Twin Lakes Burera & Ruhondo – Rwanda’s Most Underrated Escape If you want “real Rwanda” with volcano views, calm water, and zero crowds, this is it. The Twin Lakes sit at the base of the Virungas, just 30 min from Musanze and 3 hours from Kigali. Here’s what makes you to add in trip: The View Hits Different Deep blue lakes surrounded by steep, terraced hills and the Virunga volcanoes. On a clear morning the water mirrors the mountains perfectly. It’s quiet, green, and feels untouched. Photographers call it one of Rwanda’s best landscapes. Boat rides & kayaking – Glide across Lake Ruhondo past tiny islands and fishing villages. You’ll see kingfishers, herons, and fish eagles up close. Bird watching – The lakes are a RAMSAR wetland site. Spot rare birds like the Rwenzori turaco and crowned crane. Cultural experiences – Join local fishermen using traditional canoes, try cow-milking, visit villages, and watch traditional dance. Hiking & cycling
