I got so much out of this tour. I love coffee and gained new appreciation for what goes into it. Truthfully the bag I bought in the gift store is already gone and I’ve been home less than a week… I need to come back to get more. Now that I know what fresh coffee can actually taste like, flavor of the coffee is unlike anything I can buy even for a steep price in the states. My partner used to own a coffee shop and even he learned quite a bit of new information about coffee! We loved putting human faces to the coffee we drink and appreciated the history of the workers that was shared and the emphasis on the coop structure and economic development of the region. Really a great experience, I didn’t want to leave.

Coffee & more tour

Tío Leo coffee has a lot more than coffee. Wonderful host. The Viator guide was engaging, and always looking out for our needs. The waterfall is cool on a hot day and the water amazingly clear.

Must Do Coffee Tour

Matthew_S, Apr 2024
The coffee tour and tasting was amazing. I am actually sipping a cup of Tio Leo's coffee as I write this. I am from a very rural, mountainous area so I could probably have skipped the waterfall but it was still a beautiful addition to the day. This is the "must do" of coffee tours. Our driver was amazing and knowledgeable. He was so gracious in allowing us to practice our Spanish with him, but do not worry, if you only speak English he is great at speaking English.

Tio Leo and Aaron

Greg_R, Jan 2024
Let’s start with Aaron our tour guide for the day. He was on time to pick us up and very friendly and filled us in on the details of our day. As the day progressed he not only described what we were seeing but answered all our questions. He even told us about how his family ended up in Coco Beach and about his family. As we prepared for lunch Aaron had to improvise because the restaurant we were supposed to attend had closed the week before. Aaron selected a family owned restaurant in Liberia that was wonderful. Aaron truly enjoys and is good at his job. Tio and his staff were wonderful as always. We make the trip to visit them every year we come down just because we love the experience. This year was more intimate because it was just my wife, Tio, and myself on the tour. We were able to find out more about Tio and his family and the state of the coffee and tourism business in Costa Rica. Tio allowed us to plant a new plum tree that he dedicated to us and our names will be put in front of the tree. Visiting Tio and the cafe is the highlight of our trips down and an experience everyone should check out.

Response from Host, Feb 2024

Dear Greg_R, We appreciate you sharing your wonderful experience! Aaron's personal touch during the tour, including insights into his family and the area, made it extra special. Despite a change in lunch plans, Aaron's quick thinking led to a delightful meal in Liberia. Thank you for your kind words, and we look forward to hosting you again for more unforgettable moments. Best,

Dont waste time on this tour

Robert_N, Nov 2023
Would not recommend this tour. We wasted 3 hours as water fall was closed due to weather and tour operator should have know about it prior and most likely did so we drove around and got dropped off in downtown Libera to walk around ( nothing really to see) although we were offered to see some animals, but that was not what we wanted or purchased. The Coffee tour and lunch were good. The tour operator should have cancelled and rescheduled or refunded.

Amazing - Have no words

Amy_C, Nov 2023
Our driver Eric was amazing, let us know the plan, kept us on schedule and we even had time to stop at a gift shop. The waterfall was amazing. The lifeguard would not let us swim in the falls for safety (depends on the weather), so Eric asked one of the guys who works there, Juan if there was more to see. He took us back to a little lagoon to jump in and swim and took us up to the top of the waterfall for some of the most amazing pictures. - So grateful to them both. Tio Leo - I am not sure I can say enough about this experience. 1st things 1st - Bring Bug Spray, mosquitos are hungry. The food at the restaurant was some of the best food I have ever had, the tour of the coffee and cacao was so informative. All the different trees and plants around to coffee to support the ecosystem there. The staff was so much fun. Every time we would finish a part of the tour, there was a surprise, MORE every time. Eating starfish fruit, fresh chocolate, empanadas, body scrubs, sugar cane pressing, tasting fresh sugar cane, and watch the roaster freshly roast the seeds. I am sure I missed something. Would do it again if we get the opportunity.

We're thrilled to hear that Eric, our dedicated driver, made your trip memorable by ensuring a smooth schedule and going above and beyond to provide additional experiences. We appreciate your valuable feedback on the tour, the stunning waterfall, and the informative coffee and cacao exploration. Best regards, Manuel D

Coffee tour was fun....

Mattnaft1, Aug 2023
Coffee tour was fun. Interesting how they make the coffee sustainably. Water fall nice but a lot of people.

