Our guide connected the past with the present ready to explain how the names of rooms, spaces, and sights are still alive from the ashes of Pompei. He asked questions and listened to answers as all of us were in awe of the preservation of history. He took the time and was very conscious of his audience to direct interest and his enthusiasm of the site to his audience, my wife felt it was her best tour and we have traveled a lot I loved how he weaved in and out of places away from the bulk of the other 5000 persons .

Practical points first - carry water, use the toilet before you start. 3 hours is a long time although our guide (Sonia) made it fly by. Hats and stout shoes essential. It is an amazing tour with lots of information - well worth having the guide otherwise it is just ruins. The guide really brought it to life.

The highlight of the tour of Pompeii was the introduction to the many recently opened buildings and the rooms in them. I went many years ago with my partner and it was a much smaller area open for tourists to visit. So, having Tony as a guide was invaluable to help us from getting lost in all the new space, especially with a family in tow. He answered all our questions with patience and authority. An unexpected highlight was the visit to Herculaneum beforehand, which was interesting and proved a useful contrast to Pompeii, smaller and less diverse (mostly houses of rich people). It put Pompeii in perspective and fed the imagination about what it was like in those days. Very happy to finish with the walk in the national park area up to the volcano and be able to look inside it. Fantastic view from the top over Naples and the Bay. A guided tour through Pompeii is crucial!! Our train was very delayed getting to Pompeii and we missed our scheduled tour. Our guide graciously got us into a later tour. We appreciated the flexibility and highly recommend Viator to all our friends. Pompeii was awesome - thank you!!

Pompeii is so expansive so this tour was a great way to see a good portion of the site with highlights. Our tour guide was well versed on Pompeii knowledge and was able to provide excellent history and stories in an engaging way. We spent a couple hours after the tour continuing to explore the site. My husband and I had a wonderful time learning some history, science, and archeology from our tour guide. He was very open to and knowledgeable about the questions we had. We would have loved to explore the whole space with our guide but when our tour was finished, he helped send us in the direction we were interested in continuing to explore. I would highly recommend!
