The imposing Citadella hilltop fortress was built by the Habsburgs back in 1854. The structure was used by the Germans and then the Soviets during the 20th century, while today it’s a popular tourist destination. Aside from its historical significance, the Citadella is well known for its panoramic views overlooking Budapest.

Yes, the Citadella is good for kids—younger children will enjoy burning off energy in the hilltop’s large open area, while older kids are likely to be drawn to the World War II bunker. If you’re visiting with toddlers, especially with strollers in tow, consider taking a taxi up Gellért Hill to avoid the climb.

Yes, the Citadella can be easily visited independently. Both buses and trams stop at the base of the hill, from where you can either walk up or take a taxi or rideshare. Book a guide if you’d like additional historical information.
