Things to do in  Aosta

Rome by way of the Alps

Tucked in a northwest pocket of Italy near France is the bilingual mountain town of Aosta. Sat on the flat valley floor with peaks all around, the town is, for many visitors, synonymous with the neighboring ski resort town of Pila, which you can access via gondola from Aosta. But there’s more to Aosta than snow sports and hiking. The slew of Roman relics around its tiny Old Town hark back millennia and add sightseeing and history to Aosta’s list of things to do.

When to visit

If you just plan to see Aosta’s Old Town, it’s pleasant to visit year-round. But if you want to make the most of the surrounding Aosta Valley countryside and its opportunities for outdoor adventure, visit when the lifts are open in winter and summer. For winter visitors, the most snow-sure time to visit is between January and March; while for summer visitors, July through to early September are the most ideal months.

Getting around

Aosta Old Town is small and easy to explore on foot. It’s also within walking distance of the Aosta-Pila Télécabine (the Pila Gondola base station) and the Aosta train station. It is possible to use Aosta as a base for trips via public transport to places such as Gran Paradiso National Park, the Fort of Bard, and Courmayeur, but a car offers greater freedom. Neither rideshares nor taxis are widely available.

Traveler tips

Gran Paradiso Parco Nazionale is Italy’s oldest national park and is within easy day trip distance from Aosta by car or public bus. This huge area of wilderness offers hiking, biking, and canyoning, along with cross-country skiing in the winter. Grab a Gran Paradiso tourist map to work out the trails and head to Cognes for easy access to trailheads, eateries, and a visitor center.
