Itineraries for Your Trip to Sydney
2 Days in Sydney for First Timers
I’ve had many “first times” in Sydney, as I’ve visited countless times but often with long gaps between. My true first time was as a child, when my family ticked off many family-friendly attractions. Later, as a student in nearby Canberra, I often went up to Sydney to enjoy the beaches—especially Manly and the Northern Beaches—as well as the nightlife the nation’s capital lacks. Now, I pass through Sydney every year or so with my own daughter, introducing her to its big-city appeal.
No matter how many times I visit, I’m always impressed by Sydney’s must-see attractions—the Opera House and Darling Harbour among them—plus new-to-me spots. Here’s how to enjoy two days in Sydney, arguably Australia’s most beautiful city.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a walk from Circular Quay to the Sydney Opera House, for views of Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Sydney swelters in summer, so don’t stray far from a beach—or visit at other times of year for a more pleasant experience.
Start your day with a stroll through The Rocks, Sydney’s oldest European district, and all the way around to the Sydney Opera House on the other side of Circular Quay. Some of Sydney’s most famous views are found here. Indigenous-led walking tours or behind-the-scenes tours of the Opera House are good ways to learn more.
This afternoon, focus on one of Sydney’s top museums, art galleries, or other cultural institutions. If you’re traveling with kids, you might like to visit the Taronga Zoo, where you can see both Australian and exotic animals. Alternatively, some top attractions in the city include the Australian Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Hyde Park Barracks Museum, and the Australian National Maritime Museum. Hours of fun, whatever the weather.
End your stay in Sydney in style on a sunset dinner cruise. Even if you’ve been on the water during the day, the views are different at night, so there’s always more to experience. Plus, you don’t have to worry about dinner reservations on land when you’re treated to first-class food on board. Listen to live music as you dine and raise a toast to two days in Sydney.
Sydney has a good public transportation network but sometimes it’s just easier to take a vehicle designed especially for tourists, such as a hop-on hop-off bus tour. This morning, visit some of Sydney’s spread-out attractions from a convenient bus, such as Bondi Beach, the Royal Botanic Garden, and Hyde Park. Get off wherever you like to explore further, or sit back and enjoy the views and commentary while doing a circuit.
