this was a fabulous experience, we learnt so much about sumo wrestling. Machiko put so much effort into explaining everything about the rituals and history of sumo, it was fascinating. I had never been to anything like it. We had great seats too. The meal afterwards was very traditional and delicious just a short walk away from the stadium.

  • Most travelers can participate
  • Chanko nabe, also known as “sumo stew”, is a Japanese stew (hot pot) that contains chicken stock as the soup base with various vegetables. Chanko originated from the Ryokoku area and sumo wrestlers are known to eat a lot of it because a large amount of chanko can be cooked at once and many people can eat at the same time, perfect for sumo wrestlers who are hungry from training.
  • If dinner option is selected at checkout, the chanko hot pot dinner without drinks will be the default meal (please let us know if you would prefer vegetarian, or if you have any other special dietary requirements on the “Special Requirements” field at checkout. Please note that traditional chanko nabe broth is typically made with pork or chicken, but the restaurant may substitute the broth for those who prefer vegetarian option. Please understand that once we have accepted your dinner request, changes cannot be made one week before the tour date.
  • There is no age requirement. Children must be accompanied by adult (18 or older). Adult pricing applies to all guests of any age, except infants and toddlers between age 1 and 3, which are free of charge, as long as they do not occupy a seat (infants must sit on parents’ laps).
  • Before the tour, please notify us if you or someone in your group will be in a wheelchair. Please note that there is a wheelchair storage area on the first floor of the stadium; however, your seats will be on the second floor. Guests must be able to climb up the stairs on their own (or with the help from a family member) as staff from Ryogoku Kokugikan will not be able to assist guests.
  • No outside food or drinks are allowed in the arena, but food is available for purchase from vendors within the arena.
  • For Standard Tour (Join-in group option), the seats will be on the second floor B chair seats (from rows 7 to 11) or C chair seats. The tour will have a maximum of 20 people sitting in the same location with the English-speaking tour guide.
  • The Grand Sumo Tournaments in Japan are held on fixed dates throughout the year. For 2026, the schedule is as follows:
  • Tokyo Tournament 2026: Jan 11 - Jan 25 | May 10 – May 24 | Sep 13 – Sep 27
  • Osaka Tournament 2026: March 8 – March 22
  • Nagoya Tournament 2026: July 12 – July 26
  • Fukuoka Tournament 2026: Nov 8 – Nov 22
  • Please note that there may be a wait prior to seating, as we must wait for all sumo matches to end before entering. There may also be congestion at the Sumo Museum, in which the tour guide may ask guests to visit on their own since it would be difficult to walk around with a large group in a congested area.
  • When do the sumo tournaments take place in Japan? The official basho (tournaments) take place six times a year at various locations with each tournament lasting 15 days (start date and end date both land on Sundays). The exact dates vary, but takes place on the same months each year: January Tournament (Tokyo), March Tournament (Osaka), May Tournament (Tokyo), July Tournament (Nagoya), September Tournament (Tokyo), and November Tournament (Fukuoka).
  • How far in advance should I book? Preparing an event requires some time, especially if reservations for restaurants or other venues are required. We recommend making a reservation as early as possible. Ideally, it should be 3 months before your travel date, or 1 month before the travel date at the very least. We may not be able to arrange your event in time so your booking request may be cancelled and you will receive a full refund.
  • Please also note that group tickets are released by the Sumo Association about 4 – 7 weeks before the tour date; if we are unable to obtain the tickets, we will notify guests within 4 weeks before the tour and will offer an alternative tour date or full refund.
  • Using audio headsets, you’ll clearly be able to hear the expert guide explain the history and culture of sumo wrestling, as well as learn about some of the most famous sumo wrestlers throughout history and today in Japan. Enjoy the intense matches with explanations from your expert guide and cheer on your favorite sumo wrestlers along with dedicated local fans.
  • The meeting point will be included in the tour details sent to your email at least one week before the tour date.
  • Japan Awaits is a licensed tour operator in Japan, with hundreds of registered and vetted tour guides nationwide. We offer tours in any location in Japan and manage all details, including transportation and tickets. Visit Japan Awaits to learn more about our tours or inquire about a custom experience today.
  • For Sumo Stable experience (during off-season of Sumo Tournament): Join the Sumo Stable Morning Practice Tour (during off-season of Sumo Tournament) at a sumo stable near Warabi Station (30 min. from Tokyo), in a join-in group (8 - 16 people). Watch sumo wrestlers train at an authentic stable while an expert guide shares insights via audio headsets and enjoy the chanko lunch after the session. Location is at the Sumo Stable near Warabi Station (30 min from Tokyo Station) from 8 AM - 12:00 PM. Please note that with this option, you will only visit a sumo training stable (with guide and headset) but you will not have a seat ticket for a sumo tournament, because this date is off-season and no tournaments are taking place on this date.

