3 Days in Chania for First Timers

Curated by Lori Zainowho visits this Greek island regularly.

Chania, a town (and region) located on Crete’s western side, is arguably one of the most beautiful destinations on the Greek island. While I could easily spend ages wandering the bougainvillea-lined streets and popping into cute boutiques, restaurants, and coffee shops of Chania's Old Town, heading farther afield is well worth it. I like to stay in the town of Chania, then take excursions and day trips throughout the region—and beyond—to explore some of Crete’s top beaches, gorges, and cultural attractions. If you only have three days in Chania, here are my recommendations of what you should see and do.

Chania is hot and sunny for most of the year, so bring sunblock and a hat.

If you only have time for one thing, lounge on the pink-hued sands of Elafonisi Beach, one of the best beaches on Crete.

Day 1

Start your 3-day trip in Chania’s Old Town, making time to stoll the enchanting cobblestone streets with colorful buildings. Be sure to wander out to the Old Venetian Harbor to check out the Venetian Lighthouse, which dates back to the 16th century. You can combine a full-day or half-day walking tour with stops to enjoy drinks and light bites.

Alternatively, take a day trip to southwestern Crete’s Samaria Gorge National Park, home to Samaria Gorge, a rocky canyon you can trek from top to bottom. It’s a must-see on many trips to Greece.

Day 2

Crete is one of the oldest winemaking islands in the world, so experiencing its delicious Greek wines via a wine tour is a must. On day two, plan to sample vidiano, a Cretan white variety that resembles a buttery chardonnay.

Pair your wine tasting with local specialties, such as kalitsounia (savory or sweet Cretan-style pies), ntakos (traditional Greek cheese bread), and fresh tzatziki (yogurt sauce). Or learn how to make classic dishes yourself during a traditional Cretan cooking class with a local family.

Day 3

You can’t leave Chania without visiting its stunning beaches and villages. Elafonisi is one of the most famous, known for its pink-tinged sand, while Balos Beach and Lagoon offers a white sandy cove with clear, turquoise water. Both are often deemed “the most beautiful in the world” on best beaches lists. Air-conditioned bus transport makes trip planning easier.

To see a more local side of the region, grab a rental car or opt for an organized day tour to some of Chania’s most charming hilltop or cliffside villages often swathed in foliage, such as Vryses, Fres, and Emprosneros.
