Excellent Tour of San Marco
Caterina took us on a journey back in time to the 1400s when the Medici established the area. She guided us through the corridors containing the cells of the monks who lived there and where Fra Angelico lived and painted frescoes that adorned each cell. You could almost feel each monk’s contemplation and meditation. Then, through Caterina’s dialogue you could also feel the intensity of another friar who lived there: Giralamo Savonarola; and the bonfire of the vanities. The last corridor / cell contained the quiet refuge of Cosimo I de Medici. If you visit San Marco, take this tour; don’t go alone.

Our guide, Katherine, was very knowledgeable and really made the works of Fra Angelico come alive for us.

A great tour!
My mom and I had a fantastic tour of the monastery with a guide who was incredibly knowledgeable about all of the art. She showed us so much, and we were able to walk around independently at the end. We definitely recommend this tour. We’re also glad that we did the morning option—it wasn’t super busy with school groups yet so we really got to see everything up close.
