Itineraries for Your Trip to Geneva
1 Day in Geneva for First Timers
As a resident of Switzerland’s German-speaking region, Geneva has always felt like an exotic escape—a cosmopolitan city with a unique blend of Swiss precision and French flair. Whether it’s a stroll around its vibrant neighborhoods, a visit to its historic landmarks, or a dive into its scientific marvels, Geneva never fails to impress visitors. One of my go-to weekend plans includes a Saturday spent exploring the city’s Old Town and famous lake, followed by a Sunday tour of CERN or an excursion to Glacier 3000. But for first-timers with just one day in Geneva, a carefully planned itinerary is a must. Here’s mine, offering a glimpse of Geneva’s fascinating past and modern vibrance, with tips for a more local perspective, too.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a tour of Geneva’s Old Town, including to St. Peter’s Cathedral towers.
Rain is a common occurrence in Geneva, so bring a rain jacket and take advantage of indoor tours.
Geneva is a city of contrasts: on one side a modern global hub for diplomacy, science, and business, while on the other, is a traditional Swiss town steeped in Reformation history. Dedicate your morning to gaining the full overview, hitting the city’s key landmarks, like the Jet d’Eau, Bastions Park’s Reformation Wall, and St. Peter’s Cathedral. While the Old Town is easy to explore on foot, tours with transportation help reach farther-flung sights, like the Palais des Nations.
After lunch, treat yourself to a chocolate dessert, visiting Geneva’s artisan stores to learn more about Switzerland’s famous export. Local chocolatiers like Martel, Favarger, and Guillaume Bichet serve delicious creations—perfect as gifts or indulgent pick-me-ups, while out-of-town factories like Maison Callier make for popular day trips. Some city tours also include a behind-the-scenes look at the chocolate-making process and its rich history in Switzerland. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in Geneva’s Old Town, going off the beaten track for an insider's perspective of the city’s coffee and confectionery culture.
After a busy day, unwind with a sunset cruise on Lake Geneva. Rest weary feet and enjoy an aperitif as you soak up your last sights of the city and surrounding mountains—on clear days, you’ll even see Mont Blanc. For dinner, savor a classic Swiss fondue at Café du Soleil or tuck into fresh, locally sourced dishes at Bistro de Halles de Rive, a 10-minute walk from the pier.
