Even though we'd never seen the movies - we really enjoyed this movie set. It's set in a beautiful area of the country and is so charming. I wanted to see something I'd never see anywhere else.... and this was it! Easy to find the driver - clean bus - all on time. Just excellent!

    Amazing day. Great communication from the tour operator. When one of our party lost their cell phone on the bus Ian and our driver Gary went above and beyond to locate the phone and drive it back to the meeting point. Highly recommend this tour at half the cost of the cruise ship.

    Pickup was flawless and easy. We left on time and made a few interesting stops on the way and the way back from Hobbiton. Hobbiton was a fantastic experience. It does transport you into the magical realm of Middle-earth. Well worth the trip.

    Being huge Tolkien fans this was an extremely rewarding adventure! Our tour guide (Dom) was exceptional, he was very knowledgeable about everything and very personable!     Hobbiton visit

    Visiting Hobbiton was a highlight of our trip 'down under'. We had the most wonderful day starting with our tour operator, well organised, and very informative during our journey to Hobbiton. Whilst there, a place most magical. You have to see it to believe it. Highly recommended

    Sorry for.the late response. The tour was excellent. Our bus driver (I believe his name was Peter) was very informative, pointing out & detailing many interesting sights along the route to Hobbiton. Upon arriving he’d provided specific information regarding logistics for meeting back at the bus, bathrooms , etc. The day had perfect weather that made for a spectacular visit. On our return trip he provided a scenic stop for an incredible vista. We highly recommend this tour. Well done Viator. Michael & Cheryl

    Haven’t read the books or seen the films then don’t worry, this place is awesome and you’ll be entranced by the scenery. The tour guide taking us to Hobbiton was an ex teacher and so knowledgeable with a calming manner. The tour guide at Hobbiton was great as well and everything runs to time but you’re not rushed. Everyone needs to visit here 😊😊

    Great tour of the movie sets where they filmed Lord of the Rings movies. Tour Guide was very knowledgeable at the venue. You walk about 2 hours through the venue. The tour guide Brian from the cruise ship to the venue was very knowledgeable about the Tauranga area. The bus coach was very comfortable,

    Wonderful day at Hobbiton. Magical feeling to this little Hobbit village. Guides were awesome and the attention to detail was amazing for this “movie set.” Beautiful day and just amazing. Our bus driver Gary was excellent and gave lots of info about the area as we drove thru. Great experience.

    We had a great guide, Brian, who narrated our ride from port to Hobbiton. He gave us interesting info on the area and New Zealand. Once at Hobbiton, our guide was Rachel. She was fun. Hobbiton was absolutely beautiful. You really felt like you were in the real world of the Shire.

    Bus guides not accommodating

    Make sure u call the excursion company ahead so u and ur friends are together on same bus. They would not make any changes when we got to bus. They have several of them leaving at different times and our party was split up. Not at all accommodating even if another couple was willing to switch buses with us.

    Hi, thanks for the review, sorry that you were not on the same coach as your friends but on some days we have over 200 passengers on the Hobbiton tours on 6 or 7 vehicles which all depart at different times depending on the slot at Hobbiton. If you want to travel as a group then you should make one booking, then you will be on the same tour. When you receive the conformation of the booking you are given a start time, if that is not the same as others in your group then that is when you need to contact us at Cruise Tours Tauranga so we can make changes if possible. At least you enjoyed the tour so thanks for the feedback. We do sometimes switch pax around if possible but with over 300 pax on our tours each day there is not much time to do this. Regards Ian

    Hobbiton Shore Excursion

    Hobbiton must not be missed! Our cruise excursion had filled up by the time we were able to book, so we looked to Viator, and are so glad we did! We received the exact excursion we would have if booking with the cruise line, for a fraction of the price. The pick-up from the terminal was very well organized. We loaded onto a large bus for the trip through the beautiful countryside to the magical set of Hobbiton. Our driver, Gary, regaled us with stories and information about that part of New Zealand, and snuck in a couple of extra stops when time allowed. Highly recommend this tour!

    A true LOTR/Hobbit lover's trip!

    Wow! This was a true LOTR/Hobbit lovers trip. Of course, it was cool seeing how Hobbiton was re-created and walking through the set. The attention to detail was amazing! What was surprising was the horticultural experience. Beautiful flowers and trees lined the paths and filled the spaces between the hobbit houses. Mutiple types of fruits and veggies evident. Our guide, Sam (yes, he claims it is his real name!), was a true Tolkien lore master. His stories of the movie set were peppered with quotes and anecdotes from both the books and the movies. The pace during the tour was very comfortable, so there were not issues seeing everything. The ability to go into a wonderfully re-created hobbit house was appreciated. And a drink at the Green Dragon Inn was a perfect ending. For this LOTR/Hobbit fan, it was a great day!

    The LOTR tour is great. It's limited to the re-creation of the Shire but it's well worth it. Don't spend more money using the cruise line versions of this tour.

    Faultless and perfectly executed Cruise Ship shore excursion

    We booked this as a cruise ship experience which means there is always a nervous element to making sure you return in time, but there is no need to worry on this excursion. The team were in contact before hand confirming time and location for pick-up based on the ship’s arrival and departure plans. The team were waiting exactly where they said and my wife and our friends boarded modern coach within a few minutes. We were given lanyards to identify our coach and our driver/guide, Keith, was friendly and informative on the drive down to Hobbiton. I won’t say too much about Hobbiton itself other than to say we are so glad that we made the effort to visit. It was well worth the 90 minute drive each way and the cost to see this beautiful place and hear the stories of production and construction. We left in good time for the ship’s departure and even stopped at a look out point in the hills to allow a leg stretch and photo opportunity. We were delivered back to the port gates, right where we were picked up at almost exactly the planned time. A faultless day, executed perfectly by the tour team. Thank You!

    This was an awesome experience. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the history behind the Hobbiton experience. The whole place was just amazing and being able to look through the main characters house was fantastic and lived up to the films portrayal of life. It certainly made my daughters day!

    You Really Should Take This Tour

    We booked with Viator as they had an excursion that was directed towards cruise ship passengers and the arrival and departure of the cruise ship. The drive is about an hour and a half from Tauranga Port. The bus was very clean, up to date and the bus driver was interesting as he did narrate over the PA interesting sites on our ride to the Hobbiton Movie Set. The tour was handles well like a well oiled machine. They have everything extremely organized. The set itself is beautiful and the details of the set are unbelievable. The grounds and gardens are also just lovely. Our tour guide at Hobbiton Movie set was excellent. I believe his name was Peter and he was excellent. He stayed with us and explained each set area and gave us time to take pictures. We never felt rushed he did an excellent job. The tour is actually pretty long and plenty of time to see each set. One set is an interactive set where you can actually go inside one of the houses. The detail is just amazing. Even on the outside of one of the houses, the fresh honey and honeycombs are fresh. The flowers are just astounding are all of the area.
