After Reservation, the tour starts at the rental point with the collection of e-bikes and the activation of virtual navigation, which accompanies along the way. The loop route measures about 32.2 km and has 597 m of positive altitude difference: medium level. It starts from Montepulciano and crosses some of the most recognizable landscapes of the Val d’Orcia, alternating paved roads, short stretches on a state road, paths and quiet side roads. The route passes near the Temple of San Biagio and continues through vineyards, olive groves, cultivated hills and panoramic points. The Temple of San Biagio was built by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, illustrious architect from Florence, between 1518 and 1545. Located in the middle of a sprawling meadow outside the town, the church is considered a masterpiece of 16th century Tuscan Renaissance architecture. The Church of the Madonna di San Biagio, with a Greek cross plan, central dome and semicircular apse, is flanked by two bell towers, of which only the one on the left was completed accomplished. It is entirely covered in travertine stone. Inside, the only wall with numerous decorative elements is the one corresponding to the main altar where there is a large marble dossal at the centre of which a fresco depicting the Madonna and Child and St. Francis is inserted. In front of the church is the harmonious building of the rectory, with two beautiful loggias, executed around the 1550.

What are the best tours in Montepulciano?

Are guided tours in Montepulciano worth it?

Yes, guided tours in Montepulciano are definitely worth it. You'll learn much more about the area's world-renowned wines and cuisine during expert-led wine tastings and cooking classes than you could on your own. Meanwhile, e-bike tours, winery visits, and horseback riding experiences provide access to Tuscany's postcard-perfect rolling hills and vineyards—even if you don't have a car.

Per one customer who booked the Wine Tour Ebike Experience, "Loved this so much! Favorite activity of the trip. Loved that it was self paced and self guided. Everyone at the bike shop was so helpful in getting us set up for our adventurous day. The winery reservations were made for us, so it was easy to make our wine stops along the route. Views while biking were unbeatable! Can't wait to go back and do it again!"

How much do Montepulciano tours cost?

Generally, the most affordable Montepulciano tours are group wine tastings, which start at US$30 for brief experiences under two hours. Longer wine-tasting excursions, such as e-bike tours that include lunch at a countryside vineyard, go for upwards of US$150. Cooking classes start at US$130.

A well-rated tour on the lower end of the price range is the Tasting Tour in One of The Most Beautiful Cellars in the World. For US$39, you'll explore a local cellar and taste six wines paired with snacks, but the experience only lasts for one hour and takes place in the center of Montepulciano, not in the countryside. The Wine Tour Ebike Experience is more expensive at US$190, but it is private and allows you to cycle through the rolling hills of Tuscany and visit two vineyards at your own pace, with wine tastings included.

What activities are included on Montepulciano tours?

Most Montepulciano tours showcase the region's remarkable red wine and Tuscan cuisine. That means you can cook fresh pasta in a local's home, go e-biking or horseback riding past picturesque vineyards, or enjoy a sommelier-led wine tasting in a historic cellar.

Consider an all-day or multi-day tour to pack in as many sights and activities as possible. For example, the Best of Tuscany: Full Day Private Tour to Val D'Orcia takes you to taste wines in Montepulciano, see Renaissance architecture in Pienza, drive through the scenic hills of the Val d'Orcia, and wander the medieval lanes of Montalcino.

How many days in Montepulciano is enough?

Many travelers visit Montepulciano on a full-day wine-tasting tour from Florence or Siena—ideal if you want to spend a few hours strolling through the medieval hill town and tasting wines at a couple of vineyards. For a more leisurely trip to Tuscany, stay in Montepulciano for two nights, which should be ample time to take a cooking class, tour a few wineries, and make an excursion to nearby towns such as Montalcino and Pienza.
