We love learning history

Josh was a walking teacher who loved sharing history in Munich. These are stories we need to see and hear.

Josh did a great job leading this tour of the darkest period of German history. I recommend it to anyone who’s interested in World War Two and the rise of fascism.

Never Again.

I don’t normally write negative reviews. I always think it’s the guide or myself having a bad day - the tour didn’t live up to my expectations or I had simply misunderstood the aim of the tour. There are always reasons & one must be aware of them. However, being kind, considerate & friendly is my most basic expectation on any tour guide, no matter what the content. However, this tour was probably one of the worst that I had done in all my decades of travelling. Josh was rude, over-bearing, laid down strict rules from the start (?), was paranoid about phone cameras & treated all of us like 6 year olds. I was humiliated & accused of recording the tour - something that I would never do, or even think of - simply because my phone was hanging on a lanyard around my neck. It was humiliating & he was very rude. Unfortunately, I stayed till the last 15 mins of the tour (I wish I had left earlier). I had had enough. I learnt nothing new - except Josh’s very loud berating voice, always talking about himself in the third person & made us all feel that we had helped with the rise of Naziism - even though no one had been born till decades after WW2 had ended. I can’t believe I actually paid money to be berated & humiliated. Was it so hard for Josh to be welcoming, friendly & informative? I have enjoyed 99% of the tours on Viator - this wasn’t one of them. What a bad experience for my last day in Munich. The reason I am writing this review is that - I was really looking forward to this tour & was bitterly dissapointed. I feel obliged to give everyone the option of thinking twice about the tour. I really wished someone had warned me - & I could have spent 2hrs 45 mins of my last day in Munich, in a much more pleasant environment. If I ever go back to Munich, I will stay clear of this company.

Third Reich Walking Tour of Munich

David_W, May 2026
It was a very sobering experience discovering how Hitler caused the death of countless millions during his regime. Our tour guide Josh had in depth knowledge of the political and economic circumstances that contributed towards Hitler’s rise to power since WW1 and the devastation caused to his home country Germany. Josh was a passionate, educated and articulate guide and I would strongly recommend him to anyone interested in knowing about the Third Reich regime.

Third Reich & WWII Walking Tour

This walking tour was fantastic! Our guide, Alex, was so knowledgeable about the history of the city and kept the tour entertaining. The tour was well paced and the additional pictures/information he had to show us at different locations was interesting and added to the tour. He took his time to talk and get to know everyone in the group as we were walking between stops. I highly recommend this tour and our tour guide, Alex!!

The tour guide Josh (not José 😉) provides a lot of information and shows quite some interesting spots in the city center. The pictures he shows add to this. He was very considerate of the group, answering questions and adjusting his tempo. Although, we are of the opinion that he could have been a bit more nuanced. Sometimes it was a bit too black and white.

Not Really a "Walking Tour"

Giorgio_M, Apr 2026
I have mixed feelings about this tour: on one hand, Josh, the guide, was clearly knowledgeable about WW2 and the rise of the 3rd Reich. On the other hand, it felt more like a lecture than a walking tour. It would have been perfectly fine if we had been sitting somewhere taking a lesson, but if I do a walking tour, I expect to walk around the city and see landmarks where significant things happened. Although, we didn't even visit the upstairs room at Hofbrauhaus! We rather spent half an hour in front of each of the memorial plaques in Marienplatz which we could have read by ourselves. All in all, the contents are good if you are interested about the topic, but I think some reorganisation is needed in order to better fulfill the "walking tour" format. As a last note, I also find it ridiculous having to tip the guide when you have already paid almost 30€!

Expert in History

Josh was absolutely engaging and provided more history and context than I have ever had on any other tour! He clearly is dedicated to sharing this history with others- highly recommend!!

Unbelievable Third Reich walking tour with Josh

Sam_C, Apr 2026
This was likely the best tour experience we've ever had. Josh was unbelievably organized and interesting. He is a performer. We liked that he was on time, ready to go, requested tickets, set out the guidelines (no phones while he was talking - so refreshing and needed!), and simply displayed a passion for every single part of the tour. He had pictures and audio and heartfelt stories that stirred the soul. He had everyone's attention for almost 3 hrs and he earns every bit of whatever he is paid. If you get a chance to have this guy, make sure to book this tour and tip him well. Thanks Josh, for an amazing time, a highlight of our time in Munich. We learned so much about this sad part of Munich's history and felt like we were walking through history with him. We will always remember your passion for and commitment to delivering your tour - thank you.

