We had a wonderful day exploring the temples of Ayutthaya with our great guide, AJ! He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and made the history and culture come alive. Despite the torrential rain at times, the timing somehow always seemed to work out perfectly for us! A fascinating and memorable experience. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Highly recommend AJ!
🇹🇭 AYUTTHAYA DAY TOUR FROM BANGKOK — TEMPLES, HISTORY & THAI CULTURE
After visiting Thailand multiple times over the years, there are still plenty of places and pieces of Thai history I haven’t experienced. This time, we decided to take a full-day tour from Bangkok to the ancient city of Ayutthaya.
Our day started with pickup at our hotel and transportation to the tour meeting point near Chatuchak in Bangkok. From there, we joined a group of about 30 people on a bus with our driver and English-speaking Thai guide, AJ.
🚌 OFF TO AYUTTHAYA
The drive took about 90 minutes, with one stop along the way for drinks and a toilet break.
Our itinerary included four major historical sites:
🏯 Wat Mahathat
🏯 Wat Phra Sri Sanphet
🏯 Wat Chaiwatthanaram
🛕 Wat Lokayasutharam — Temple of the Reclining Buddha
FIRST STOP — WAT MAHATHAT
Wat Mahathat is one of the oldest and most historically significant temples in Ayutthaya and once housed sacred Buddha relics.
This is also where you'll find one of the most famous images associated with Ayutthaya — the Buddha head surrounded by the roots of a Bodhi tree.
It’s something I had seen many times in photographs, so seeing it in person was definitely one of the highlights of the day.
SECOND STOP — WAT PHRA SRI SANPHET
Wat Phra Sri Sanphet was part of the royal palace complex and was used by Thai royalty for important ceremonies and rituals.
It is considered one of the most important temples in the old capital and gives you a much better understanding of just how important Ayutthaya once was.
THIRD STOP — WAT CHAIWATTHANARAM
This was another impressive complex.
The architecture shows influences associated with Khmer design, and walking around the grounds gives you a good idea of the scale and grandeur of Ayutthaya hundreds of years ago.
🍜 LUNCH BREAK
Lunch was included at a tour restaurant and consisted of a buffet of Thai dishes.
Simple, not spicy, and nothing particularly memorable, but there was enough variety to satisfy everyone. It did the job.
FINAL STOP — WAT LOKAYASUTHARAM
Our last temple visit was Wat Lokayasutharam, famous for its enormous reclining Buddha.
The giant Buddha image is one of the few major structures remaining at the site and makes for an impressive final stop before heading back to Bangkok.
🚌 Afterward, we made the approximately 90-minute drive back and were dropped off at the MBK shopping complex.
⭐ OUR GUIDE AJ
AJ did an excellent job throughout the day.
He made a real effort to explain Thailand's history, including how the country's centers of power and capitals changed over the centuries before modern-day Bangkok became the capital.
At every stop, he explained the history and significance of what we were seeing. There weren't many questions from the group because, quite frankly, AJ had already covered most of them!
MY CONCLUSION
Even after visiting Thailand multiple times, this tour filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge about Ayutthaya.
Seeing these ruins in person helped me better understand the wars that devastated the old capital and the damage and looting that occurred at many of these sites over the centuries.
You see row after row of Buddha statues that have lost their heads, ruined temples, and remnants of what was once one of the great cities of Southeast Asia.

For an entire day out, I thought the price was reasonable.
Would I call Ayutthaya an absolute must-do on your first trip to Bangkok? Probably not.
I'd put it more in the "nice to do" category, especially if you're interested in history, temples, architecture, or Thai culture.
And having a knowledgeable guide like AJ makes a big difference. Instead of simply walking around looking at ancient ruins, you actually learn the stories behind what you're seeing.
Another piece of Thailand's history checked off my list. 🇹🇭

This was a great excursion. The guide Jokey was very knowledgeable and friendly. He was very detailed and explained each step of the day. Bring an umbrella and/or a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

This is an informative and enjoyable tour. What a unique experience, being able to view antiquities in the comfort of a well- organised and knowledgeable host and her team. My only suggestion would be to do a little research prior to the trip: what to bring, wear, how far the pick up place is from your accommodation. I was staying quite a distance from the pick- up point; however the entire team ensured I was looked after. I appreciated their kindness.

I booked the early pick up (6.30am) and we were finished by 2.30pm. The temple visits are the right amount of time so you can see the sites without staying too long in the heat. Lunch was delicious 😋. William was a good tour guide who shared a variety of information about the sites and about the wider history of Thailand. A great trip. Would recommend.
It was excellent. My guide was William, he gave excellent commentary and our driver was Mackie, he kept the bus cold and water ready!
Don’t miss this if you’re in Bangkok.
Make sure you have a hat, fan and covered up. It’s hot and not a lot of shade.
Each site also has cold drinks there and of course souvenirs.
Lunch is great, hold off buying souvenirs because the lunch spot have excellent ones and they are cheap!!
Sam was very friendly, informative, and even organised a medical check for one of the group who tripped. This didn’t delay the group, as a team member took her to a private doctor for a check up, covered by insurance that comes included in the price, who knew : )
The buffet lunch was really good, especially the red curry.
AJ was knowledgeable and kind. Food was good and made it customised for vegan passengers and was accomodating quickly. Enjoyed a perfect day.

The tour visits 4 separate sights. The bus is kept at a comfortable temperature, the food was good, and the guide gave a lot of history about the temples. Our guide, Super Boye was excellent!

A really thorough walk through some of the historic site at Ayutthaya. Our guide, Boy, was excellent, imparting so much information that my brain was full by the end. Great lunch, and excellently run day - highly recommend.

This was a great tour. But what made it even better was Sam and the driver Kai. Sam was extremely informative and through in his explanation of the history of each site we visited. He offered insight, explanations and the background of each historical location. His love for his country shined thru. Definitely ask for him on your tour and definitely take this tour. Jokey and the driver were incredibly organised, striking a great balance between guided tour segments and free time. The lunch food was nice though a bit cold.

morning have hoel pick up after we go to the old capital city. go to Wat Chaiwatthanaram, nice area. afer go the big buddha statue. after buffet lunch. after longer trip to Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Mahathat. honestly we not see to much things here becouse last year earthquake destroy many parts. buddha hed in tree is interesting.

Great historical oratory by "Boy" along with lot of details about each stop. Lunch was good (vegetarian on request), the restaurant where we stopped for lunch had excellent facilities as well as super clean water.

Great tour of the historic temples of Ayutthaya, nice lunch included. Quite a long day with the comfortable coach ride from Bangkok but worth the effort
Our guide, Karl, was really knowledgeable and helpful. He answered all our questions and told great stories. It was a really hot day, but they gave us plenty of cold water.
