Me and my friend had an amazing time on the food tour! We were so impressed by Linda, she was knowledgeable, friendly and had some great stories. We thoroughly enjoyed the places we went to eat, the food was delicious and varied plus all independent places that supported local. Would love to try another tour!

Talking and eating but not a food tour - very disappointing

Sherry_L, Jul 2022
We were 60 minutes into this when my husband said "I thought this was going to be a food tour." Having been on food tours around the world, this one had the very least amount of mentions of--food--! We learned virtually nothing from Paul, the guide, but did pick up some information from locals on the tour. This was supposed to be a 2 hour tour, but after 3 hours, we were so behind schedule, we still hadn't arrived at the fifth (last) location. That was to be cheeses--a favorite of ours. My husband and I had to leave at the 3 hour point to sprint to a City walking tour, which turned out to be a highlight of the day. Very, very disappointing. Lots of talking, little description of local food scene, local sourcing/ingredients, local food history, culture and traditions---all of which are usually both featured and entertaining on a food tour. The food choices in three places were quite good. One stop was for dessert bars/cookies that tasted and looked commercially prepared. The highlight was the ice cream store, where the owner was full of great information--wish he had led the tour.

Hi Sherri, At Yorkshire Appetite, we appreciate all the reviews since they help us a lot to improve. First of all, we are very sorry for not having met your expectations. Paul is a much loved guide of the tours and has a wealth of knowledge about the town and its food scene as well as being an experienced cook and food and wine expert. Our experience is a culinary and cultural adventure so we include both food and local history to understand the town of Harrogate as well as its food. Talking and eating is essentially what a food tour is about and we usually offer a balance of history and food and this balance is enjoyed by 99% of our customers. . I apologise if on this occasion the emphasis was more on the history. As regards the timing. The tour is advertised at 3 hours long, not two hours. If our guides are made aware of the need for time to be of the essence, then they will go out of their way to ensure we are finished on time. As regards the cakes and cookies being commercially; Some are made by the chef of the deli themselves and the others are made by a local artisan bakery producing tray bakes. We take pride in supporting local independents and so take great care over the choice of food we offer. Alex, from Vanillis Gelato, is indeed a highlight of our tour, along with his ice cream and we are happy you enjoyed most of the food. We are just sorry that you were not happy with the commentary on this occasion. Best Wishes Kay and the team at Yorkshire Appetite.
