Killing Field and Genocide Museum private haft day Tour

Genocide Museum (S-21 )served as the central hub of a vast prison system throughout the country and was used throughout the period as a secret facility for the detention, interrogation, torture and extermination of those deemed “political enemies” of the regime. Due to a policy of guilt-by-association, at times whole families were detained at the center. Very few inmates were released out of the prison during the years 1975 and 1979. Only 12 former inmates survived the opening of S-21 when Phnom Penh was liberated. Four of them were children. Killing Field between 1975 and 1979 by the Khmer Rouge in perpetrating the Cambodian genocide. Situated about 17 kilometres (11 mi) south of the city centre, it was attached to the Tuol Sleng detention centre. The bodies of 8,895 victims were exhumed from the site after the fall of the khmere Rouge, who would have been executed there—typically with pickaxes to conserve bullets—before being buried in mass graves.

The pickup was convenient and in an air conditioned van. The tour guide Nin was very knowledgeable, but more notably she was extremely helpful when I experienced symptoms of heat exhaustion, bringing water and finding me air conditioning. (Be advised this tour is entirely open air with some shade.)

Educational and emotional tour of two prime sites

The Tour provides plenty of time at both the Killing Fields and Genocide Prison. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and able to provide personal reflection from his own families suffering. Our driver DaRa couldn’t have been more helpful with regular bottles of cold water. Very educational, emotional and good value. Take cash for the entrance fees.

Sum Cheath was our guide on the tour and he was great. Communication before the tour on pick up time and dress code. There are a few sights to...

There are a few sights to see in PP and this 4-hour tour does a comprehensive job in hitting each. It will be challenging at times given the genocide but so important to understand to avoid such a brutal tragedy in the future. A couple tips: you will be removing your shoes at some sights so you may want to wear socks and if you use a tuk-tuk for the tour, you may want to bring a mask due to the heavy pollution.
