Itineraries for Your Trip to Lucerne
2 Days in Lucerne for First Timers
Lucerne has always held a magical spot in my imagination, even before I made my first visit to the Swiss city. Growing up, my grandmother had a wooden sculpture of the city’s most famous attraction: the Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal). This rock-hewn sculpture depicts a dying lion, a spear in his side, and while most kids might find it creepy, I found it to be moving in its tragedy. I ended up visiting, and revisiting, Lucerne over the years, not just to say “hi” to my favorite statue, but also to just soak up the beauty of this lovely lakefront city. Here’s how I’d suggest spending two days in Lucerne.
If you only have time for one thing, make it the Lion Monument.
Bring a jacket or coat, even if you visit during the summer. You never know when you might need it.
Spend your first morning in Lucerne getting acquainted with the city, visiting Old Town highlights on a walking tour. Take a stroll across the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke), a long covered bridge originally built in the 14th century. Take your time crossing—the bridge’s walls are adorned with beautiful panels that were painted in the 17th century.
Switzerland is known for cheese and chocolate. Get a taste for both of these beloved treats in the afternoon. Don't just rush to your nearest supermarket to stock up on cheese and chocolate. Instead, join a food tour and let your guide teach you all about the local chocolate and cheese industries while you taste.
On your second morning in Lucerne, head south to Engelberg, from where you can catch a cable car up to Mt. Titlis, a beautiful introduction to the Swiss Alps. Brave the Titlis Cliff Walk, a high-altitude suspension bridge—go hiking, or just take in the views before returning to Lucerne.

In the afternoon, reach new heights a different way: on a tandem paraglide ride. You don't need any experience to engage in this thrilling adventure. Instead, you'll be cinched up to your instructor who will do all the navigating so that you can take in views of the valleys and peaks below.
Wrap up your Lucerne trip with an evening cruise on Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee). Take in views of the water and surrounding buildings while your captain leads your boat along the lake. Some cruises even enjoy extra perks, such as Wi-Fi and audio tour apps that you can access from your smartphone.
