We took the whole family on this 4x4 mountain and waterfall adventure, and it was absolutely amazing! The scenery was breathtaking, from lush valleys to crystal-clear rivers and hidden basins. Every moment felt like an adventure, and our guide made it both exciting and fun.
Such a beautiful way to experience the heart of Tahiti, we loved every second! Highly recommend this tour for families looking to explore beyond the beaches.

The views and scenery were spectacular! Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable - these things were wonderful about the tour. However, the road is incredibly bumpy for the duration of the drive (approx 6 hours) which became quite monotonous and uncomfortable after a short while. While this is out of the control of the operators, it did put a bit of a dampen on the day for me.

The trip was fantastic - we saw a part of the island that it seems is much less traveled. Based on what I saw there was maybe 100 people a day that take this trip. Vaitea was an excellent host - friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating- we had a mixed group - my family spoke mainly English, another spoke mainly French, and a couple with the husband speaking mainly English but the wife fluent in both French and English. Vaitea was able to accommodate all of us seamlessly and had great energy! I would certainly recommend having the top off of the truck so you have the full panoramic view. Loved seeing the eels which proved to my family they exist after a visit to Source de Vaima the day prior where we didn’t see any!

An action packed day of adventure. We had the perfect day in Papeete and the weather couldn’t have been better. The views were amazing and our lunch stop and swim was perfect. The perfect way to spend a day getting to see the island from the inside out 👌😊

Stunning views all along the way, with lots of waterfalls as well. Yes, its bumpy, believe the warnings! But its also part of the fun, and we had a great adventure. Go see the interior, which 99% of visitors never experience!

This was so much fun!
The road was bumpy. But the truck was really comfortable.
We stood the whole time.
What a great way to see the interior of the island.
So many waterfalls!

The tour was very good but I felt been cheated for paying $80 usd 10 minutes ride from Mahana Lodge to PPT airport with our two carry-on size luggage. Specially when we arrived at Mahana Lodge (we were the last couple for drop-off) I asked multiple times how much it would cost for him to give us a ride to the airport and I will pay him now and he (the tour operator) replied very friendly, not to worry, not to worry, no traffic now, pay me at the airport. After arriving at the airport I asked him how much do I owe you, he said 8000xpf or 80usd, no choice now but to pay :(

Great experience but be prepared to have all your teeth rattled! Guide was great!! You will need massage or chiropractor when done

Such a great tour! Beautiful landscape and a great activity for a day in Papeete. Lots of great local knowledge and stories shared. Yes it’s bumpy and you’ll come back a little bruised but completely off the beaten track and worth it.

So cool! This was a unique way to see a different side of Tahiti. We drove through town to get to a dirt road and then took dirt roads and 4x4 trails through the mountains. We saw beautiful waterfalls, amazing flora and fauna, eels, chickens, got to cool off in the river and eat a picnic lunch (they stop in the morning and you can purchase food from a bakery to take for the picnic). Mato was a great guide and we had a great time! I took too many pictures and videos. Take their suggestions for bug spray and sunblock seriously. Got a little burned and got bug bites because I forgot to reapply

Wow - what an experience! Our driver was Mato - friendly and very experienced and safety oriented, - you’ll understand why this is important when you go. This is not a ride for the meek, those with fear of heights, or who need to be pampered. The views were spectacular and at every turn. Because the road is so basic (single passage, mostly gravel/rock/boulders, potholes (small - craters), extremely steep (some grades more than 20 or 25%), tons of stream and other water crossings, and because there is so much to see, it is at a pleasant slow pace (you wouldn’t want to go faster even if you thought you could). We stopped at a nice place beside a river for a refreshing swim and lunch (you bring your own), and Mato had fresh, naturally ripened fruit for us as well. As we expected, it rained up at higher altitudes in the mountains (bring a rain jacket with a hood, don’t bring anything you don’t want to get wet unless you bring a small dry bag to keep it in (small: there is not a lot of room - 8 people sitting knee to knee in the back of a pickup that has benches on each side.). When not on the main Papeete roads leading to the mountains, everyone stands on the bench seats (barefoot-no shoes), holding on to the ‘roof-rack’ bars that run down the middle and each side of the truck. It’s actually pretty comfortable standing (you definitely want to stand to be able to see well) because Mato took the time to slowly navigate the road obstacles, and there is so much to see, and all the jostling keeps you flexing leg/core muscles. In a nutshell - my wife and I would/will definitely recommend this adventure (rain and all) and would definitely book it again if we are fortunate enough to return to this beautiful island.