Excellent comprehensive Munich tour - LOTS of walking

Keith_F, Apr 2026
EXCELLENT tour of Munich focused on Hitler's building of the Nazi movement, but with so much more. Our guide Alex was a native Munich man who spoke perfect English. He easily handled any question or comment from our multinational group. He included information about past & current German culture, Munich's past and current arts scene, and many insider tidbits about the city and the country beyond its history with Hitler. With the group's encouragement, Alex even extended the tour for 30 minutes so we could visit more sites. Be forewarned though - this involves LOTS of walking! Alex provided occasional opportunities to sit along the way, but you essentially walk for 3+ hours (one restroom break). Also, the description states that the endpoint is different from the starting point, but it should be made clear that the endpoint is 1.2 miles away from the starting point. It was easy to get back to Marienplatz, but walking another mile was tiring after all the tour's walking. Very pleased with this tour - a great bargain for the price! Highly recommend!

History Told as it Happened. 100 Stars!

Eileen_W, Apr 2026
This tour starts right under the glockenspiel in Marienplatz, where the Munich Information Center is located. The guides came from the Information Centre right a little past 10, in time for the 10:10am start. Josh was our guide. Funny, intelligent, honest, he had a large book of pictures that he showed as we moved from location to location. He shared the significance of the buildings. He told the history in the most honest way, not leaving out the ugly or gut-wrenching but ensuring that we learned the ugliness and capability of humans to do evil, as well as to resist evil, from history. His touching tribute to the people who died, the soldiers and young men who were taken away from their mothers to fight and die in war, was such a powerful experience that I cannot describe. My family and I highly recommend walking this tour with Josh, choose a sunny day, cancel and re-schedule to a sunny day because it is more enjoyable with a lot more to see compared to rainy walks. This was probably our best tour, and my only regret was, we did not reschedule it as one of the earlier tours in our spring break week, but rather the last tour on our packing and rest day. 100 stars.

Josh may be a time traveler ♥️

Cybill_S, Apr 2026
I was admittedly both excited and also dreading this tour, given the content I knew it would contain. In spite of this, Josh was a magnanimous tour guide, incredibly knowledgeable, and very engaging. I suspect he himself may be a time traveler, given his expansive intelligence around this tragic topic and his incredible book of photos and propaganda. He made space for the heaviness of the conversation and conveyed information with insight, remorse, and applicable context around the city, citing multiple landmarks and relevant motifs all over Munich. While I typically only book tours on vacation that contain levity and light entertainment, I’m grateful for the knowledge perspective Josh provided while also showing the beauty and tenacity of Germany.

Amazing portrayal of the deep and complex history, best walking tour!

If you are interested in the history around WW2 then this is the tour for you. We did it on our first morning in Munich so it was a great way to get our bearings. Josh was extremely knowledgeable and an excellent guide.

Tour given with real heart and emotion by Josh…

Edmund_S, Mar 2026
This tour was everything I was hoping it would be and more. Josh was very well educated on the impact this period in history had on the city and the people who were there. You will see a lot of incredibly relevant places that help give you a better understanding of what a significant tragedy this was.

Must do Third Reich tour

Andrew_D, Feb 2026
Very in-depth look at the Third Reich and Munich. Takes you to all the places of interest and keeps you intrigued throughout. Michael the guide is full of information and his knowledge is second to none. I recommend this tour for anyone who has an interest in this subject and wanting to learn more about the start of Hitler and the rise of the Nazi Party. Two things to note…… Take a drink and snack as there is little time to rest and have a break. Maybe should introduce this. The tour starts in Munich (Marienplatz) itself when personally it should be from Konigsplace then back to Marienplatz…?

Phenomenal Walking Tour

Melissa_G, Jan 2026
Absolutely worth every penny and more. Our guide was named Alex, and you could not good for a more knowledgeable and personable guide. We were treated to the subject matter specific to the tour as well as so much of the rich history of the area. The tour includes at least six locations and covers a lot of events, probably a bit overwhelming for a "beginner" in WWII history or walking tours. I am confident that a beginner could enjoy still, as Alex welcomed questions and dialogue throughout the morning. Alex also pointed out interesting places to visit along the way, suggestion landmarks and museums we could add to our itineraries. My partner and I agreed that Alex handled the heavy subject matter and some tragic events really well. He used honest, factual information and presented details with sensitivity without shying away from the hard truths. He allowed moments for the group to process what we had heard quietly and stand in remembrance and then encouraged discussion and reflection. After the tour Alex was helpful in giving directions and suggestions for the reminder of our stay, which is valuable coming from a local when you are completely unfamiliar with the area! Expert, professional delivery of information and a thorough tour- Tons packed into 3 hours! I would actually happily take this tour a second time on my next visit to absorb more and enjoy another morning in the fresh air.
