Itineraries for Your Trip to Aswan
1 Day in Aswan for First Timers
In a country where scenery usually takes a back seat to epic ancient sites, Aswan comes as a surprise. On my first-ever trip to Egypt, I was as struck by the city’s gentle landscapes as much as its archaeological sites, including Philae Temple. Its Nile River waters and green islands—all backed by butter-yellow desert ridges—lent it a prettiness absent in Luxor and Cairo. I immediately added it to my ‘perfect-for-chilling’ bucket list: Somewhere to loll beside a river-view pool and enjoy the backdrop free from the crowds. Ergo, if you’re ever in Egypt deliberating on how to spend one day in Aswan, here’s how to cover its highlights while simultaneously admiring its lovely setting.
If you’re here between October and March, don’t get caught out by Aswan’s cool temperatures in the early morning and evening: pack a light jacket or layers.
If you only have time for one thing, take a twilight felucca sailboat trip on the Nile.
Take advantage of Egypt’s milder morning temperatures to check off the must-see Aswan attractions. Make things easy by booking an organized sightseeing excursion: most are private tours that wrap before the afternoon heat. Start at the photogenic island-set ruins of Philae Temple before viewing the Aswan High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk—an enormous, half-hewn stone pillar still embedded in the quarry where stonemasons abandoned it an estimated 3,500 years ago. Alternatively, you may prefer the rewarding (but long) road trip to Abu Simbel, where two massive temples stare over Lake Nasser—relics of ancient Egypt.
If it’s your first time in Aswan, the city’s often-fierce afternoon sun demands a slower pace. Drink in the cooler air of the Nile and its islands on boat rides that waft past palm-fringed Elephantine Island and the desert ridges on the west bank. Some cruises dock at the luxuriant Aswan Botanical Garden (I found its subtropical walkways a blessed relief from the sun) while many visit Nile-side Nubian Villages. Step ashore to discover their bright, mudbrick houses, sip tea with the locals, and immerse yourself in traditional Nubian culture.
After a restorative dinner, wind down the day as dusk falls. No stay in Aswan is complete without hopping on an evening felucca river cruise: It’s perfect for soaking up tranquil, sunset views of the Nile. Later, head for the Philae Temple light show on a hassle-free ticket-and-transfer package, and admire its floodlit kiosks and halls as you uncover its history. Alternatively, if you’re feeling energetic, book a desert sandboarding foray or a horse-and-carriage ride to squeeze every drop from your 1-day Aswan itinerary.