10/10 once in a lifetime experience. Trust me you won't be disappointed. I went into this not expecting much but wow I was impressed.

It’s the road of a million VERY DEEP potholes!! We really enjoyed the entire excursion and our guide was fabulous. We are in our 70’s and it was still good!!
Wade_N, Dec 2025
This was an amazing experience. The scenery was breathtaking. Also the ride itself was really fun. Only thing is we didn’t see one dinosaur. Looked like we should have 🤣.
Tami_S, Dec 2025
What an amazing adventure through the mountain of Tahiti. Definitely remember to bring a rain jacket. You will get rained on😂. Our guide was very friendly, funny and knowledgeable of his Tahitian history. Be prepared for lots of pot holes, it’s definitely better to stand on top of the seats.
The inner island was just breathe taking. Pictures could never do it justice. This is a must do trip.

This was a great way to see the interior of the island, I really enjoyed it, great for a solo traveler IMO.
Chris_R, Dec 2025
Great trip traversing the island following the road “track” which supports the islands hydro electric system. Wonderful views as you travel thru the main tahiti-nui volcanic crater. Good way to see another side of tahiti away from the beaches and populated area. A full day trip well worth doing.

Excellent experience and the mountain views were stunning. The guides were very informative and friendly. The fresh water basin was an excellent stop to have a dip

Super nice views! Our driver was very nice and friendly, would definitely recommend to get nice views of the island!

Loved the tour, one of the best. The stop to buy lunch was a bakery. Excellent sandwiches and pastries and very reasonable, took cash or credit cards. Guides were very knowledgeable. Close to 8 hour tour. We rode through the middle of the island which was amazing. So glad we did it. Highly recommend even though it was very very bumpy at times it was so much fun as that was part of the fun. Please read the description if you have balance issues or back problems or physically impaired you may want to avoid. Most of my photos were too large to download.
Rand_A, Nov 2025
It has already been said, but be prepared for a very rocky, strenuous ride. Sometimes you bump the handrails with your ribs, and your knees and ankles have to work to keep your balance. But, it is a great way to see parts of the island you would never see.
Marti_R, Nov 2025
Very nice experience, have never seen so many waterfalls, guide was incredible. Road is a bit bumpy but nothing you can’t handle or need to focus on.

Awesome tour , I have never seen so may waterfalls in 1 day.
Standing in the back of the 4x4 was so much fun

Unique experience!
You have to go into this tour with an open mind, it’s unlike any other tour I did in the best way possible. This is not a standard tourist tour, yes you will see stuff, yes you’ll take pictures, and you’ll learn a lot about Tahiti but the most fun aspect is the experience itself, being on a bumpy road in 4x4 going where few others go, that’s super fun and with an awesome guide!
Nicolene_G, Oct 2025
Fabulous scenery and a whole lot of fun however! It is very bumpy and physically challenging as you go along very bumpy and steep narrow roads through the mountains. Some fitness required and wouldn’t recommend if have any injuries. Fantastic day and a lot of humour and fun!
Ken_B, Oct 2025
This was really fun, even in the rain. It’s is a crazy ride on pothole filled road. The open top was great and he covered half for those that didn’t want to get too wet. You see a lot of waterfalls and the scenery is great. It’s a fun adventure for sure!
Kimberly_J, Oct 2025
our guide was amazing driving through the valley and providing information all along the way. The weather the second half of the day was not great, but still enjoyable seeing beautiful scenery!! First stop was a small little bakery to purchase some snack for our picnic by the river. Delicious!
Bonnie_S, Oct 2025
From the hotel pickup, Rocco was a great host. Comfortable 4x4 truck with padded seat area, for a gorgeous island tour with informative narratives, and exciting stops along the way. Excillerating, sometimes bumpy ride across the island and into the volcano with the option of standing up safe and secure which our entire group did the entire day! Laughter, and gasped of the unbelievable vistas and exciting water crossings made this tour an unforgettable cherished adventure. The day just flew by! Don't fear the potholes!
Julie_B, Oct 2025
We did this tour on our arrival day after we flew into Tahiti at 4:30 am and our hotel wasn’t ready for us until 3:00 pm. Pickup and drop off was super easy. The tour through the middle of the island was dreamy. The views stunning. The guides were fantastic! The truck seats were padded nicely. It is really bumpy like they say it is. We enjoyed it all. Such a fun day.

This was a lot of fun and the guide was very informative. The swimming was a highlight for me. Lots of fun.
