Blue Lake Grotto (Gruta do Lago Azul)
The Blue Lake Grotto is one of Bonito’s most interesting and scenic outdoor attractions.
The exact depth of the vast lake is still a mystery—with research divers only able to reach a depth of 285 feet (87 meters). The lake is thought to be fed by an underground river yet to be located.
To protect the fragile ecosystem, visitors can only enter the cave as part of a small-group tour with a guide from the municipality of Bonito. Groups are staggered throughout the day to prevent overcrowding.
Wear comfortable, rubber-soled shoes, and bring insect repellent, sunscreen (there is a small hike to the cave), a camera, water, and snacks.
The grotto is not wheelchair or stroller accessible. There are many stairs and a hike through the jungle, so a reasonable fitness level is required.
Most tours do not include transportation. This is normal in Bonito.
There is an on-site bar, restroom, and souvenir shop. Cash is recommended.
