Highlight of our trip!! Bus drive to the start was super easy and we had a beautiful sunrise. The hike was challenging, as expected, but totally manageable. Take your time and enjoy the views. Absolutely recommend!

Amazing trip, highly recommend to anyone interested in hiking the Samaria Gorge! The views were fantastic and you get to hike the trail on your own pace. After all the hiking you get to relax on the beach and eat at the local restaurants. Our guide Nikos was great and very helpful too.

Our guide was Nikos and he made this a very seamless experience. Started off with a shuttle to the top, stopped at a nice cafe/tavern, and hiked for about 10-11miles before reaching the beach. We took our time and had plenty of time to relax and have fun by the beach. Would recommend wearing at least a thick sole shoe as it is really rocky and unstable grounds.

Epic Hiking in Crete
This hike was epic. My 2 friends and I did it in about 4 hours, which was considered fast. It's not technically difficult but after 4 hours, we were ready to hangout on the beach, which is where this day ends. The views were fantastic, and we had about 3 hours to hangout at the beach after hiking. Highly recommend.

Great tour and excellent guide
An extraordinary trip in the gorge of Samaria. One of the best experiences you can have in Crete. Excellent guide (Nikos) very knowledgeable reassuring and funny. The trek is hard but rewarding and anybody in reasonable physical shape can do it. Highly recommended!

Great to excursion!
Our guide was fantastic, she gave clear instructions and was very detailed in what to expect during the hike. The hike was long and very tiring but there were aropa along the way to cool down and being able to take a dip in the libyian sea was so rewarding afterward!

Samaria
A long downhill walk with fantastic views. We didn’t see any of the krikri goats. A fantastic swim at the end. Bring good shoes.

Beautiful hike
A beautiful experience, the views are incredible. All downhill but a little challenging due to the fact that you are hiking on rocks. Would absolutely recommend it.

This tour was executed...
This tour was executed exactly as advertised. Nikos and his team were on time, friendly, helpful, and full of useful information. The level of communication pre-tour was excellent. The hike is stunning, even if you’re accustomed to beautiful mountain hikes in your home country. As all the reviews say, the hike is an 8-mile descent with another 2-mile flat paved walk to the beach. The trail is very well maintained with several water refills. You don’t get winded or dehydrate like you do hiking at altitude, but it is hard on your knees and calves. Plan on a full day of recovery (relaxing on a beach). After the hike you can swim and grab a bite at one of several restaurants in Agia Roumeli. Then catch a ferry (5:30 p.m. to Sfakion if that’s where you’re getting picked up) and then it’s a healthy drive back to Chania. It’s a long day but well worth it. You have to buy your entrance ticket to the national park and your ferry ticket ahead of time and separately. Keep track of your national park ticket because they check it at the end of the trail (you show your e-ticket and get a small printed one at the trailhead, which you have to present at the end). Samaria Gorge is a unique place. Glad I didn’t miss it.

Crete Excursion
A great day and shore excursion in Crete and on the Akrotiri peninsula where we enjoyed , despite the inclement weather for September, a visit to a castle , Agia Triada monastery , Marathi beach and Chania town . Giorgos our lovely driver drove us expertly , was friendly and courteous , listened to and accommodated successfully our requested alterations to the itinerary, as having done a similar tour previously there were both places we wanted to return to and newly explore . We managed a paddle with a refreshment stop rather than the planned swim at the picturesque Marathi beach then had a delicious leisurely late lunch at a restaurant in Chania town which Giorgos recommended and dropped us off right outside . We finally returned to our ship on time laden with honey and balsamic vinegar from the monastery after a lovely , memorable day . Thanks to Giorgos !

When to visit

Take sturdy footwear, a sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a full water bottle, and food to complete the 4- to 6-hour hike safely.
Stick to the trail! If the going gets too tough, there are park wardens on donkeys to rescue you.
Overnight camping is not permitted in the gorge; this is a day hike only.
Some walking tours from Chania do not include Samaria Gorge tickets—expect to pay the national park entrance fee upon arrival.
Because of the rough terrain and length, this hike is not recommended for young kids or those who are not in good physical condition.
