Yes, Melrose Abbey is definitely worth visiting. This partially ruined monastery is known for its connections to Robert the Bruce, and it’s believed his heart is buried here. On a standard visit, you can usually see the grounds, cloister, and museum, although some areas may be restricted due to conservation work.

It’s best to allow around an hour to explore Melrose Abbey. This gives you ample time to explore the ruins, abbey, grounds, and the on-site Commendator’s House Museum. You can also climb to the top of the bell tower to get beautiful views over Melrose.

Yes, Melrose Abbey is partially accessible to wheelchair users. The staff can advise you on the best path to take, and accompany you on an accessible route from the shop to a level entrance. Some parts of the historic building are not accessible though, as there are stone steps that lead into the abbey.

There are several other attractions near Melrose Abbey. These include Harmony Garden, which offers beautiful views of the abbey and Eildon Hills. There’s also the Trimontium Museum (home to a collection of Roman artefacts) and, if you go a little farther out, other historic Borders sites such as Dryburgh Abbey and Smailholm Tower.
