1 Day in Victoria for First Timers

Curated by Kate Lowetha writer with many visits to Victoria under her belt.

My first visit to Victoria, British Columbia, could barely be counted as a visit. I stopped here for a few hours at the end of an Alaska cruise and spent the time walking through Old Town and Victoria Chinatown. This charming city instantly made me want to return, which I happily did many times since.

When you have one day in Victoria, you'll need to prioritize your activities, whether that's a visit to Butchart Gardens to see the flowers in bloom, or a whale-watching tour on the Salish Sea. I recommend you spend some time taking in all the Victorian architecture throughout town, and then walking along the harbor to breathe in the sea air.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a whale-watching tour.

Victoria has a temperate climate with mild summers and winter temps above freezing.

Afternoon

When you’re ready for lunch, Fisherman's Wharf is a prime spot to enjoy fresh-caught seafood. Or, head into Old Town where you'll find brewpubs and other sit-down restaurants. A food tour will give you a taste of many different cuisines, with a stop in Chinatown for spring rolls and other favorites. Be sure to check out Fan Tan Alley, the narrowest commercial street in North America, while you're there.

Night

If you haven't had a chance to head out on the water during your Victoria visit, sunset is an excellent time. You'll find sunset cruises and evening kayak tours leaving from the Inner Harbor, or you can try your luck at spotting migrating humpbacks on a whale-watching tour. If you don't have time for a sail, the Dallas Road Waterfront Trail is a lovely spot for a sunset stroll with water views. It's the perfect way to end your visit to this port city.