Response from Host, Sep 2023

Dear Mattnaft1. Thank you for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed the coffee tour and appreciated our sustainable practices. We apologize for the crowd at the waterfall, but we're glad you still had a great experience. Thank you for recommending us! Manuel D

More than what we expected!!

Stephanie_H, Dec 2022
We were so happy with this tour! We had so much fun at Tio Leo's coffee plantation and didn't expect to get and experience all that was included in this tour. Not only did we learn about how the coffee beans are grown, but we also learned about different types of beans and coffees. Also included in this tour was empanada making, juice tasting, coffee tasting, chocolate making and tasting, a short spa treatment to exfoliate our arms, and a plantain snack. We had so much fun and learned so much. And we even got to meet Tio Leo himself! He autographed our bags of coffee and mugs that we purchased! As far as the waterfall, we actually decided to replace this portion of the tour with an authentic Costa Rican lunch after the coffee tour because we had actually visited the waterfall a few days prior, not realizing we booked it twice. The tour company was more than accommodating to grant our request. They took us to a local restaurant that served us a delicious meal that we all enjoyed. Such a fun day. We would highly recommend!!

Response from Host, Dec 2022

Dear Stephanie, Thank you so much for your kind words! We are so pleased that you had such a great time! We are also glad that you were able to enjoy an authentic Costa Rican lunch instead of the waterfall - it sounds like it was a great experience. We are so happy that you recommend this tour and we hope to welcome you back soon!

Family Fun!

Great excursion

Wonderful day. Steven our guide was fabulous. Beautiful waterfall and Tio Leo’s tour was above and beyond fun. Highly recommend!

If you love coffee, you should do this

Charmaine_F, Aug 2021
We had a wonderful experience from the time we were picked up, to the time we were dropped off. Our driver, Santos, was awesome! He was so knowledgable about the area, even the wildlife we would pass along the way that even the car ride was enjoyable. The waterfall was beautiful. The highlight of our trip was Tio Leo's coffee tour. Tio Leo had so much knowledge about coffee, cocoa, fruit trees, etc. This tour is very interactive so, besides walking around the coffee plantation and learning, you also get to participate in many activities! We had a wonderful time!

Many Unexpected Surprises (and coffee!)

Karissa_P, Aug 2021
This tour was fantastic. So many unexpected surprises. You get much more than you pay for. For coffee lovers don’t miss this one. Our guides were amazing. They told us so much about Costa Rica and our surroundings. The waterfall was closed the day we went and the guides quickly changed our plans for us and took us somewhere else. Gracias Santos and Jose!!!

Awesome coffee plantation tour, good waterfall experience

Shawn_W, Feb 2021
We LOVED this tour! The private coffee plantation tour was amazing, authentic food, and a great driver. We just wish we had more history about the waterfalls (Cataratas de Cortés). We definitely enjoyed our time on the tour.

A very special experience!

Krystal_B, Jan 2021
Wow! Highly recommend. What a great day. I thought the waterfall was going to be my favorite part, but the coffee tour exceeded my expectations! Such a great experience. Tio Leo (the owner) was our tour guide and made it so special. Definitely worth every penny. The waterfall was amazing too! Throughout the tour, the guide was awesome and very flexible with our request of stopping at a gas station for beverages and just really good energy overall. Loved it, thank you!

A Perfect Day Excursion

bk23232019, Nov 2019
While staying in Tamarindo, we were looking to fill a couple days with fun activities. My cousin is a huge coffee aficionado, and suggested we try to find something related to that. While this area of Ganacaste is not generally known for it's coffee production, we were happy to find this tour. We were picked up by our driver/guide who was able to explain quite a bit about the area, and what was in store for us. First stop was the coffee plantation, which is more like a plant nursery, with many different flora suited to grow in Costa Rica. Tio Leo, the owner, was our personal guide through the grounds, which included coffee "cherry" picking, empanada making, coffee roasting and tasting, and sugar cane drink making. We even topped it off with a celebratory shot of Costa Rican rum! Tio Leo's also had a great shop where we were able to buy coffee, any gifts from local vendors to bring home. After this stop, we had lunch with our driver, and were able to enjoy even more traditional cuisine with good company. The final stop was the Llanos del Cortez Waterfall, which was a very cool experience. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and the water itself was very clean, albeit a little chilly. After this, it was time to head home, where we were able to reflect on a great day in Guanacaste!
