While Ryan states that you are picked up via "air conditioned vehicle," prospective customers should be aware that this is essentially a walking tour that primarily uses ferrys and streetcars to get around. By walking, we mean, a lot; a conservatively estimated 5.5 miles, including a long trek from the trolly line to the cruise port. Similar tours in Tokyo make that very clear; the description of this tour in Viator does not. At the start, our group was placed in 3 different taxis and there was no guided tour through the city, and the taxi driver took a back route to the ferry, presumably due to traffic on a busy Friday. Ryan also alluded to the double-cost of ship-sponsored excursions, but he charges about the same. Ryan is a tall man, he moves fast, providing information to those who can keep up, but he could not be heard by those who were slower (there werre quite a few of us). He does include an excellent Wagyu lunch, he is knowledgeable, and is a native English-speaker. We saw a lot including some cherry blossoms in a park, we enjoyed the foot soak and views, but much of the touring through town is by streetcar and foot. So, be aware.

We tried our best to communicate this reality and right off the bat when i saw you over 80 with a cane at the port welcome center I warned that there would be significant walking and you told me that it would be ok. I did give options for you to skip the shrine stairs, the beach and geo park walking, and the final walk to the ship which were declined one after another. We do want to properly accommodate seniors for this reality and when I offered to get you additional transportation or reduce the pathway we were declined throughout the day. We will improve our communications and include the exact amount of walking for this tour for the future but total walking for this trip including the time in the riverside park for cherry blossoms was 4.5 KM. For those who skip the shopping section as your group did, we will cut 2km off the end there and make sure that anyone over 80 or those who want to will not take that walk although your group unanimously rejected this offer.
Furthermore, this spring we saw many gusts over 80 who had canes and recent knee or hip replacements and there is only so much we can do to be able to see the parks, foot hot springs, volcano, but we will be redesigning the tour for next year to make things easier and we will calculate the total steps and clearly explain this from here forward.
We will add significant clarity to this from here forward in our intro e-mail as well as make changes from here forward.

Ryan and Aya are the perfect team guides. They accommodated all levels of traveler on our tour. Although recent storms had impacted the availability of cherry blossoms, the tour was arranged to provide an array of wonderful experiences in Kagoshima. Fantastic experience.

It was very enjoyable until our group of retired individuals were required to walk back to the cruise ship after the last item of interest. We were told it was not too far, maybe a 20 minute walk, but it was considerably more than that. In all I recorded in excess of 5 miles of walking during the excursion. This was not a hiking excursion. If transportation back to the ship had been provided in the excursion I would have given it a 5. Other people on the excursion concurred. and were much disgruntled at having to walk so far, and so could only give a 3. I would only recommend this excursion if return transportation was provided and until this is assured I could not recommend.

Hey Jean,
we got another customer who was displeased by that walk as well and we did try our best to offer the transportation for that as your group was short of time to do the shopping section which turned that into far less of a long walk but we are going to plan for seniors from here forward and make sure to have transportation either getting rid of the shopping section of the tour at the end or increase the amount of transportation throughout the day. Your concerns are respected and we will do better as well as communicate more clearly on exactly how much walking there is from here forward and we will make this tour as all ages friendly as possible.
Best Regards,
Ryan

Awesome experience in Kagoshima. Pick up at Port with excellent guides speaking fluent English and knowing way around town. Efficient, interesting and exciting. Volcano, hot spring foot bath, cherry blossoms and yes sparking sake while trekking around. Yes please. Lunch, by far best of trip. See photos because I can't do justice. Wagu beef rare. .

Thanks MaryJane,
We all try our best and even see room for improvement. Time is your respected asset and when here in Japan, amazing food and drinks with breathtaking views is a great way to use it! I am glad you had fun and to be the best excursion on a 4 month cruise is an honor we could produce.
Love,

With the awesome weather we were able to see a beautiful city, the valcano spewing ash against a blue sky, eat wagyu beef that tasted and chewed like cotton candy, and experience the very clean and prompt public transportation. Spending time in Japan is a big bucket list item and Ryan and his wife, Iya (sp?) were amazing and fun guides. Ryan is well connected, we are keeping his contact info!

It was really nice that there's 2 guides, one for the front & one in the back of the group. Ryan & Aya were very nice capable guide. Ryan was knowledgeable & stuck to the time limit. Lunch was excellent & so was the extra drinks after the lunch. Foot dipping in the hot springs was a n excellent stop. All in all it was a wonderful tour.

You had such a great group and we are happy to make everyone's trip so much fun, it is our top priority.. that and getting back to the ship on time with such a short amount of time on shore!

We had a wonderful experience with Ryan from Unbeaten Japan. From the hot springs on the Volcanic Island to the fabulous lunch in Kagoshima, everything was incredible. We truly enjoyed our day!

This tour was excellent and very personal, there eight of us and we traveled by taxi, tram, ferry and walking. There is a lot of walking so keep this in mind.
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Hey Liz,
Thank you for your kind words. We are reducing the walking for next year but getting to the volcanic hot spring for our feet and the cherry blossoms by the river will still be walking. You and your husband's positive energy was fantastic to be around and I am glad we could share this city we love with you.

Great tour! Ryan was super flexible and customized our tour to us. He have us time to souvenir shop and changed the location of our lunch per our request. We highly recommend this tour for any Americans that want to see Kagoshima. We feel that we had a the opportunity to see the city and learn about the history of Kagoshima at our pace. The tour was in English, with someone who was from the States.

Excellent excursion with friendly and informative guide. Ryan took us on the ferry to Mount Sakurjima, where we tried the hot spring fed foot bath. We visited the 1300 year old shrine where there panoramic views of Kagoshima. We had an amazing lunch of Kagoshima Wagyu in an authentic restaurant. Sadly we didn’t see much blossom as the trees have been slow to flower, but the trip was very worthwhile and we would highly recommend.
