the other way around.

Response from Host, Jul 2025

Thank you for your feedback. We’re truly sorry for the inconvenience and frustration caused by the rescheduling of your tour. Due to an unexpected guide illness, we had to adjust our schedule on short notice. Tours were prioritized based on booking order, following a first-come, first-served policy to be as fair as possible to all guests. As your booking was made later, we had to offer alternatives. We offered to run your tour later the same day, but we understand this option didn’t fit your plans. We also proposed the closest available alternative, though we recognize it wasn’t a perfect match. We regret the disruption this caused and appreciate your understanding in these rare situations. Please feel free to contact us at info@tours-of-switzerland.com if you’d like to discuss further.

I was disappointed with tour, . Wanted to hear more info on Basel . Disappointed in guides cheese and chocolate shop. Would have loved to buy some chocolate to take home, but it wasn’t a store. He didn’t offer us water during cheese/chicolate tour and there was only one chair to sit down in store. When we went to bakery, had to sit on a window ledge to eat pastry. This tour was not worth the money . He was late for our tour(he did email and let us know) and left us after tour to get back to hotel. Wouldn’t recommend this tour to anyone . Debbie marx

Response from Host, Jul 2025

Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry the experience didn’t meet your expectations. This tour is a private tasting experience focused on Swiss cheese, bean-to-bar chocolate, and local pastries, with some sightseeing of one part of the Old town of tour. The tasting takes place in a privatised boutique—and the location does not belong to the guide personally. However, we understand your wish to purchase chocolate to take home though the heat didn't favor, our guide provided direction and showed along the way where it was possible. The tasting boutique is currently undergoing renovations to improve seating and overall comfort, and starting June 20, 2025, seating for up to 15 guests will be available, along with water during the tasting. The tour lasted the full 2 hours as scheduled, and before ending, the guide personally ensured you were safely on the tram that took you directly back to your hotel. We appreciate your feedback and are continually working to improve the experience for future guests. The tour lasted the full 2 hours as planned, and the guide made sure you were safely on the tram that led directly back to your hotel before concluding the tour. We also acknowledge your comfort concerns. Starting June 20, 2025, we will offer seating for up to 15 guests in the tasting room and provide water during the tasting for added comfort. Thank you again for your feedback—we’ll continue refining the experience to better match guest expectations.

Pamela_B, Jun 2025
It is not a typical food tour. It is also a private tour. We were taken to a shop owned by the tour guide. Very knowledgeable about cheeses and chocolate. Tastings of cheeses wonderful. Scant on the chocolate tasting though. Would suggest increase hospitality to offer chairs to sit and water to drink. Then we began our walking tour. Very informative of old part of Basel. Stopped at a bakery and selected a pastry. Probably the best I had tasted during our travels. But again no place to sit and eat our pastry.

Response from Host, Jul 2025

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. We’re happy you enjoyed the cheese tasting, chocolate insights, and the walking tour of Basel’s old town. We’re also glad you loved the pastry—it’s from one of Basel’s oldest bakeries and always a highlight for our guests. Just to share a bit more about the experience—the tasting is held in a privatised boutique which is not a owned by the guide. We'll look to add more to the chocolate offering as the weather gets cooler. That said, we appreciate your suggestions on comfort—starting June 20, 2025, we’ll offer seating for up to 15 guests and provide water during the tasting for a more relaxed visit. We’re also excited to add a stop at the local farmer’s market (available from July 15, 2025) to offer even more local flavor. Additionally, this experience will soon shift to a small-group format to keep it intimate while allowing more guests to join. Thank you again for your helpful feedback—we look forward to welcoming you back to Switzerland in the future!

To Long to Stand in the Cheese and Chocolate Shop

DianandJesd_P, Jun 2025
This tour was given by a very nice young man who took us to a pastry shop then to his store to taste cheeses and chocolate beans. He was very knowledgeable about where the cheeses came from and the flavors of each. A couple came in and spent quite a bit of time buying cheese in the middle of our tour. It was really a long time to stand without any chairs. We bought some cheese. We expected to be trying more chocolate pastries, not just chocolate beans with a couple of bites of chocolate. He did not have chocolate available to buy except one kid which we did not want. I hate to say this because he was so nice but I probably would not do this tour again.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for joining our tasting experience. We’re truly glad to hear you found our guide welcoming and knowledgeable—it means a lot to us, as we put great care into selecting local products and providing meaningful insights into Swiss cheese, chocolate, and pastries. That said, we sincerely appreciate your honest feedback. We apologize for the interruption during your tasting and the lack of seating, and we understand how this may have affected your comfort. We’re also sorry to hear the chocolate portion didn’t fully meet your expectations. While the focus is on bean-to-bar education with tasting of high-quality origins, we understand the desire for more variety in pastries and chocolate offerings and will take your comments into consideration for future improvements. We’ve already taken action based on this valuable feedback: starting 20th June 2025, the location will offer seating for up to 15 guests to ensure a more comfortable tasting experience. In addition, the store has officially begun producing its own bean-to-bar chocolate, and by 26th June 2025, they will have a broader selection of chocolates available for tasting and purchase. Your comments are incredibly helpful as we continue to improve, and we hope to welcome you back for a more refined and enjoyable experience in the future.

Poor service

Terrible co cancelled at the last minute 6.22 pm the nite before while I was enroute suprised Viatour recommended them

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Thank you for your review. We’re sorry to hear about your experience and would like to clarify what happened. The tour was not cancelled—we sent a message to inform you of an updated start time and attempted to reach you multiple times to ensure you had the correct information. Unfortunately, we did not receive any response, which made it difficult to assist further. That said, we understand how disappointing the situation must have felt and, as a gesture of goodwill, a full refund was issued. We always recommend checking messages and reaching out via our emergency contact (provided upon booking) in case of any uncertainty. We genuinely hope to welcome you on a future visit and provide the experience as intended.
