Sanganeri block printing, known for its vivid colors, was invented in the Jaipur region 500 years ago. Learn this centuries-old technique in the area it originated from—rather than from books or elsewhere—during this small-group class in Jaipur. This hands-on block printing workshop in Jaipur was a wonderful experience. We were warmly welcomed and guided through the traditional process step by step, learning both the technique and the history behind this beautiful craft. The instructors were patient, knowledgeable, and made the experience enjoyable even for beginners. Creating our own pieces by hand and taking them home made it especially meaningful. A truly authentic and memorable cultural experience. highly recommended if you’re visiting Jaipur!

Hey, if you’re visiting India and want a break from all the over-stimulation, this is the place for you. It’s tucked away and shares the space with an actual textile business operation. Nothing pretentious, chill, spacious, and welcoming. We let ourselves up through an old school elevator and was greeted by the owner, Mohit. He gives a quick intro and lets us pick our designs and colors. There are lots of designs to choose from with different levels of difficulty depending on your ambition. We had a lot of fun and it was a much needed cultural experience that involves us creating something instead or just consuming what’s already there. Mohit’s staff are also super helpful. You can tell they love joking around with us and giving us constructive feedback during the processes. No one tries to sell you anything or force you to promote them. I enjoyed picking Mohit’s brain about the dyes, the blocks used, and the technique. In between the dye change, I got to walk around the workshop also to see other types of textile production going on. Overall, you shouldn’t miss this activity!

Alright but to be improved for large groups

Went to Creatis with a group of 19 students aged 15 and three teachers. The fact we were a large group was a bit problematic as we didn't get to choose the colours we wanted. In addition, some of the patterns were way too simple for teens and adults, and not as close to Indian prints as we would have wished for. I recommend the place as the employees were nice and helpful. I hope to complete this workshop again if it can be closer to our expectations.

This was such a fun, memorable experience. In a city where there is a lot to see and consume, we were craving something that was creative, something we could use our hands to do. Mohit, the owner of the space, is wonderful. So are the assistants that stayed with us patiently for an hour after everyone left (because we chose really difficult stencils lol)

A new appreciation of block printing

Doing this class gave me a new appreciation of the skill and labour that goes into the art of block printing. In the 2 hours, I was able to finish my peacock design which was a 4 colour process overlaying each colour. They provide a test piece to practise which is needed in eyeing out where to place each block. Areas to improve was an intro at the start on how Creatis was formed and some interesting info on block printing. Also the colours you select from the swatches are not the colours that are made up, so it’s important that if you’re nor happy with your test piece, you can ask to change it. I really enjoyed the session and highly recommend giving it a go.