Highly recommended

Ben_R, May 2026
It was a great time and I would recommend it to anyone visiting that wants to experience the culture. The tour guide was very good at his job and gave little fun facts about each individual wrestler which I found very interesting

Grand Sumo - grand fun!

Catherine_G, May 2026
We had a great time at Ryogoku Kokugikan Grand Sumo Natsu Basho Day 12 with Koji-san and the group! The information that Koji-san provided was very helpful, and we had really good seats.

Great Sumo Experience!

Seth_W, May 2026
A fantastic day of Sumo with excellent guidance and commentary by our host Izumi. I especially appreciated the detailed spreadsheet of all the days matches with the wrestlers standing and history. I highly recommend this trip to any one new to sumo or familiar with it. Seats were great and seeing the second to last day was a treat.

Super cool! The energy...

Frank_B, May 2026
An enjoyable experience, I would definitely recommend, especially if you have never been to a Sumo match. Our guide Duke to the time to take us to a small museum before the match and gave us a play by play during the match

Awesome Day in Tokyo!

Sumo Tournament - great experience

Very well organised and a good group size. Hiro our guide was very knowledgeable and has a passion for Sumo, which added to the experience. Definitely worth the cost. Highly recommend.

Best decision ever!

Miki_K, May 2026
Getting tickets for the Sumo Grand Tounament is harder than getting Taylor Swift tickets so we took a gamble to get in as part of a tour and were we surprised! We got a full tour of the sumo stadium, a running commentary on every aspect of sumo by Rieko our guide, we learnt so much about the sport, each sumo wrestler's background and their strengths etc. It was mind blowing experience! Way better than going by ourselves! The tournament was awesome! Highly recommend. You get great seats, great commentary, and overall mind blowing experience!

Authentic experience

Olivia_I, May 2026
Insights into the sumo top division, overview of the tournament hall and the details of what are involved in a sumo match, a gentle and informative Japanes senior as our guide.

Absolutely fantastic experience

Dina_S, May 2026
It was an awesome experience — very well organized. They always kept us informed about where and when to meet. I especially want to thank Yummy, our tour guide, who was absolutely fantastic! I didn’t know anything about sumo, and Yummy explained everything to us in great detail. She was the best tour guide I have ever had! She provided us with headphones and kept explaining throughout the entire event, so even when you were away from your seat, you could still stay fully informed. The dinner venue after the event was absolutely delicious and felt so authentic. I loved it and would definitely recommend this experience! Well worth every single penny!

A must do experience to understand Japan!

Andreas_M, May 2026
The tour guide, Ms. Machiko Machida was absolutely amazing! She helped guid the large tour group exceptionally. She answered all of our questions, was extremely knowledgeable, polite and made sure everyone was together. She explained the Sumo Tournament, the rules and the history, plus the importance of the Sumo culture of Japan. Highly recommended! The Sumo Tournament experience was amazing, the history, the culture and especially the tradition showcases one of the reasons my wife and I decided to travel to Japan. This is a MUST in order to really understand Japan as a whole and for everyone to experience. Great for families, groups and solo travelers. Everyone felt safe and was treated with respect.

Enjoyed Sumo tournament!

Annette_J, May 2026
This was a very unique experience to be able to attend the Sumo tournament. Machiko was very knowledgeable and explained many traditions and answered all our questions! She also provided some history of Japan!

A Genuine Sports Spectacle

Matt_B, May 2026
We had Miko as our tour guide for this experience, and she was absolutely amazing. She walked around the arena and gave us a detailed history of sumo from its founding over one thousand years ago to the current wrestlers that hold the title of Yokozuna. She also provided detailed commentary during the matches so that we understood the background of the fighters and their head to head records. Miko is not just a tour guide, she is a genuine fan and it showed through her deep knowledge. This experience was the best thing we did in Tokyo, and I can't wait to come back and do it again.

Great first time experience!

Abel_A, May 2026
I highly recommend. It was our first experience and deep dive into sumo. Its a lovely historical tour of the arena and sumo. You learn quite a bit about the origins of sumo. Then you have the main event the sumo tournament itself. It was captivating and riveting, and you really gain an appreciation for the sport. Our guide Mikayo was great, you can tell she was a genuine sumo fan and she made sure we knew what was happening at all times through our recievers. Great commentary! She actually made the day and would always want to do this tour with her! Lastly to top it off, dinner was great, I had a sumo wrestlers diet!

It’s a good tour but it’s overpriced.

Jade_L, Mar 2026
It’s a okay tour but essentially you’re just paying for the sumo ticket and a translator. The price of a regular sumo tickets is way cheaper than the cost of the tour. If you can’t get tickets direct from the tournament the this would be the next best option if you love sumo and willing to pay this price.

Worth it!

