3 Days in Stockholm for First Timers

Curated by Claire Bullenwho regularly returns to Stockholm to see friends and explore the city.

You could spend years getting to know Stockholm. The largest and most dynamic city in Scandinavia, Sweden’s capital is fit to bursting with palaces, churches, museums, and other postcard-worthy historical landmarks.

But it’s not just the city’s rich heritage and wealth of character that keep me coming back for more. Stockholm is anything but stuck in the past, and its boundary-pushing dining scene, reputation as a design capital, and beautiful island scenery draw me (and so many other visitors) back again and again. Whether you’re stopping by for the first or 10th time, here’s how to experience the city’s best with three days in Stockholm.

If you only have time for one thing, make it Vasa Museum for its well-preserved 17th-century warship.

Stockholm enjoys midnight sun in the summer, but much of the rest of the year can be nippy—warm layers are advised.

Day 1

Stockholm is a wonderfully pedestrian-friendly city, and there’s no better way to get an introduction to its historical highlights—and soak up its maritime feel—than by exploring on foot. On a morning walking tour, get to know the storied Gamla Stan Old Town, spot highlights like the Riddarholm Church and Nobel Prize Museum, and receive a crash course in Swedish history.

Speaking of Swedish history—one of the city’s most resolutely popular landmarks is the Vasa Museum. After stopping for a fika (coffee and snack break), spend a few hours exploring its collection, including its starring attraction: a perfectly preserved 17th-century warship.

Day 2

Stockholm is scattered across 14 islands, and it stands as the gateway to the Stockholm Archipelago, which comprises tens of thousands more. In other words, an island-hopping trip is a must—and a cruise through the archipelago is an ideal way to start your second day in town.

If you’ve found that those sea breezes have worked up an appetite, then all the better: With a Neo-Nordic dining scene that draws global acclaim, Stockholm is no culinary slouch. Once you’re back on dry land, set off on a wide-ranging food tour and try staples from seafood to smoked reindeer (sorry, Rudolph).

Day 3

Three days is enough time to plan a small jaunt out of Stockholm—and a Viking-themed excursion is sure to please history buffs of all stripes. Between visiting sights like the Broby Bro runestones and Sweden’s oldest town of Sigtuna, you’ll learn all about Viking folklore.

Once you’re back in town, have grabbed a bite, and watched the sun go down, it’s time for one last Stockholm excursion. On a nighttime walking tour, you won’t just see a new side of the city—you’ll also keep the folklore theme going by immersing yourself in the city’s ghostly tales.
