What a wonderful tour.
Ben was a superb guide with added history facts along the way.
The food we sampled along the way was very tasty and definitely not small.
You won’t be disappointed if you choose to book.
Value for money

Fantastic experience.
Ben is very knowledgeable about food and York and we had a great afternoon.
Fantastic variety of quality independent produce!
Larry_B, Feb 2026
Excellent tour of independent food/drink businesses in York city centre with just the right mix of York history thrown in to the mix. Ben, our guide, took us through an amazing tasting experience of cheese, fish & chips, gin, chocolate, burritos, macarons, tapas, sherry and sticky toffee pudding with beer. All of which in really interesting and historic buildings.
If you like food and drink and history then this is the tour for you. Come hungry though!

Fun delicious food and history of the area. Had an enjoyable time. Ben the guide was helpful. Had a great group with plenty of chatter and laughs along the way.

Ben met our small group promptly, and looked after us brilliantly for the next three hours. He took us to a wide variety of eateries, all delicious, all fun, and a wonderful introduction to what York has to offer. He also had a wide ranging knowledge of the fascinating history of York. He told us that he was a judge for the Great Taste awards, and this possibly informs his enthusiasm and knowledge of food. I would warmly recommend this tour/ experience. We have already booked to return to York to explore everything more, feeling more confident after such a fun introduction to this beautiful, friendly place.
Many thanks Ben

Ben is a wonderful host!
He knows York well, and knows the food business even better.
We had a fabulous time and would recommend this food walking tour to everyone!

What a great first tour we had in York! Ben was a lovely host and knows his local food spots. He was knowledgeable about not only the places we visited, but we also walked away with a week’s worth of recs for places to eat during our five-day stay. And, those places did not disappoint. Definitely book a tour with Ben and do it at the beginning of your trip. You will get a good sense of York’s layout for future navigation and will have lots of yummy places to visit after.

York on a fork is a great tour of history, navigation and cuisine. It Easy to walk to course at any age. Ben was personable and locally knowledgable. Each food location was better than expected. The combination of food and drinks were excellent.

We were pleasantly surprised from the start, when Ben met with us, introduced himself and then announced that, as another group had had to cancel, we had him all to ourselves 😁.
Starting with a visit to a cheese shop, we progressed through the City of York sampling many different, and delicious, types of food and drink. This was accompanied by a liberal sprinkling of nuggets of history and legends of York from the very knowledgeable and affable Ben.
Without hesitation I would recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys food, walking and/or history 👍

Excellent choice for food tasting
The host was very engaging and interesting

This was outstanding! An excellent guide with stacks of info and visiting 7 venues to enjoy local food and drink. The added bonus is that it is small groups and that you tend to sit with different people and get to know them! It costs about £70, but that represents excellent value. I would do it again, although first time will obviously be best, unless he varies the venues. If I could I would award 10 stars!

We loved all the stories Ben told and the food he introduced us to. He was great with the kids! Thanks for the best start to our visit to York.

My husband and I were disappointed with the "leadership". The guide didn't really feel like showing us the city and bringing us closer. He would only ever take us to the eating stations quickly and then not stay at the table with us, but would jump up again and again, walk away, come back and leave. That brought a lot of unrest and we didn't feel comfortable at all. We expected a relaxed atmosphere with food and stories about York. That didn't happen at all. The food we were allowed to taste was fine but not spectacular. The Fish&Chips restaurant was rather uncomfortable. The service not particularly friendly. Again, the restless Führer, who did not want to stay to tell us something.
Even if we went through the city together, he didn't have much to say about York. I then tried to get a conversation going about York by asking for the ghosts of the city and the special meaning of the cats. Unfortunately, this did not succeed, as he answered only monosyllabically and was obviously not interested in the topics or not informed. He talked more about himself than about York. I found that very disappointing. The tour was then also over an hour earlier than announced, because he really didn’t feel like it and said we had just been faster. That was just because he didn't tell us anything and just fobbed us off quickly, literally. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this experience.

Hello, firstly let me apologise that you clearly didn’t enjoy your experience. I put a lot of effort into trying to offer a tour that can be enjoyed by a broad spectrum of people as is reflected by the positivity of every other review. I will of course reflect on your comments though and am genuinely upset and sorry that you did not enjoy yourselves. I do need, however, to respond to some of the comments you make.
It’s necessary to leave tour groups in venues to make sure that food is being prepared on schedule and to pay the venues for their dishes. I also find generally that people prefer to be left alone for a few minutes when they start eating, the natural pause giving time for me to return to the party and talk about the food. On the date of your tour, you were the only 2 people, so there was naturally less opportunity for organic conversation across a party. Perhaps this is also why you felt I talked about myself too much, which is something I shall touch on. I’ll pass your comments on the comfort of the fish & chip restaurant to the owners; I must say it’s not something I agree with.
I do take exception to your assertion that I talked more about myself than York and that I didn’t have much to say about the city. I told you about the history of York Walls and relation to the Roman site and William Etty as well as their restoration and modern alterations; York’s Snickleways; The Minster and its stonemasons; Guy Fawkes; The Shambles and its history as a street of butchers as well as Margaret Clitherow; Shambles Food Court; Sir Thomas Herbert’s house; the history of chocolate in York and the modern production in York Cocoa Works; Cliffords Tower & the Pogrom; The Eye of York and the Castle Museum/Jail; York Power Station; The Banana Warehouse; Spark York; Leetham’s Flour Mill/Rowntree Wharf; The Merchant Adventurers Hall & its relation to Sir Thomas Herbert; buildings on Fossgate/Walmgate; Ellerker’s Rope Merchant and more. I don’t know much about the ghosts of York but generally suggest people join Mad Alice’s excellent Bloody Tour of York for more on this. Similarly I don’t know much about the cats of York, I will read more on this.
I note that you have left this review in your first language and that I delivered the tour in a second language for you. I actually commented to my wife afterwards that I’d tried hard to moderate my language to ensure you understood. I was concerned about this because when we left the chocolate factory, you asked if the chocolate we tried had been produced there even after I’d spoken at some length about how this was the only remaining bean-to-bar chocolate production within York City Walls, I had shown you the beans and the production facility and even given you cocoa nibs to sample along with several examples of the chocolate produced there.
The tour did finish early, but not by over an hour. The length of it is dictated to a large extent by the pace at which guests eat and walk and I always make sure to ask people if they’re ready to leave an establishment before we move on. We visited eight businesses and ate or drank at all of them. If we had managed that in two hours, we would have had 15 minutes per venue not even accounting for walking between them or stopping to talk about York between them.
Again I’m genuinely sorry that you didn’t enjoy yourselves. You commented that you loved pubs and British pub culture. If you ever find yourself back in York, I’ll very happily take you around a few of my favourites and introduce you to another side of the city. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in this wonderful city.
