Troy, an ancient city in Turkey, is the legendary setting of the Trojan War in Homer’s Iliad. The actual city dates back to 3500 BC and features seven layers of civilizations. Archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann led excavations in the 19th century, destroying many ruins in pursuit of treasures. In 1998, Troy was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
To reach Troy from Istanbul, you can take a bus, car, or join a guided tour that includes transportation. The journey by road is approximately 5–6 hours. Direct buses run from Istanbul’s main bus terminals to Çanakkale several times throughout the day. From the Çanakkale city center, you have to take a taxi or dolmuş (public minibus) to the archaeological site.
The Troy archaeological site is open 8:30am to 7:30pm from April to October and from 8:30am to 5:30pm from November to March. If you visit during the spring or autumn, try to time your visit with sunset when the colorful sky illuminates the ruins.
The Troy archaeological complex offers a chance to explore 4,000 years of history, including the citadel’s defensive walls, visible layers of the city’s nine rebuildings, and bastions.
