Great day trip, very full itinerary including boat across Lake Manapouri, coach across Wilmot Pass and then 2.5 hours boat trip on Doubtful Sound. The whole day was very well organised and great fun. The views on all 3 parts of the trip are spectacular.

Doubtful Sound was wonderful. The boat commentary was detailed and we had a great day. We didn’t bring any lunch with us and I would do that if going again. The bus driver was also very knowledgeable on the area, stopping for photo spots. All combined for an excellent day

It was a very remote location to enjoy the Fiordlands and getting there was enjoyable. The one thing I didn't expect was 130 people on the boat. The adds made it appear smaller, more boutique with solitude and silence. The fiord and Lake Te Anau were beautiful, but you will be sharing it with 120 of your closest friends. The staff and bus drivers were very polite and professional. I would recommend, but know you will be sharing with quite a few more people than you might think.

Its a great experience, very friendly staff on the boats and great scenery of course. Tony our bus driver for the trip over the pass had us all laughing and the the stops on the way were great.

Peaceful adventure

Scenic journeys to the sound. Staff are friendly and helpful. We had a very wet day but the waterfalls made up for it!

The scenery was stunning and the guides were informative and funny. We lucked out with a dry day but still got to see waterfalls. We also saw seals, an albatross who soared over our host several times and a pod of dolphins who entertained us by doing some jumps.

Not to be missed.

Simply stunning despite the low cloud hiding much of the scenery, but giving it a sombre mood. Then the sun came out and the cloud mostly disappeared. Stunning views. The boat across Lake Manipouri was a terrific taster and start to the day. The bus drivers and their commentary were very informative and they were very friendly. The steady sailing along the Sound was amazing with the bonus of the seals at the end. All in all a superb day out and terrific value for money given that it is a 7 hour round trop.

Stunning Beauty Throughout delived with professional aplomb

RealNZ take care of each and every traveller from start to finish to ensure you have the best experience possible. From booking in at the office they give you a boarding pass which get's you on the boat. A quick hour across Lake Manapouri with some commentary about the lake and the local area you are deposited at the Manapouri Hydro Power plant (sounds industrial but most is inside the mountain). At the visitor center there is information concerning the plant, including a model of how the plant works. Outside this center you are collected by coach and taken across the Wilmot Pass which is a gravel road specifically built for the construction of the hydro power station. This road has some of the most scenic views and steepest gradients (non-sealed) that can be handled by a 41 seater coach. The coach driver also gives a whitty commentary to make the time fly by. You arrive at the Deep Cove Cruise Terminal and immediately embark the vessel that will take you on a tour of Doubtful Sound. The cruise also contains commentary and takes you along the Sound to the open sea (Tasman Sea) as far as the Shelter Islands. There you will be introduced to the local marine life and start back to the Terminal. However, the return trip also includes an excursion to the three arms that exist (First, Crooked and Hall) and there was a very etheric experience in the final arm when the captain switched everything off in the boat, the visitors were asked to remain quiet and enjoyed the 'Sound of Silence'. From there it was a return to the Terminal, back over the pass on a coach and return trip across Lake Manapouri. I have to say on my trip the weather did not really cooperate with the odd spill of rain and clouds accompanying throughout. But the scenery was stunning and made the 7 hour trip totally worthwhile. If I had only one qualm, it would be the lack of parking spaces in Manapouri, particularly if you are on the later sailing. I saw lots of people circulating around close to leaving time and I'm sure it just created stress that they didn't need. Signs to overflow parking would have been a great benefit.

A great boat and bus trip

A great trip into the Doubtful Sound. Lots of waterfalls, (we did have a rainy day so there are more than normal) Lots of interesting information, drinks and good backs available at the starting point and on board. The bus across the middle was fun with a great guide

This was a lovely excursion to visit Doubtful Sound. It’s really quite spectacular. Based on my experience I would recommend Milford Sound over Doubtful. From a solo traveler perspective, it was not so great with the coach ride. Tourists can be pretty aggressive with queues and seats. Hard to get good spots without appearing like the bad person as a solo traveler. Note there are about 140 people on the excursion.

It's not an excursion, it's an experience

Peter_G, Mar 2026
There's so much to this trip — it's like three in one. First, you have the lovely boat ride through Lake Manapouri. Then we got off the boat and transferred to three luxury coach buses to travel on an unpaved road over the mountain through Wilmot Pass. It's a 50-minute trip through the pass (with entertaining commentary and a few stops for photos). Then it's a transfer to another lovely boat (indoor seating on multiple levels, cafe, restrooms, etc., plus commentary, and, for a delicious moment... silence) in Doubtful Sound. After reaching the Tasman Sea, we return and do the whole trip in reverse. Back by around 5 pm. It was rainy. And foggy. And cloudy. Apparently, a normal day for Doubtful Sound, and while you might think that a sunny day would be better, it's actually so eerily beautiful in the clouds and fog, and the rain creates waterfalls. Everywhere. I'm a huge waterfall fanatic, and I didn't even take pictures of all of them; there were so many. An amazing day.