Ruben_V, Mar 2026
Shuji made us feel more than welcome coming to the arena and in the dinner. He was very informative and made sure that we knew the lore behind the wrestlers and the importance of their matches that day.

Sumo Afternoon

Terren_S, Feb 2026
Our sumo tournament experience with Junko was fantastic!. She was delightful and incredibly knowledgeable, not just about sumo culture and traditions, but about many of the wrestlers themselves. Clearly a devoted sumo fan, she explained the rituals and techniques behind what we were watching, which made the entire experience so much richer. The hot pot dinner afterwards was the perfect way to end the day. Highly recommend Junko for anyone wanting an authentic and informative sumo experience!

10/10 Sumo Experience with a Knowledgeable Local Expert!

Sandy_M, Feb 2026
My husband and I tried to buy tickets for the final day of the Grand Sumo Tournament on our own, but they sold out within minutes. We ended up booking this experience for January 2026 with Japan Awaits, and we’re so glad we did. Maya was our local guide, and she was fantastic. We met just before 2:00 pm and were able to watch all of the bouts in the top division, plus most of the division before it. Maya is clearly a knowledgeable sumo fan, and she brought helpful materials that made it easy to understand the rules, the rituals, and the wrestlers we were watching. Our seats were in one of the upper levels, but the view was still incredible. There were about 12 total people in our group. A highlight was the earpiece audio, which allowed Maya to explain what was happening in real time, making the tournament much more meaningful for us as native English speakers. She also seamlessly spoke Japanese and English, and even chatted in Spanish with another couple in our group. Her knowledge of sumo culture and history, and her willingness to answer questions throughout, really enriched the experience. After the tournament, we enjoyed a traditional chanko-nabe dinner with other guests, where Maya shared more context about sumo and Japan. I would absolutely book another tour with her, and I highly recommend this experience for anyone interested in attending a traditional sumo tournament.

Excellent experience

James_C, Jan 2026
Very fun experience. All the logistics worked out great, we rcvd an email with the meeting point info, met the guide there. He then gave us a short tour of the arena, and described all the action when we got to our seats to see the event.

Recommended!

Simon_B, Jan 2026
Great! Very helpful and friendly staff, highly recommend for getting tickets as well, since you most likely won’t be able to buy it yourself as a tourist, because it sold out within 5 minutes on the official sumo website.

Great Sumo tour with Miyko

Anastasia_F, Jan 2026
Miyko was a great Sumo guide - she shared so much history and explained the key techniques so as none of our family knew much about the sport it made it more fun.

Amazing experience

Elizabeth_R, Jan 2026
This was so much fun and so informative. One of the best experiences I've had. I am so glad I did it. The tour guide was fantastic and so knowledgeable. The food was delicious!

Hiro is our hero

Yael_S, Jan 2026
"To be honest, the moment I finished making that non-refundable booking, I thought to myself: 'What a mistake, and at such a price!' What do I even know about sumo? And to waste a whole day on this during such a short trip to Tokyo... but oh, how wrong I was. It was wonderful! Everything was perfect, from the precise directions on how to get there to the sumo meal at the restaurant afterwards. But the highlight was definitely the half-day spent with our guide, Hiro, watching the tournament. Who would have believed it could be so interesting and moving? Hiro’s guidance played a central role—he provided deep insights directly into my ear throughout the matches, covering everything from history to rituals. The fascinating information about each competitor, along with eye-opening charts about the bouts, was incredible. This is no surprise, of course, when you have a guide who is so passionate about the field and clearly finds joy in sharing it with others. It really made me want to keep following the rest of the tournament. It was a truly Japanese experience that, while not cheap, was absolutely worth the investment.

Unmissable experience with expert tour guide

Anthony_P, Jan 2026
Amazing experience. I think tickets are pretty difficult to get on your own because they sell out so fast, it’s more convenient to use an agent. Easy to our tour operator, entrance to the event was quick and easy, our guide Junka who is a huge sumo fan, explained everything that was going on to us over an earpiece. The event itself is unmissable; the sumo tournament was absolutely amazing. We got the seats on the upper level (they are more western style stadium seats); the ones on the lower level are a little cramped because you would be sitting on the floor on a pad in a small square area that holds 4 people per square. The view from up top is better anyway and there really isn’t a bad seat in the house. 10/10 experience, look forward to doing it again one day.

Grand Sumo tournament

Karen_P, Jan 2026
It was a great experience all round- good seats, interesting commentary, smooth organisation & a cultural experience at the Grand Sumo Tournament

Grand Sumo!

David_M, Jan 2026
Great option for experiencing a sumo tournament- knowledgeable and friendly guide, tickets for tournaments otherwise very difficult to get for foreigners. We had a great time. You get to see all of the top division bouts (Makuuchi) and about half of the second division bouts (Juryo).
