My wife had heard about this and does love donkeys. I like donkeys and other animals as well, but have to state this is a fairly typical Caribbean tourist trap. The two young men who were our tour guides were wonderful and we enjoyed talking with them. But this is a sanctuary with 800 donkeys - which is a lot of donkey poop. It’s hot, dusty, and the smell is intense. The donkeys are cute but be forewarned.

Good afternoon,
Thank you for your review and for sharing your experience, we truly appreciate your feedback.
We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the company of our guides. We want to clarify that the Donkey Sanctuary is one of the stops during the tour and is a separate company that operates independently from us. Therefore, we do not manage or control the conditions there.
Thank you again for your honest feedback, and we hope to welcome you again in the future.

It cancelled. I understand people get sick. I hope they are well. The tour company was upfront about the cancellation. Still haven’t been refunded though.

There were many donkeys which came up to the van. When out of the van we were able to be amount the donkeys, watched as the were fed and generally have a very good experience.

Unfortunately we never connected with the person who was to meet us holding our name on it as we walked straight ahead after the security gate where our ship was docked. We were there 1/2 ahead and stayed 1/2 past the time. These were the directions we had and am sure they asked for the name of our ship when I signed up. Our cell phones did not work once off the ship. We were disappointed and don’t know how to follow up. We took 2 trips through Viator last year and both were excellent.

We are truly sorry to hear that you missed your tour. It sounds like there was a miscommunication, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this caused.
We want to clarify a few things:
Meeting Point: Our meeting point is clearly indicated on your tickets and the PDF map we sent you. We also always request the name of your ship at the time of booking to ensure we have the correct details.
Guide: Your guide and four other participants were waiting for you for 15 minutes at the designated meeting point. Unfortunately, we had to move on to ensure a timely departure for everyone else.
Communication: We want to emphasize that there is free internet available at the cruise port. If you have been unable to contact us, we encourage you to reach out to the information booth at the meeting point. They are there to assist tourists who are having trouble connecting with tour operators.
We are committed to providing excellent tours and strive for smooth operations. We are taking your feedback seriously to review our communication process and ensure clarity for future guests.
We are sorry you missed out on the tour. We hope you'll consider joining us again in the future.

Frustrating and abusive situation.
Guide did not call or show up.
The Sanctuary refused our tickets and we had to by them again. We were told that they never accept guided tours or tickets purchased elsewhere.
Entrance fee is 9$ per person. Viator charged 89$ per person. When issue was brought up to customer service, a refund was refused. No verbatim of my chat conversation was provided. I feel we were the product of an elaborated scam between Viator and Shenekah Tours.
Response from Host, Nov 2024
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I apologize for the frustration you experienced, and I would like to clarify a few points regarding your situation.
1. Communication Issues: We have no record of prior communication between you and us, nor does Viator show any records of correspondence related to your booking.
2. Refund Process: I mentioned that I would gladly refund your money once you provided proof of your communication regarding your pickup location. Unfortunately, you were not at the location stated in your booking, which complicated the matter.
3. Guided Tour Information: Please note that this is a guided tour, not an entry ticket. The details regarding the exclusion of the entrance fee are clearly outlined in your booking confirmation.
4. Entrance Fee: The entrance fee is indeed $9 per person, which is separate from the tour cost. We do not have control over ticket policies at the Sanctuary.
I understand this has been a frustrating experience for you, and I regret that it did not meet your expectations. If you have further documentation or details, please send them my way, and I will do my best to assist you.
Thank you for your understanding.

What a fun tour. Our guide Resine was the best. The sanctuary was great and Resine was full of Bonaire knowledge. It’s great to see these amazing animals so well cared for. We would highly recommend this tour and guide. Bring lots of carrots, the donkeys will love you for it.
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Thank you for choosing us and for sharing your kind words. We are so pleased to hear that Resine made your tour memorable and that you enjoyed your time at the sanctuary. Our priority is quality, not quantity, and it is wonderful to know you appreciated the care of the animals and the experience overall. We look forward to welcoming you again on the island.

The Donkey Sanctuary is such a great place. Glad there are good people to volunteer there and help these animals.
Recina Kowid was a great guide and very knowledgeable. She even helped us set-up an island tour with another house with just one phone call. Highly recommended.
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Thank you for choosing our tour and for your kind feedback. We’re happy to hear that the Donkey Sanctuary left a positive impression and that you enjoyed seeing the care given to the animals. Recina’s knowledge and willingness to go the extra mile to help organize your island tour made your experience even better. Providing quality experiences is our priority, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Bonaire soon.

Learning the history of donkeys on Bonaire. I enjoyed the newborns and the donkey who kept pace with our van (I learned later he was hoping for food).
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Hi Joanne,
Thank you for your message. We are sorry to hear you found this activity too expensive.
Nonetheless, we do hope you enjoyed your tour of the Donkey Sanctuary.

We loved this tour! Our guide was patient and soft-spoken. The donkeys! Such gentle animals that for centuries were exploited and abused.
Then they were abandoned. This sanctuary was a wonderful thing to see. We took cut apples with us and the donkeys came right to us to take them. We keep talking about this tour; it was such a highlight for us.
Response from Host, Jan 2024

Donkeys were AWES9ME!!! Guide was patient, but new to the area so this was his first time to the sanctuary. I loved every second of the tour. Donkeys were friendly, gentle, cuddly, and looking for treats. Gift shop was well stocked. If you love donkeys, this is the tour for you!
Response from Host, Dec 2023

Hope to see you next time on our beautiful island.
Richard_M, May 2023
While the tour was far shorter than advertised, we enjoyed the donkey sanctuary. The new-born donkeys were one of the highlights of the trip.
Response from Host, May 2023
Hi Richard,
Thank you for your message. I am glad you enjoyed your tour. The new-born donkeys are really a sight to see!
The time advertised for your tour includes the trip to and from the sanctuary, and any possible delays if the donkeys in the sanctuary block the roads as the often do. When the trip goes smooth and without delays, the extra time can be spent in the care meadow where you can pet and cuddle the donkeys, as well as visit the flamingo and turtle enclosure in the meadow.
Hope to see you next time on our beautiful island!

Response from Host, Oct 2025