Three experiences in one Tour

Leanne_J, Mar 2026
We took the 7.30am tour from Manapouri where we had stayed overnight, just a 5min drive to marina. We saw the sun rise and mist over Lake Manapouri on the first boat. After that the coach through the forest was amazing with an exceptional dialogue from Alan. Then came Doubtful Sound in all its glory. The rain the day before gave us more waterfalls and we were given the sound of silence as well, no boat engine, no people talking or walking absolutely nothing, made me smile. We loved this tour for the 3 different experiences and the staff made it all the more sweet.

Horrible First Encounter

Christopher_J, Mar 2026
The sound is beautiful and the company did a very good job once we were underway but my first experience of the company was extremely disappointing as I was scolded by an 18 year old. We follow Viator's instructions and the information that had been sent to us, arriving at the time that our email had recommended. However, the parking lot was already full. It was dark (we were the first trip of the day) and ran inside to ask the attendant a question. She scolded us for being late. We said, "But we are still early based on what the email communication said." She replied sharply to us, "It's Viator's fault. They don't update their site. You should have been here earlier." It took a while to recover from such a stressful and demeaning first encounter. If there is another company taking trips to Doubtful Sound, I would choose them. Unfortunately, I do not think there is one. Also, the information at Viator was incorrect in terms of on board purchases, etc. We did not plan well because information was incorrect. So whether it was Viator's fault or RealNZ's fault. I would have like better communication. And I would think RealNZ would want to make sure everything is communicated correctly.

An absolute must! A very interesting, scenic, and superbly organized trip. The crossing of Lake Manapouri is by boat, followed by a bus ride over Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove, and then a boat trip through Doubtful Sound.

It was an exciting experience with beautiful scenery. The boat ride over lake manapouri than the bus ride and the highlight Doubtful sound.

Amazing Doubtful Sound!

merrymsmouse, Mar 2026
It is an amazing experience that is unforgettable! The price was extremely reasonable for an all day adventure! It ran very smoothly and our transfers ran on time like clockwork! The boats were spacious & clean - not overcrowded, which I was very happy to see! The busses were driven by knowledgeable drivers with excellent history & commentary! I would HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience New Zealand as it was 100 million years ago!

Madeleine_C, Mar 2026
Nice trip not what I'd call amazing or breathtaking. 1st boat over was super snazzy and nice, boat back was awful. So so loud, with a high pitch ring the whole time, was not pleasant. The "middle" boat ride in the sound was really nice, saw dolphins and seals which was awesome and the views were lovely. To be honest, the views from the bus drive in the middle were the best, by far... was a big day for not a lot unfortunately. Did Milford sound the day before, and again saw dolphins and seals... Trip was nice and I wouldn't say dont do it, but dont have it to high on ypur list either

Great Day Trip

Robert_N, Mar 2026
Excellent day ..well organised.. got to see not only Doubtful Sound but also Lake Manapouri.. informative commentary throughout

Natural wonder

Fiona_C, Mar 2026
Stunning scenery, great commentary, so peaceful, a must for everyone who visits the area, definitely recommend

Great trip and amazing views

Martin_K, Feb 2026
The whole trip was excellent. Check in was easy and plenty of room on the boat to sit or wander outside. Good commentary on the coach from a great driver. Views on the Sound were amazing and it was so quiet and peaceful.

A great way to discover a small part of the vast area of Fijordland National Park.

Christine_W, Feb 2026
A great way to discover a small part of the vast area of Fijordland National Park. Guides on both boats and the coach were friendly and very knowledgeable. Learnt about the geography, geology, flora and fauna of this incredible area. Highly recommend anyone to take this trip

Beautiful boat ride...

Beautiful boat ride across Lake Manapouri. Bus ride was informative and scenic. Cruise on Doubtful Sound was relaxing and beautiful.

Truly a unique experience!

shomisaraj, Feb 2026
We had a great day with RealNZ. Pretty remarkable that we went on a boat then bus then boat and back the same way without a hitch and on time! The guides were informative and the day was full of multiple falls infil swing due to the light rain since the night before This is one of the few places you want it to rain before or during your journey here!

Beautiful experience!

Rachel_D, Feb 2026
Outstanding day! It was cloudy when we left Manapouri but cleared into a beautiful clear day by the time we reached Doubtful Sound. All staff were helpful & informative & it was a beautiful experience. Guess a lot will depend on the weather you get though

The other sound

Shane_D, Feb 2026
Not overcrowded. This is the other sound. Spectacular scenery. The bus drivers were very informative and knowledgeable.
