Itinerary

Depart Melbourne in the morning via Westgate Bridge, the longest bridge in Australia, with sweeping views of the city and Port Phillip Bay.

Pass Geelong, Victoria’s second-largest city, as you make your way towards the Surf Coast known for lovely beachside towns and powerful surf. During a short stop in Anglesea, stretch your legs by strolling along the Anglesea River before continuing your scenic journey.

Soak in the breathtaking coastal scenery of the Great Ocean Road as you drive and during frequent scenic stops, including a photo op at Eastern View where the Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch stretches over the road.

Have time to purchase lunch in Kennet River or Lorne. Afterward, take a walk through a wilderness refuge with eucalyptus trees that shelter wild koalas. Look for the koalas in the trees napping or munching on leaves—the large population of koalas virtually guarantees multiple sightings.

Continue by coach through the Otway Ranges to the Shipwreck Coast and Port Campbell National Park. There you see iconic rock formations starting with Loch Ard Gorge. Hear the story of the shipwreck at Loch Ard in 1878 and view other rock formations with amusing names such as Dumpling Pots, Razorback, and Island Archway. Then head to the Twelve Apostles before sunset to watch the sky change colors over the majestic rock formation.

On the return to Melbourne, expect a stop in the town of Colac for dinner (own expense).

We had the best time. We were picked up from the hotel by Rachel and the fun began. She was so much fun the whole trip. She spotted kangaroos and pulled over so we could take pictures. She also would get out every stop and show us things or take pictures for us. She was very knowledgeable about the area. We saw a koala bear (she helped us spot) and lots of cockatoos. The views were spectacular. This tour was long with a lot to see. I loved it. Rachel was very patient and made it so much fun for all of us. Thank you for the great tour, Rachel.

We had a wonderful time with Alisha on the Great Ocean Road sunset tour. The views were amazing the whole way (we got lucky and what looked like a nasty cloudy day turned gorgeous). Alisha was a great guide and turned out to be a fantastic wildlife spotter — we saw kangaroos, koalas, and even a very shy echidna! Alisha’s excitement at spotting animals was infectious and really took the trip to the next level. Great tour!

Stunning Landmarks Hours from Melbourne

There is so much natural beauty around the world & this tour showcases that first hand! There are so many gorgeous rock structures a few hours away from Melbourne. The views are breathtaking, but the tour is nearly 13 hours. I was under the impression it was 9-10 hours long. We left early in the morning & got back around 11:30p. Plan on being gone for nearly the entire day. If your time is limited in Melbourne, maybe pass unless you’re really looking forward to seeing incredible rock structures.

Chris, the driver and guide, was enthusiastic about his work and pleasant. The vehicle was terrible. It was extremely uncomfortable. The seats were hard, and so close together it was much worse than an airplane. I had trouble getting in and out of my row of seats because the rows were so close together, and I’m a small person. A friend on the trip noticed that the tread on the tires was worn down, and he was worried for our safety. The itinerary was such that we basically sat on the bus for about 12 hours, with a lot of rushing to get to the next stop on time. We visited a lovely town, Lorne, for lunch, but barely had enough time to eat our lunch. There were many parts of the trip that were unnecessary, like the rainforest, for example, and if the less interesting stops and detours had been left out, the trip would have been less rushed. Many of us on the van felt nauseous from the fast driving around curves, and at least two of us that I know of got motion sickness. I had also expected, from the description, that we would see more animals indigenous to Australia. Instead we saw one koala up in a tree. I would dissuade anyone from going on this trip and I have lost confidence in Viator’s quality control. I had another full day excursion scheduled with Viator and I cancelled it, because I cannot rely on the quality of the vehicle and the excursion.

Our vehicles are purpose-selected for small-group touring and are maintained under a strict safety and servicing schedule. Tyres are inspected daily before departure and we can assure you the vehicle was roadworthy on the day of travel. That said, we acknowledge that comfort is subjective, and we’re sorry that the seating and ride quality did not suit you. The Great Ocean Road is a long day by nature, with significant driving required to reach the highlights safely within daylight hours. Our itinerary is designed to balance iconic coastal scenery, rainforest environments, and wildlife opportunities. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, as animals move freely in their natural habitat, but we aim to provide the best possible opportunities. It is worth addressing that while the tour is of 12 hours total duration, to suggest that 12 hours is spend on a touring vehicle is ludicrous. With 45 minutes to an hour at lunch, and extended stops at places like the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and numerous others, it would seem your math might need some revision. We’re sorry to hear that some guests experienced motion discomfort and that the pace felt rushed, particularly at lunch. Your comments regarding stop selection and timing are appreciated and will be shared with our product and operations teams for review. We regret that this experience led you to cancel your upcoming tour and lose confidence in Viator. Breathtaking views and spectacular scenery!!

