If you want to experience Cretan life, then this is the tour for you

If you want to see a little bit of the real Crete (IMHO), this is the tour for you. Valsilis was our guide for the day, whose family still live in the region. We learned about the olive trees, different types of olives, how edible olives are prepared and olive oil is made. We then got chance to try the different types and flavours of the oils, and the opportunity to purchase the ones you liked. We then called at Vasilis’s cousin Nikos at his sheep farm to learn about cheese production. It was literally hands on, as you got the chance to milk a ewe, and witness cheese being made from the milk. Again, you had the opportunity to try the different cheeses and purchase them. The final stop was at the family home of Vasilis, where he grows olives, vines and keeps bees. There you continue with your culinary experience, by trying a variety of wines and honey produced by Vasilis. You start with the wine tasting, then have the opportunity to get hands on with the bees. You are provided with all the necessary protective clothing. If you prefer to sit out the bee hive experience, then that is not an issue. If you are lucky, you mat even get chance to meet and chat to Vasilis’s mum. The tour concludes with a lunch comprising of food made from all the locally grown produce. Vegetarian’s are catered for (just let them know when you book). The tour is limited to 8 people max which makes it a very personal experience. As the tour takes you into the mountains, the road can be quite twisty at times, but Vasilis is an experienced and careful driver. However, if you get travel sick, it may be worth you taking a travel sickness pill. There is room in the mini bus for bags if you need to take one with you, which you can leave in the vehicle when you are involved in the activities. Vasilis was punctual, enthusiastic, fluent in both Greek and English (and possible other languages),and very knowledgeable about all things Cretan. It was a great experience, and one that we will never forget.

Best Meal in Crete

Had so much fun with friends! I thought the wine was going to be the star of the show, but the food was absolutely amazing. In addition to the Cretan salad, we had dolmas, bread with cheese with the honey from on site, and pork. Definitely no shortage of food and the best meal I had in Crete. Highly recommend donating to the bees and bringing home the heather and cardamom honey and thyme honey. Wish I got more while I was there.

Our favorite excursion on our 13 day trip!! Vasili picked us up on time right where he said he would. We learned so much about the area, the people of Crete, the growth and processing of olives, the process of bee keeping, how to discover the right language to use to order the wine you like...and then there was the lovely meal we helped to make in the middle of the vineyard! Amazing day...amazing excursion. Shout out to Anna Maria who quickly answered my texts to help the day go smoothly! Thanks Vasili for giving us a day we will never forget! HIghly recommend this tour!!

This is one experience you’re not going to want to miss! If you want to see and learn about local farming practices, you’ll get a firsthand experience. Our host was more than gracious, showing us his second generation family farm where the vines grow. We also had a first hand bee encounter and a fantastic home cooked lunch amongst the vineyard. It was by far our most favorite day on the island. You won’t be disappointed!
