We had such a nice time, and we are so glad we booked this tour! Our guide, Yuki, was so kind and made the tour even more interesting and fun. The tour itself was a brilliant ‘highlights’ tour of Sakurajima - we saw amazing views and went to places like the foot bath and pottery studio (to do the ash painting) where we wouldn’t have easily known about or found if we just tried to visit the island on our own. The ash painting was also really fun, and there are different options for however confident (or not!) you are with art to make sure you end up with a result you will be happy with! :)
It’s also really great to be shown around by a local guide, we learned lots about not only Sakurajima but the area of Kagoshima prefecture and Japan.
Overall, I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants a stress-free, fun and enjoyable trip to Sakurajima! And thank you again to Yuki! :)

Fantastic place and time punctual trip, good mix of nature and art.
Mt Sakurajima history was amazing to observe.
James_P, Apr 2026
Be sure to leave plenty of time to explore all this island has to offer.
There is usually ash in the air, so you may consider bringing a mask.

We took a short ferry ride to Sakurajima Island. The foot bath from the thermal springs was a wonderful experience. We bought some oranges from the visitor center that were some of the best we've ever tasted. We also had fun making art from the volcanic ash, a nice memento from our time in Sakurjima.

Cozy was a very good guide. She gave us background & stories of where we went. Foot bath was an experience even though a little HOT. I recommend this tour. She even helped us get back to the ships shuttle bus. Thank you very much Cozy.

A nice half day tour. The tour guide was a very nice lady. Good for people with limited time ashore.
Kath_B, Mar 2026
Allow more than 30 minutes, if traveling by cab, due to some heavy traffic.
Otherwise it was a very knowledgeable experience.
Paula_B, Mar 2026
We had a fun day with ferry ride, shrine, national park, foot bath park, art project, and volcano. We even saw a gigantic Sakurajima radish, I'm guessing it weighed around 30 pounds. That's less than half the record!
It's a great excursion to do from a cruise, back two hours before all aboard.

Our guide Kumi took us on the ferry. The volcano is still active and he gave us all the information and statistics of the Volcano, we also visited hot spring and pottery workshop where the hospitality was so good.

We had a great time. Our guide Yukiko was amazing, knowledgeable, polite, helpful and carrying. It was a pleasure to spend the day with her and to see Kagoshima. It was exiting to be very close to an active volcano and to have a chance to paint with it’s ashes. I recommend the tour with Yukiko to all my friends and family.

Aya did a wonderful job showing us the beautiful island of Sakurajima off of the Kagoshima coast. We took a quick ferry ride to the island and viewed a shrine, took a foot bath in a thermal bath, visited a pottery factory where we painted with ash and then went to the highest accessible point at the observatory. Saw amazing views of an active volcano. Great half day trip!!

You're delighted you enjoyed the scenery and experiences.

Tour was good. Would have been better had it not rained. But, not the tour guides fault though. She tried very hard to make the tour interesting by engaging with everyone on the tour. She took pictures of everyone while doing the ash painting pictures. Which at first we thought would be silly. However, it turned out to be fun, and we came home with our own souvenir.

Thank you for joining our Sakurajima tour.
Although the weather was disappointing, we hope you enjoyed seeing the spectacular volcano.
We're glad you also enjoyed the ash art experience.

Know which port you’re coming into. Getting to the ferry is easy, but may take some time. We had fun making a souvenir to bring home, views were wonderful!

We have a great time even it was raining. Our most memorable part was painting our master piece. That was really fun. Our guide, Naomi, is very thorough. We learned so much from her. I recommend this tour for the beautiful place and history. It’s very interesting.

Yuki was an absolutely fantastic guide. Whose English is so good and easy to understand. The whole day was excellent from the moment we met Yuki. The highlights had been the arts glass, learning all about the volcano and hot foot soaking actually everything.
Thanks Yuki you are so good at your job.

You can easily do this by yourself. If on a cruise get the shuttle bus and walk across the parking lot to the ferry terminal. Ferry takes 15 mins and costs 230 yen. Buy tourist bus ticket and you get taken to key points
Carmen_F, Aug 2025
The itinerary of this excursion was good but we did not know that it would be a walking tour and that we would be taking a public bus that was jam packed with people. In addition, our tour guide, Yoshihiro could barely speak any English. So, it was very disappointing and definitely not as described. This has caused me to have serious doubts about booking through Viator in the future.
Response from Host, Sep 2025
Thank you for sharing your feedback.
We are deeply sorry that the tour did not meet your expectations.
We sincerely apologize that the tour description did not clearly state that “a portion of the tour involves walking” and that “crowded public buses would be used,” and that the guide's English proficiency was limited.
We take your feedback seriously and will work to improve the tour description and enhance guide training . Thank you very much for your valuable feedback.

Great trip. Really good places visited. Excellent organisation. Our guide, Yuki was excellent.
Even the sun came out so we could see the top of the volcano!

Unfortunately it was a raining day when we did the tour so there was a lot of fog...but we cant control the weather. The guide worked hard to make it an enjoyable day despite the weather.
Response from Host, Jun 2025
Thank you for your participation.
Unfortunately, you could not see Sakurajima, but we are glad you enjoyed the footbath and
Sakurajima ash art!

This was a fantastic way to spend the morning! Naomi, our guide, was terrific! She had a simple description of everything we were doing and where we were going and she answered all questions patiently and informatively. The volcano has been significantly erupting this whole week so it was quite dramatic!
The experience at the hot spring foot bath was relaxing and a great way to start after seeing the media presentations on the history of Sakurajima.
The experience at the pottery shop and “ash-art” creation was wonderful and the artistry of the mother-daughter team is incredible. We bought quite a number of their beautiful works.
I can not recommend Naomi and her tour more highly!!! It was great!!

The local guide Yuki is nice, informative and professional. My group also booked a private cruise ship terminal / Kagoshima downtown transfer and the arrangement was perfectly arranged. Highly recommended!

Thank you very much.

Wow! What a great day. Our guide is from the island and shared with us what it is like to grow up and live with an active volcano. It erupts hundreds of times per year and they have to live with the ash and always be prepared to evacuate. We rode the ferry and the bus all over, soaked our feet in a hot spring, visited a shrine and museum, made volcanic ash paintings, and while at the observation point closest to the volcano, it erupted!!! Best tour ever.

We enjoyed the ferry ride, visiting an ancient temple (and seeing our 1st cherry tree in full bloom), making volcanic ash art (even my husband had fun!), soaking my feet in a hot spring, getting breathtaking views from the observation platform, and learning about volcanos. Even getting caught in a torrential downpour - twice! - didn't dampen our spirits!

Booking through Viator gives a much more personal experience. There was me, my partner and another couple.
Our guide, Kuni, was very thoughtful and knowledgeable and it was cheaper than booking a similar trip through the cruise line.
In contrast, the following day, we had a trip booked through the cruise line and there were 26 of us in our group!
Viator are very easy to communicate with. We were kept informed all the way through.
We met at the ferry terminal and were led from there. Our trip included an Our trip included a visit to a pottery and art place where we participated in some art using coloured ash. Our masterpieces were then framed up for us to take home. A very cute memento.
