What are people saying about Samaria Gorge

Long Ass Day, be prepared!
Second time doing the gorge, forgot what a long day it was. The first stretch is the hardest as all down hill and quite slippery. Great challenge, very hot and exhausting. Once you leave the gorge it’s a long walk to the meeting point. Then there’s a long ferry trip and then back to resort. Long long day. Very rewarding once completed.

Samaria
A long downhill walk with fantastic views. We didn’t see any of the krikri goats. A fantastic swim at the end. Bring good shoes.

Hard and worth it
It was a long and demanding day but worth it if you’re able to trek 9 miles at various altitudes and terrains. Diving into the Mediterranean Sea after a 6 hour hike was remarkable. You really get to see a lot of Crete on this trip.

A great experience
A great day! Amazing views, demanding in the hot weather but a very enjoyable trip, the sore legs for days after were worth it!

Chania
People exploring the Samaria Gorge on a sunny day.
  • Take sturdy footwear, a sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a full water bottle, and food to complete the 4- to 6-hour hike safely.

  • Stick to the trail! If the going gets too tough, there are park wardens on donkeys to rescue you.

  • Overnight camping is not permitted in the gorge; this is a day hike only.

  • Some walking tours from Chania do not include Samaria Gorge tickets—expect to pay the national park entrance fee upon arrival.

  • Because of the rough terrain and length, this hike is not recommended for young kids or those who are not in good physical condition.