It was a stunning 243 km drive with scenic coastal views, dramatic cliffs, beautiful beaches, rainforests and iconic landmarks like the “Twelve Apostles” limestones stacks, where we ended during stunning view of the sunset. During our drive we stopped by the memorial archway, many beautiful coastal towns, Lock Ard Gorge, Kennett River and on the way we also saw Koalas in their native bushland. Our tour guide Aleks was very knowledgeable, friendly, good storyteller and an excellent guide. While it was a long day it was worth the experience. Would highly recommend it. Thank you Aleks for making our Great Ocean Road Tour very enjoyable!!

The trip fits a lot into a long day. Our guide Jono was very friendly and knowledgeable, making sure everyone was comfortable onboard. The highlights were the views along the coast, the spectacular Loch Ard Gorge and of course the Twelve Apostles. It was a cool day when we went, so take an extra layer or two as it can be chilly when the sun goes down. It's a long tour, we were picked up at 11am for the sunset tour and returned just after midnight. Plenty of stops along the way and places to eat. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend. Our guide Jono was excellent.

This tour is long and boring except the sunset. The bus is old and comfortable. I double booked by mistake, and they refused to refund me. They said it's my fault. Okay, go ahead use the extra $298 for your Christmas party. Stick your strict company policies.

Hi Oswald, Thanks for your review. To clarify for future readers, this relates to a duplicate booking made by you rather than an error on our part. Both bookings were placed more than a month before the tour date, both were confirmed, and both were acknowledged by you, including replies to the pickup detail emails for each reservation. We were only advised of the duplicate booking after the tour had already taken place. By that point, the seats had been held for your group for over a month and the service had been fully delivered. As clearly stated on your Viator voucher, and in the five emails sent to you outlining our policy, changes or refunds within 24 hours of departure are not permitted. This is exactly why travel insurance is recommended. Had the duplicate charge been identified earlier by checking your bank charges, we could have assisted well in advance. Unfortunately, raising this after the tour left no options available. We are always happy to help when contacted in time, but managing their own bookings and payments ultimately sits with the guest.

We had a great Sunset tour of the Great Ocean Road with Go West tours. Our guide/driver was Michael and he was friendly, open, and energetic. While we didn't have the best weather at the start of the trip, Michael's enthusiasm brightened up the day. He may have been more excited than we were to see both koalas AND kangaroos in the wild. The Apostles were of course majestic, despite some cloud cover that covered up most of the sunset. Starting later in the day was the right timing for our group, but be aware that the trip does get back to Melbourne quite late. It was around midnight when we returned to our hotel.

Our guide Robbo knows where to take us to for great views along the great ocean road, with the right amount of time per stay. He tried his best to look for coala for the group, that effort itself is very touching. He would also alert the group whenever he noticed an animal. No one can predict weather, so we have to check the weather and make our own call. At the end, he sent us back to hotel safely.

I was disappointed that after many months of conversations the Great Ocean Road eco tour I had booked with Go West, through Viator, was canceled at the last minute. Fortunately, Go West offered me another tour. The driver and guide was friendly and knowledgeable, even guaranteeing that we would see at least one koala bear in the wild, which we did. It's a long and tiring tour, but the scenery is spectacular and the Twelve Apostles were breathtaking. Nature at its very finest.

Although we got rain in the late afternoon and did not get to see the sunset, I consider the tour with Jaimes on 5th October a great success. The white sand beaches, the views, the cliffs and rock formations are impressive and the weather just added to dramatic landscape. We did spot kangaroos and that one koala in the wild, as well as cockatoos and a few other birds.

Chilly winters yet fun

I booked this trip a night before, and was not sure if it’ll be worth it, with short timelines at each stop. But, Jools, our guide, was so meticulous with the timings! She was the sweetest, helpful and the funny guide who added brightness and warmth to this tour. Despite it being winters, I had a great time at the tour with the facts and history of the places we passed through and stopped at that she told us. The bus was comfortable throughout and Jools had the best playlist- songs that you could even request for All in all highly recommend! And as they say, in Melbourne if you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes :)
